NSCAA recognizes 114 institutions with 1998 Team Academic Awards

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has named 114 NCAA soccer teams as recipients of the NSCAA's fourth annual Team Academic Award.

The award recognizes teams' academic performances during the calendar year. To be eligible, teams must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.000 or higher (4.000 scale) for the year. Only those athletes who appear on the official NCAA squad list for fall 1998 are eligible in calculating the grade-point average.

Women's teams from Case Western Reserve and New Mexico earned the award for a fourth consecutive season.

The NSCAA also named its second annual men's and women's Scholar Athletes of the Year. They are senior forward Jay Heaps of Duke and senior midfielder Emily Stauffer of Harvard.

The award honors the top male and female collegiate soccer player based on academic and athletics performance. They head the NSCAA's men's and women's Scholar-Athlete All-America teams.

Stauffer is Harvard's all-time assists leader and graduated with honors in January. A team captain, Stauffer is a two-time Ivy Group player of the year.

Heaps shared top goal-scoring honors for the Blue Devils and led the team in points scored with 34. Heaps also was among Atlantic Coast Conference leaders in points, goals and assists.

The individual and team awards were presented at the NSCAA's annual convention in January in Philadelphia.
