Neuheisel named head coach at Washington

Washington has hired Rick Neuheisel as head coach to succeed Jim Lambright.

Neuheisel joined Colorado as quarterbacks and receivers coach in February of 1994 and was promoted to head coach in November of the same year. He closes his four-year tenure as head coach with a 33-14 mark. Prior to his stint at Colorado, Neuheisel served as an assistant coach at UCLA from 1988 to 1993.

Neuheisel played quarterback at UCLA, earning MVP honors at the 1984 Rose Bowl his senior year. He also received academic all-Pacific 10 Conference recognition as a senior and is a former NCAA postgraduate scholarship winner.

On a professional level, he competed in the United States Football League for two seasons and played for the National Football League's San Diego Chargers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the 1987 season.

Neuheisel earned a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA in 1984 and a juris doctorate from Southern California in 1990.

Eleanor Brantley Schwartz resigned after seven years as chancellor at Missouri-Kansas City, effective February 1.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bill McLellan, director of athletics at Southern Mississippi, announced plans to retire ... Butch Henry resigned as athletics director at Florida International to accept the position of general manager of Crimson Tide Sports Marketing. Henry has been athletics director since August of 1997. The school selected associate athletics director Jose Sotolongo as acting athletics director ... Margo Harbison announced plans to retire as athletics director and head of the department of health and physical education at Texas A&M-Commerce, effective July 8. Harbison has been athletics director since July 1988 and has been a member of the NCAA Division II Restructuring Committee and the Postgraduate Scholarship Committee. The school selected Paul Peak, head men's basketball coach since 1991, as Harbison's successor ... Carl F. Schraibman resigned as director of athletics and recreation at Wittenberg, effective August 31.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Cornell hired Anita Brenner as senior woman administrator/associate director of athletics to succeed Dianne Murphy, who resigned to become director of athletics and recreation at Denver. Brenner has been with Cornell as associate director/athletics liaison for the undergraduate admissions office since 1995.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Akron appointed Mary Lu Gribschaw as associate athletics director for team services. Gribschaw, who succeeds Dawn Rogers, has been academic advisor for student-athletes at the school for the past three and a half years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Paul Parker hired as assistant athletics director for compliance and marketing at Southwest Baptist. Since 1996, Parker has been director of compliance and home-game operations at VMI ... Quinnipiac named Amanda Long assistant athletics director for compliance and student services. Since August 1998, Long has been assistant compliance coordinator and event management supervisor at Cornell ... Bob Burda promoted to assistant athletics director-communications at Miami (Florida). For the past three seasons, Burda has been the media contact for the football team ... Clemson named Donald Hymel as assistant athletics director for football relations ... Terry Owens resigned as assistant director of athletics and sports information director at Wisconsin-Stevens Point to become director of athletics at Stevens Point Pacelli High School ... Hunter hired Lauren Caiaccia as assistant athletics director and head men's and women's volleyball coach. Caiaccia has been assistant women's volleyball coach and athletics department administrative assistant at Binghamton ... Bryant hired Coni Fichera as assistant athletics director for compliance, coordinator of the academic support program for student-athletes and head field hockey coach. Women's basketball--Ithaca announced the resignation of head coach Christine Pritchard. In 14 seasons, Pritchard built a 201-137 record and closes her tenure as the school's most-victorious women's basketball coach ... Don Perrelli, head coach at Northwestern, announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the season ... Pennsylvania's Julie Soriero resigned, effective at the end of the season, after 10 years as head coach.

Women's basketball assistant--Krista Gerlich resigned as an assistant coach at Texas-San Antonio.

Men's and women's crew--Syracuse selected Chris Ludden as men's assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country--Doreen Landis named head men's and women's cross country and women's track and field coach at Grove City. Landis has most recently worked as a personal fitness trainer and massage therapist.

Football--Western Montana head coach Nels Kludt resigned ... Oregon State hired Dennis Erickson to succeed Mike Riley. Erickson was released at the end of the 1998 season after four years as head coach of the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks ... Mississippi Valley State named LaTraia Jones head coach ... Todd Knight resigned as head coach at Delta State to accept the head coaching post at Ouachita Baptist ... Emporia State head coach Manny Matsakis resigned to become the offensive coordinator at Wyoming ... Men's lacrosse--Tim Nelson accepted head men's lacrosse and men's assistant soccer coaching posts at Utica ... Rory Whipple selected as head men's coach at Bryant. The team is slated to begin intercollegiate play in the spring of 2000. For the past 11 seasons, Whipple has been head coach at Hartwick.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Manhattan chose Paul DeVito as an assistant.

Women's lacrosse--Ohio named Anne Moelk as women's lacrosse coach. Moelk has been an assistant lacrosse coach at Ohio State since 1996.

