Selection process to begin for Leadership Conference

Early next month, more than 300 student-athletes will be selected to participate in the third annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, which will be held at Walt Disney World from May 31 to June 4.

The theme of the conference is "Today's Student-Athletes, Tomorrow's Leaders."

Members of all three NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees also will attend.

Through the use of thought-provoking dialogue and challenging activities, the conference aims to prepare a diverse group of student-athletes to take an active leadership role on their campuses and in their communities.

Participants will engage in a variety of developmental exercises designed to enhance their communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills, and they also will participate in collaborative projects and critical thinking.

The student-athletes will develop their leadership skills through interactive, hands-on work in small groups, and they also will have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences.

Participating student-athletes will represent all NCAA divisions, a variety of different sports, both genders and different ethnicities.

The student-athletes were nominated for the conference by their CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators.

Institutions that wish to join the CHAMPS/Life Skills program may submit an application for the 2000 class of CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators until June 29. Contact Lori A. Hendricks, NCAA education outreach coordinator, for more information.
