Iowa escapes Gophers to capture fifth straight wrestling title

The streak is now at five for Iowa, which avenged its loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten Conference championship by edging the Golden Gophers in the 69th annual Division I Wrestling Championships March 18-20 at Penn State.

Iowa, which had its 25-year streak of Big Ten titles snapped by Minnesota earlier this month, clinched the national title in the tournament's final bout without having a wrestler on the mat. Cal State Bakersfield heavyweight Stephen Neal enabled Iowa to claim its 19th Division I championship when he repeated as champion with a 3-2 decision over Minnesota's Brock Lesnar. A Lesnar victory would have given the Golden Gophers their first championship.

"This year was sweeter because nobody expected it (the championship)," Iowa head coach Jim Zalesky said. "We wrestled with a lot of emotion and fight."

The Hawkeyes finished with 1001/2 points. Minnesota, which was the runner-up for the second consecutive year, was two points back.

"A couple of our guys didn't wrestle up to their seeds and Iowa's did," Minnesota head coach J Robinson said. "When you train that hard and put that much into it, you have to be disappointed."

Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma State in third with 84 points. Iowa State and Penn State tied for fourth with 78 1/2.

Iowa State's Cael Sanderson capped a storybook freshman season by winning the 184-pound weight class and the Most Outstanding Wrestler award. The top-seeded Sanderson went undefeated in 38 matches on the year, pinned three opponents in the championships and decisioned Minnesota's Brandon Eggum, 6-1, in the final.

"I try not to put too much pressure on myself and that worked out well," Sanderson said. "This is what we work for -- one tournament each year where we go out and prove ourselves in front of a huge audience. Things worked out great for me."

Doug Schwab in the 141-pound class and T. J. Williams at 149 keyed Iowa's championship. Schwab, a sophomore, beat Oklahoma's Michael Lightner, 4-2, in the final. His older brother, Mark, is an assistant coach for Minnesota.

Williams, a 5-3 winner over Northern Iowa's Tony Davis in the first-place match, also concluded an undefeated season at 40-0 with his crown. His older brother, Joe, was a three-time Division I champion for the Hawkeyes.

In addition to Neal, winner of all 44 of his matches this season and the last 83 of his career, Oklahoma State's Eric Guerrero and Minnesota's Tim Hartung successfully defended their titles. Guerrero won his third championship and remained perfect in 31 matches this year by defeating Iowa State's Cody Sanderson, 3-1, in the sudden-victory portion of overtime in the 133-pound final.

Hartung pushed his unblemished mark to 39-0 and concluded his career with 55 straight wins by defeating Iowa's Lee Fullhart, 2-1, in the 197-pound bracket. The two wrestlers certainly were familiar with each other; Hartung ran his career mark against Fullhart to 9-1.

The other remaining champions were Fresno State's Stephen Abas at 125, Central Michigan's Casey Cunningham at 157, Boise State's Kirk White at 165 and Penn State's Glenn Pritzlaff at 174. Cunningham and White became their schools' first Division I wrestling champions. Abas is just the second from Fresno State.

The finals session attendance at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center was 14,055, a sellout just as the first five sessions were, bringing the tournament total to 80,654. It marks just the third time in the championship's history that total attendance eclipsed the 80,000 mark.
