Committee notices

Division I

Division I candidates must be nominated by their institution's multisport conference. The Division I Nomination Form and Division I Nominee Information Form must be completed for each nominee. Nomination materials are to be sent to Julie Quickel, committee coordinator, at the national office (fax 913/339-0035).

The deadline for submission of completed nomination forms for the following vacancy is February 15, 1999.

Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee: One interim (immediate) vacancy. The appointee will replace Ida Neal-Smith, formerly of Georgia Institute of Technology. The appointee must be an ethnic minority. Eligible subdivisions: I-A, I-AA, I-AAA.

Men's Water Polo Committee: One vacancy. Due to the anticipated reclassification of the Northeast Conference from Division I-AAA to Division I-AA, a Division I-AAA vacancy will exist on the Men's Water Polo Committee. The appointee will replace Russell Yarworth, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, not eligible for reappointment. The appointee must be from Division I-AAA and preferably will be from the East region. Eligible subdivisions: I-AAA.

Baseball Rules Committee: One vacancy. The appointee will replace Bill Rowe, Southwest Missouri State University, not eligible for reappointment. The appointee must be from Division I-AAA. Eligible subdivisions: I-AAA.

Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports: One vacancy. The appointee will replace William Arnet, University of Missouri, Columbia, not eligible for reappointment. The appointee must represent the field of law. Eligible subdivisions: I-A, I-AA, I-AAA.

Division II

Division II individuals may be nominated by peers. Self nominations also are accepted in Division II. A Division II Nomination Form and Division II Nominee Information Form must be completed for each nominee. Division II Championships Committee: One interim vacancy. The appointee will replace Joseph T. Donahue, formerly of California State University, Stanislaus.

Division II Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee: One interim vacancy. The appointee will replace Lisa A. Cooper Colvin, Southern Arkansas University, who resigned from the committee due to her appointment to the Management Council. The appointee must be female and must represent men's track. The appointee must be from the South Central region.

The appointee must be from the West region and must be an athletics administrator who does not coach women's soccer.

Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee: One interim (immediate) vacancy. The appointee will replace Nicholas Evanich, Marietta College, who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be male and may not be from the following conferences: Empire Athletic, Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic, Massachusetts State College Athletic, Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic, Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic, New England Small College Athletic, New Jersey Athletic, Ohio Athletic, Skyline, Southern Collegiate or Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic.

Additional nominations solicited

In an effort to enhance diversity in the nomination pools, during its January 12, 1999, meeting the Division III Nominating Committee adopted an operating policy that states that when dealing with annual committee vacancies (not interim vacancies), the vacancies notice will be published in The NCAA News with a deadline for submission of nominations. Once the deadline has passed, if fewer than two nominations are received, a resolicitation for additional nominees with a new extended deadline will automatically occur, regardless of the qualifications of the single nominee.

Individuals who have submitted nomination materials for the following vacancies do not need to resubmit those materials. The Nominating Committee will review those nominations during a conference call in mid-March.

Division III Baseball Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must be from the Midwest region and one must be from the Mid-Atlantic region. One of the appointees must be an athletics administrator who does not coach baseball. Neither appointee may be from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference or the New Jersey Athletic Conference.

Division III Men's Basketball Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must be from the Northeast region and one must be from the Middle Atlantic region. One of the appointees must be an athletics administrator who does not coach men's basketball. Neither of the appointees may be from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference or the Centennial Conference.

Division III Women's Basketball Committee: One vacancy. The appointee must be from the Great Lakes region and must be an athletics administrator who does not coach women's basketball. The appointee may not be from the University Athletic Association.

Men's and Women's Fencing Committee: One vacancy. The appointee must represent men's fencing and must be from the West or Northeast region.

Division III Field Hockey Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must be from the North Atlantic region and one must be from the South Atlantic region. Neither of the appointees may be from the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Conference or the Middle Atlantic States Conference.

Division III Football Committee: One vacancy. The appointee must be from the South region. The appointee may be from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Divisions III Women's Golf Committee: Two vacancies. Due to the adoption of Convention Proposal No. 37, a Division III Women's Golf Committee has been established. The current Division III members of the Divisions II/III Women's Golf Committee will serve on the new committee. However, there are two vacancies, effective September 1999. One appointee must be from the West district and one must be from the Great Lakes district. Neither of the appointees may be from the American Southwest Conference.

Division III Women's Lacrosse Committee: One vacancy. The appointee must be from the South Atlantic region and may not be from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Division III Men's Soccer Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must be from the Mid-Atlantic region and one must be from the West region. Neither of the appointees may be from the Centennial Conference or the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Division III Women's Softball Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must be from the East region and one must be from the Central region. At least one of the appointees must be an athletics administrator who does not coach women's softball. Neither of the appointees may be from the Middle Atlantic States Conference or the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must represent men's tennis and must be from the West region. One appointee must represent women's tennis and must be from the South region. At least one of the appointees must be an athletics administrator who does not coach tennis. Neither of the appointees may be from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference or the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee: Two vacancies. One appointee must represent men's track and one must represent women's track. One appointee must be from the Midwest region and one must be from the New York region. Neither of the appointees may be from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference or the University Athletic Association.

Baseball Rules Committee: One vacancy. The appointee may not be from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Memorial Resolutions Committee: One vacancy. The appointee must be from Division III.

Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee: Two Division III vacancies. Both appointees must be ethnic minorities and may not be from the State University of New York Athletic Conference.

Recently appointed committee/cabinet members

Terms of service for members of the Division I Board of Directors, Divisions II and III Presidents Councils and Divisions II and III Management Councils expire each January. Terms of members of Division III general committees also expire in January each year. Due to recent changes in the composition of the presidential bodies, Management Councils and selected committees, the following information is provided. Please make the appropriate changes in the 1998-99 NCAA Committee Directory, which will be edited and redistributed in early summer 1999.

For convenience of reference, an accompanying chart (see page 16) includes the complete rosters of the Executive Committee, and presidential bodies and Management Councils in each membership division. These rosters replace those listed in the 1998-99 Committee Directory.

For the remaining committees, the following changes are listed below (effective immediately):

Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse Committee: Marjorie Trout, Millersville University of Pennsylvania, replaces Robert T. Becker, Saginaw Valley State University, as the Division II Management Council on the committee.

Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee: Peggy L. Green, Fayetteville State University, Division II Management Council representative on the committee; Christopher Walker, University of Redlands, replaces Mary Jo Gunning, Marywood University, as the Division III Management Council Representative on the Committee.

National Youth Sports Program Committee: Gail Fults, Humboldt State University, the Division II Management Council representative on the committee.

Olympic Sports Liaison Committee: Leslie Poolman, Dickinson College, replaces Mary Jo Gunning, Marywood University, as the Division III Management Council representative on the committee.

Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee: Michael L. Covone, Barry University, replaces Ed Harris, West Texas A&M University.

Committee on Women's Athletics: Kathryn Springsteen, Colby-Sawyer College, replaces Richard A. Rasmussen, University Athletic Association, as the Division III Management Council representative on the committee.
