Hurlbut resigns post at Patriot League

Connie Hurlbut resigned as executive director of the Patriot League to become director of basketball operations for the Women's National Basketball Association.

Hurlbut, who was appointed as executive director in December 1992, was the first woman to lead a men's and women's joint all-sport conference and was one of three female commissioners at the NCAA Division I level. In more than five years with the Patriot League, Hurlbut established the conference's first basketball television package and its first basketball officiating bureau. Also, for the last five years the league has ranked first in graduation-rate success among Division I conferences.

Hurlbut was appointed to the NCAA Council in July 1995 and was a member of the Division I Management Council. She also has been an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.

Before joining the Patriot League, Hurlbut served as the first associate executive director of the Ivy Group. She also worked as an intern with the Eastern College Athletic Conference before accepting an assistant commissioner post with the conference in 1984, a position she held for two years.

Hurlbut graduated from Pennsylvania in 1983.

The league chose 11-year conference veteran Todd Newcomb as interim executive director. A 1988 graduate of Bucknell, he served as an intern with the conference in 1988 and became its first full-time media relations director in 1989. Newcomb has been associate executive director for three years.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dickinson appointed William G. Durden as president. Durden has been president of Sylvan Academy of Sylvan Learning Systems and vice-president for academic affairs at Caliber Learning Network ... Niagara President Paul L. Golden resigned, effective June 30 ... Harry Payne resigned as president at Williams, effective June 2000 ... Delta State's F. Kent Wyatt announced plans to retire as president, effective June 30.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Ron Zwierlein, athletics director at Bowling Green, accepted additional responsibilities as senior associate vice-president for student affairs. Zwierlein has been athletics director for five years ... Alaska Anchorage elevated Harry Larrabee, interim athletics director since July 1, 1998, to director of intercollegiate athletics, succeeding Timothy J. Dillon. Larrabee has been senior associate athletics director at the school since 1993 and head women's basketball coach since 1996 ... Terry Logue named athletics director at Westminster (Missouri) after serving in an interim capacity since March 1, 1998. Logue has been sports information director and radio play-by-play announcer ... David Brown selected as athletics director and football coach at Lawrence.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Big Sky Conference associate commissioner Kathy Noble assumed senior woman administrator and associate athletics director responsibilities at Georgia Tech. Noble, who succeeds Ida Neal Smith, has been with the conference since 1995 and presently serves on the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Longwood chose Sally W. Gilfillan as faculty athletics representative to succeed Wayne McWee. Gilfillan has been with the school since 1984 and is an associate professor of accounting.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Michigan chose Nan Allen-Bell as associate athletics director for student-athlete support programs ... Scott Farmer appointed as associate director of athletics at Troy State ... New Mexico hired Darren Dunn as associate athletics director of corporate development.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Dennis Wills elevated to assistant athletics director for academic services and compliance at Illinois-Chicago. Since 1996, Wills has been director of academic services ... Ralph Manning chosen as assistant athletics director for academics and compliance at Chattanooga ... Metropolitan State elevated Steve Allen and Brian Crookham to assistant athletics directors. Allen will continue to serve as sports information director and will assume additional marketing and promotions responsibilities. Crookham will remain as head men's soccer coach and compliance coordinator and will accept additional academics, scholarships and facilities duties ... Joe Rotellini relinquished his head football coaching duties at Salisbury State to become assistant director of athletics at the school.

Baseball assistant--Cornell hired Ryan Jacobs as an assistant to succeed Bill Petsche, who resigned.

Men's basketball--Pittsburgh head coach Ralph Willard resigned after five years, effective at the end of the season ... Cal Luther announced plans to retire as head coach at Tennessee-Martin, effective at the end of the season.

Men's basketball assistant--John Dunne promoted to full-time assistant coach at Manhattan.

Women's basketball--San Jose State head coach Karen Smith resigned, effective at the end of the season ... Newberry head coach Peggy Barnes resigned, effective at the end of the season. Barnes, who has been with the program for 11 years and served the last seven as head coach, will continue to fulfill senior woman administrator responsibilities

Women's basketball assistant--Seton Hall added Dana Wynne as interim assistant coach.

Women's crew--Mark Wilson appointed as head coach at Indiana.

Men's and women's cross country--Leigh Officer hired as head men's and women's coach at Creighton to succeed John Shorey. Officer has coached at Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska, for seven years ... St. Bonaventure named Jay Wilson as men's and women's head coach.