Women's lacrosse assistants--Shayna Cohen named associate coach at Quinnipiac. Cohen has most recently served as an assistant women's lacrosse coach at Kean ... Wendy Walker and Greg Munro added as assistants at Holy Cross. Walker is a 1998 graduate of William Smith and served as an assistant at the school last fall. From 1996-98, Munro coached at Assumption, and he is the owner/director of the Player's Choice Lacrosse Camps.

Men's and women's rifle--King's (Pennsylvania) announced Sarah Zydallas as head coach to replace George Brenzovitch, who accepted the head coaching position at UTEP.

Men's soccer--Chris Crist resigned as head coach at Mars Hill, effective January 29.

Men's soccer assistants--John Barrett chosen as an assistant at Duke ... Ken Nuber resigned as head men's coach at St. Francis (Indiana). Nuber was head men's and women's coach at the school.

Women's soccer--Andrea Zeigler appointed head coach at Bridgewater State. For the past six seasons, Zeigler has been head women's soccer coach at Curry ... Kean appointed Brian Doherty as head coach ... George Dunbar appointed as head coach at Philadelphia Textile.

Women's soccer assistant--Penn State-Behrend appointed Mary Ann Rupp as an assistant.

Softball--Colorado College added Shane Showalter as head coach. Showalter has coached on the high-school level since 1996 and has served as an assistant coach at Adams State for the last three years ... Missouri Western State head coach Mary Nichols resigned, effective June 30, to pursue graduate studies. Nichols has been head coach for 12 seasons and formerly coached the school's women's volleyball team from 1987 to 1992. The school appointed assistant coach Jill Bailey as interim head coach ... Minnesota promoted associate head coach Julie Standering to cohead coach. Standering has been with the program since 1991.

Softball assistant--Lori Cook chosen as an assistant at Baylor to succeed Jodi Burch, who resigned. Cook has been an assistant coach at Cosumnes River (California) College for three years.

Men's and women's swimming assistant--Mark Babin named assistant swimming coach at Maine. Babin has been head coach of the Bay Area Swim Club in Belfast, Maine, since 1996.

Men's and women's tennis--Christina Mullin named as head men's coach at Methodist. Mullin has spent the last year teaching private lessons ... West Texas A&M promoted Ignacio "Nacho" Ruiz to head men's and women's coach. Ruiz, who has been an assistant with the program, succeeds Bill Willis.

Men's and women's tennis assistant--Jeremy Plumley added as an assistant men's and women's coach at Methodist.

Men's and women's track and field--South Alabama elevated Brad Bowman to head men's and women's track and cross country coach. Bowman, who replaces Steve Thomas, has been head women's track and cross country coach for the past year and a half.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Maine chose Mark Lech as assistant track coach to replace Anne Maxim, who resigned after eight years ... Joe Walker hired as men's and women's track and field and cross country assistant at South Alabama. Walker was head track coach at Meridian Community College for three seasons and head cross country coach at the school for four years ... Rhode Island College hired Valerie Verducci as assistant indoor and outdoor track and field coach. Verducci presently works as a fitness specialist and personal trainer with Healthtrax of New England.

Men's and women's volleyball--Cathy Skinner resigned as women's head coach at Fordham ... Nova Southeastern women's head coach Charyl Morgan resigned.

Water polo--Brown selected Todd Clapper as men's interim coach.

Athletic training assistant--Renee Kleszczynski selected as an assistant athletic trainer at St. Bonaventure.

Sports information--John Sudsbury resigned as sports information director at Adelphi ... Ken DeBolt accepted the director of sports information position at Hobart and William Smith ... Samford hired Blair Cash as sports information director. Cash was assistant sports information director at Southwest Texas State and replaces Riley Adair, who resigned ... Jim McKone, sports information director at Texas-Pan American for the past 30 years, announced plans to retire, effective April 30.

Sports information assistants--Stetson assistant sports information director Mike Mandujano resigned, effective January 30 ... Margaret Belch selected as a sports information assistant at George Mason. Belch has been a volunteer intern in the school's sports information office since June 1998.

Sports medicine--Vincent N. Disabella appointed as sports medicine physician at Delaware.

Strength and conditioning--Corey Edmond resigned as strength and conditioning coach at Chattanooga.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Clemson appointed Larry Greenlee as assistant strength and conditioning coach.

AGREEMENTS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has secured the support of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in providing funding for the newly-formed John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards. The AFCA will contribute $100,000 to the program over the next five years through monies derived from NACDA's preseason Kickoff and Pigskin Classics. The AFCA is the first organization to join the NACDA in funding this program.

CONFERENCES

The Southwestern Athletic Conference chose George H. Coleman as coordinator of football officials and Charles McElroy as coordinator of baseball officials.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference appointed Brian Bolten as general manager of MAAC properties.

