Record score helps Alaska Fairbanks snap West Virginia streak

Led by Kelly Mansfield, Alaska Fairbanks shot a meet-record aggregate team score of 6,276 and snapped West Virginia's streak of four consecutive titles at the National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships March 12-13 at Norwich.

The title was the second for the Nanooks, the only team other than the Mountaineers to have won since 1985. Alaska Fairbanks' other championship came in 1994.

In smallbore, where the champions set another record by shooting 4,713, Mansfield shot 1,182, Melissa Mulloy 1,180 and Dan Jordan, 1,178 to lead the Nanooks. In air rifle, where Alaska Fairbanks equalled the meet record of 1,563 it set in 1989, Mulloy and Jordan each shot 392. Mansfield shot 391.

Mansfield won the individual smallbore and air rifle championships, which are held separate from the team championships. She is the first to have won the double title since Tennessee Tech's Rod Fitz-Randolph in 1980, the first year the event was held. In smallbore, she shot 1,185, with a 399 in the prone position, 394 standing and 392 kneeling. Teammate Johan Lindberg was second with 1,172. In air rifle, Mansfield edged defending champion Emily Caruso of the hosts, 396 to 395. Mansfield finished third in air rifle last year. Jordan was second.

Mansfield's individual titles were the Nanooks' first since 1995, when Oleg Seleznev won smallbore. Alaska Fairbanks had never before won an individual air rifle championship. The Nanooks have five individual titles overall.