Field hockey--Kim Simons, head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Georgetown, resigned as field hockey coach to focus on the women's lacrosse program. Simons guided the field hockey program for four seasons and built a 39-26 record. She has been women's lacrosse coach since 1996 ... Maureen Horan named as head coach at Drew, replacing interim head coach Julie Clark. Horan previously was head field hockey coach at the school from 1981 to 1990 ... Mary Milne resigned as head coach at Ohio after 10 seasons. The school named assistant coach Shelly Morris as interim head coach.

Football--Jim Foster resigned as head coach at Nichols. The school promoted Bill Carven to replace Foster as head coach. For the past three years, Carven has served as recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks/ receivers coach, and last season he was offensive coordinator ... Delta State appointed Steve Campbell as head coach ... Jerry Kill selected as head coach at Emporia State ... Oberlin named Jeff Ramsey as head coach ... East Carolina head coach Steve Logan awarded a one-year contract extension through the 2003 season ... Chuck Solberg, head coach at Lewis & Clark, announced plans to retire. Men's ice hockey--Bill Wilkinson, head coach at Western Michigan, reassigned to special assistant to director of athletics. The school appointed Jim Culhane as interim head coach.

Men's lacrosse--Bill Bjorness appointed as interim head coach at Hartwick.

Men's lacrosse assistants--Jim Rogalski named as an assistant coach at Goucher. Rogalski, who succeeds John McDonough, has been an assistant at Western New England ... Wentworth Institute selected Aaron Koproski as an assistant. Koproski has been an assistant at Potsdam State for two seasons.

Women's lacrosse--C.W. Post chose Karen MacCrate as head coach ... Mike Lackemacher replaces Stephanie Carter as head coach at Greensboro. Last season, Lackemacher was an assistant ... Karen Murdock Lahey chosen as head coach at Merrimack ... Greg Styles appointed as head coach at Central Connecticut State ... Wesleyan (Connecticut) named Nicole Smith as interim head coach to succeed Gale Lackey. Smith served as an assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at the school in 1997-98 and as assistant field hockey coach in 1998.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Kristan Bonavita appointed as an assistant coach at Catholic.

Men's soccer--Ozarks (Arkansas) head coach Scott Placek resigned to join a private law firm in Austin, Texas. Placek, who established the men's and women's programs three years ago, served as head men's and women's coach for two seasons and head men's coach last season ... Andrew Smith, head women's soccer coach at Marywood, accepted additional responsibilities as head men's soccer coach ... Mount St. Mary (New York) chose Chris Knittel as head coach ... John Osborne retired as head coach at Dickinson, closing his tenure with a 107-83-11 mark. The school appointed Aron Bassoff, an assistant with the program, as head coach.

Men's soccer assistant--Marywood's Tim Borick resigned as assistant men's soccer coach and assistant men's tennis coach, effective May 1999.

Women's soccer--Troy State hired Qasim Sheikh as head coach. Sheikh has spent the last two seasons as head coach at Tennessee Tech ... Peggy Graham-Matthews selected as head coach at Rider... Western Carolina named Debbie Hensley as head coach ... Randy Waldrum resigned as head coach at Baylor to become head coach at Notre Dame ... Tom Romano added as head coach at New Jersey Tech.

Softball--Morningside added Jessica Jones as head coach.

Softball assistant--Missouri Western State hired Janel Ikeda as an assistant.

Men's and women's tennis--Phil Chamberlain selected as head men's coach at Memphis ... Marywood head men's coach Keith Hetsko resigned after five years, effective at the end of the 1999 season ... Jeff Vaage resigned as head women's coach at Drake ... Morgan State appointed Samuel R. Knisley as head men's and women's coach to replace Gregory Ogle. Knisley has been head men's and women's tennis coach at Catonsville (Maryland) Community College for 23 years.

Men's and women's track and field--Derek Yush hired as part-time interim head men's and women's coach at Eastern Connecticut State. Yush succeeds Kathy Manizza, who will remain as an assistant with the program.

Men's and women's volleyball--Roger Williams selected Michael D. Holden as head men's coach. Since 1996, Holden has served as head boys' volleyball coach at Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical School in Massachusetts ... Dean Miller added as head coach at Pfeiffer. Miller has been on the Virginia Beach Volleyball Circuit for the past five years and has coached on the high-school and collegiate levels ... Binghamton head women's coach Colleen Cashman resigned after two seasons ... Patty Jayne resigned as head coach at Portland ... Iowa Wesleyan chose Brian Meeter as head women's coach to replace Jeff Meeker, who resigned ... Washington (Maryland) hired Jennifer Miller as head coach ... Development--John Byrne, head softball coach at Moravian for the past five years, awarded additional duties as executive director of the Blue and Grey Club and assistant to the director of athletics ... Indiana State appointed James E. Norton as director of athletics development. Norton was a major gifts officer for athletics and the college of business at Central Michigan.