Jerry Ippoliti, commissioner of the Mid-American Conference, announced his retirement, effective June 30. Ippoliti has been commissioner since July 1, 1994.

ASSOCIATIONS

USA Baseball hired David Fanucchi as administrative assistant and director of publications. Fanucchi has been media relations director for Major League Baseball's Arizona Fall League.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America elected Laurie Whitsel as president. Whitsel becomes the organization's first female president. A former head women's soccer coach at West Virginia Wesleyan and Hamilton, Whitsel served as the NSCAA's vice-president of education from 1995 to 1998.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Keith Gill, membership services representative, resigned to become an assistant athletics director at Vanderbilt ... Stann Tate resigned as assistant director of championships, a position he has held since 1994. Tate accepted a position with Berstein-Rien, an advertising firm in Kansas City ... Membership services representatives David Batson, Lynn Holzman, John Morris and Liz Muir have been promoted to membership services representative II/team coordinators.

The recruiting calendar that appeared in recent issues of The NCAA News incorrectly described the status of January 31 for Division I football. That day is a quiet period.


NOTABLES

The Missouri-Kansas City women's volleyball team captured the John McKenna Award presented by the Mid-Continent Conference to the women's volleyball team with the highest cumulative grade-point average during the season. Missouri-Kansas City maintained a 3.250 GPA throughout the 1998 fall semester to earn the honor for the second time in three seasons.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame named sportscaster Keith Jackson as recipient of the 1999 Gold Medal Award. The honor is the highest given by the foundation and is presented to individuals who demonstrated integrity, achieved success and carried the basic values taught in amateur sport into their professional lives. Jackson, who has been affiliated with college football since 1952, served as a broadcaster for Washington sports events for eight years and play-by-play announcer for Washington State for four years before joining ABC full-time in 1964. A five-time winner of the Sportscaster of the Year award, Jackson also has covered 10 Summer and Winter Olympics, Major League Baseball, basketball, boxing and championship auto racing.

The American Football Coaches Association recognized Tennessee's Phil Fulmer, Massachusetts' Mark Whipple, Northwest Missouri State's Mel Tjeerdsma and Mount Union's Larry Kehres as 1998 GTE Coach of the Year winners for Divisions I, I-AA, II and III. Fulmer lead his team to a 13-0 season and the school's first national championship since 1951. Whipple's squad went 12-3 and Tjeerdsma's 15-0 en route to their first I-AA and II national championships in 1998. Kehres, a four-time GTE Coach of the Year honoree, collected Mount Union's fourth national championship in six years.

Misty May, a senior on the Long Beach State women's volleyball team, was named a Honda Award winner for being the top collegiate athlete in her sport. A two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Year, May set an NCAA tournament record with 20 aces during Long Beach State's successful bid for the NCAA championship this season. She also has been selected as Big West Conference Player of the Year three times.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America presented the Bill Jeffrey Award to former Calvin head coach Marvin Zuidema. The honor is given annually in recognition of outstanding service and or achievement in collegiate soccer. Zuidema's tenure at Calvin spans 36 years and includes a 337-162-46 overall record. The organization also announced the following as Coaches of the Year for men and women Divisions I, II and III: Men--Jerry Yeagley, Indiana; Tom Lang, Southern Connecticut State; Jay Martin, Ohio Wesleyan. Women--Becky Burleigh, Florida; Luke Oberkirch, Sonoma State; John Leaney, Macalester.

Emily Stauffer of Harvard and Jay Heapes of Duke selected as winners of the second annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Stauffer, a senior midfielder, was the 1994 Ivy Group rookie of the year and Ivy Group player of the year in 1995 and 1996. She is Harvard's all-time assists leader and was named as one of the NCAA Today's Top VIII. Heaps, a senior forward who started all 20 games this season, is a first-team all-ACC selection. He led the team in shots and points with 72 and 34, respectively, and is tied for second in the ACC in points and tied for third in goals.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation named Tony Dorsett its 1998 Alumnus of the Year. Dorsett, a former all-pro running back for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, was the organization's player of the year in 1976. Dorsett also captured the Heisman Trophy that year. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Dorsett was the first NCAA player to collect four 1,000-yard rushing seasons.


DEATHS

Former Stephen F. Austin women's basketball player Katrina Price died in an apparent suicide. Price was 23. The school's all-time leading scorer with 2,278 points, she was slated to join the American Basketball League, but the organization filed for bankruptcy in December. Price started 120 games in her college career and was a three-time all-Southland Conference player and twice earned conference player-of-the-year honors.

Charles Branum, former women's head basketball coach at South Alabama, was found dead January 19. Branum, who served as head coach from 1982 to 1991, is the school's most-victorious women's basketball coach with a record of 182-110.

Phil Cutchin, former Oklahoma State football coach, died January 7, after an extended illness. Cutchin was 78.
