Lincoln (Pennsylvania) sprints to second straight men's title

Lincoln (Pennsylvania) dominated the three shortest races of the Division III Men's Indoor Track Championships and went on to defend its 1998 title March 12-13 at Ohio Northern.

The Lions, who won the championship for the fourth time in the last five years and the fifth time overall, received a total of 40 points from six different competitors in the 55- and 400-meter dashes and the 55-meter hurdles. Lincoln racked up 60 points to runner-up Wisconsin-Oshkosh's 37.

Alonzo Wiggins and Chris Cobbs claimed first and second places for Lincoln in the 55-meter hurdles. Wiggins sprinted to victory in 7.43 seconds with 1998 winner Cobbs just one-hundredth of a second behind. A Lincoln competitor has won the 55-meter hurdles four straight years.

In the 55-meter dash, Dayne Ross came in second and Roland Whiting fourth to give the Lions 12 more points. Ross' time of 6.23 seconds was one-hundredth of a second behind Cortland State's Stefan Mascoll's meet record. Mascoll broke his own mark of 6.27, set last year.

Steve Mitchell and Robert Woolbright added third- and fourth-place efforts for the Lions in the 400. Rowan's Rich Dixon won the event in a meet-record 47.64 seconds.

Lincoln also received a strong performance from Thomas Thompson, who took second in the triple jump and tied for third in the high jump. Thompson was a key performer in the Lions' 1998 championship after winning the triple jump and contributing second-place leaps in the high and long jumps.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh's second-place performance was sparked by Shannon King, who won the high and triple jumps and soared to second place in the long jump.

Another meet record was set by Mount Union's Shawn Watson when he soared 25 feet, 3 1/4 inches in the long jump. Watson became just the seventh competitor in Division III men's indoor track history to win the same event three times.