Marketing and promotions--New Mexico's Sean Johnson resigned as director of marketing and promotions to accept a position with Universal Sports America in Dallas.

Strength and conditioning--David Napert selected as strength and conditioning coach at Chattanooga.

Student-athlete development--Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) chose Marchelle Lane as director of student-athlete development. Lane has been director of student-athlete development at Detroit since 1995.

CONFERENCES

Peg Campana selected as supervisor of volleyball officials for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. Succeeding Denise Izaat, Campana has been a volleyball official in the Big Ten Conference, Conference USA, Missouri Valley Conference and Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

The Mid-Continent Conference selected Kim Vieira, head boys' coach at Hamilton (Ohio) High School for the past three years, as supervisor of men's and women's soccer officials. Vieira, formerly head coach at Wingate and Hollins, has been a member of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association's executive council since 1990.

Texas-San Antonio assistant athletics director Michelle Perry resigned to become assistant commissioner for championships for the Mountain West Conference.

AGREEMENTS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has reached an agreement with the College Athlet- ic Business Management Association (CABMA) to serve as administrator of the association. Services provided by NACDA are membership functions, including member solicitation and dues payments, meeting planning and general administrative duties. This will be the seventh association that NACDA will administer. The others are: the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, the National Association of Athletic Development Directors, the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators, the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association, the Division II Athletics Directors Association and the National Collegiate Licensing Association.

The Southern Conference and Total Sports, Inc., announced a three-year partnership that includes a new Southern Conference Web site. The site, located at www. SoConSports.com, will include up-to-date information on the conference and all conference sports, championships and corporate partners.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America selected the following to the executive committee: Jim Thieser, senior vice-president for conventions; Mike Berticelli, vice-president of education; and Janet Rayfield, secretary.

Texas A&M head baseball coach Mark Johnson has been named as head coach of the 1999 USA Baseball National Team, succeeding Ron Polk. Johnson is beginning his 15th season at Texas A&M and has collected three Southwest Conference titles and one Big 12 Conference championship during his tenure. Jerry Kindall, former Arizona head coach and current USA Baseball senior advisor to national teams/alumni affairs; Keith Madison, head coach at Kentucky; and Rod Soesbe, head coach at UNLV, have been appointed as assistant coaches.

The Greater Cincinnati Sports Corporation appointed Michael J. Milidonis as its first executive director. Milidonis was director of competition for the 1998 Goodwill Games and has been a USA Gymnastics board member for 25 years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Randy Buhr appointed as membership services representative. Most recently, Buhr served as assistant director of compliance at Oregon.

Information regarding the participation of fencers in a women's sabre exhibition at the 1999 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships was incorrectly stated in a January 18 article in The NCAA News. The statement should have read that women fencers who have been selected to compete in the championships are eligible to participate in the sabre exhibition.

The following are winners of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas National Player of the Year awards for men and women in Divisions I, II and III: Men--Dema Kovalenko, Indiana; Gilbert Jean-Baptiste, Southern Connecticut State; Robert Mouw, Wheaton (Illinois). Women--Danielle Fotopoulos, Florida; Jannie Nicolaisen, Lynn; Tawni Epperson, Macalester.

The College Golf Foundation named Jackie Tobian-Steinmann, head women's golf coach at UCLA since 1977, winner of the Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service award presented for outstanding service and contributions to women's collegiate golf. Tobian-Steinmann, who also won the award in 1986, is the first coach to earn the honor twice. The foundation also named former Brigham Young head men's coach Karl Tucker as winner of the Rolex Honor award presented for outstanding service and contributions to men's collegiate golf. Tucker collected 18 Western Athletic Conference championships through his 31-season stint as head coach.

The Golf Coaches Association of America inducted Jimmy Clayton, Sonny Dragoin and Joe Feaganes into its Hall of Fame. Clayton formerly served as head coach at Texas for 16 years and Dragoin captured two Southeastern Conference championships during his 25-year tenure as head coach at Auburn. Feaganes has been head coach at Marshall for 28 years and is a former chair of the NCAA Men's Golf Committee.
