III presidents recommend priorities for cost-savings decisions

SAN ANTONIO -- During its pre-Convention meeting January 10, the Division III Presidents Council addressed several matters related to the Convention, including Convention legislation.

The Council also addressed several issues relating to cost-saving initiatives, endorsing the proposed sale of the NCAA aircraft and recommending a list of priorities for the NCAA Executive Committee to consider when making cost-savings decisions, emphasizing the retention of flexibility in travel arrangements.

The Presidents Council recommended the retention of four meetings per year for the Division III Management Council, Presidents Council and Executive Committee, while conducting at least one Presidents Council meeting per year via teleconference when possible.

The Presidents Council also:

  • Endorsed the creation of a national NCAA sportsmanship award and the creation of a gambling education video.

  • Endorsed support for gender equity, a gender-equity audit and the proactive implementation of policies addressing its findings, as appropriate. It also endorsed the Management Council's recommendation to support, in concept, efforts to hire and/or promote women in top management positions of the NCAA national office and assignment of responsibility for women's issues to the highest management level at the national office.

  • Endorsed recommendations of the Management Council's All-Star Contest Certification Subcommittee encouraging institutions to review policies, practices and institutional insurance coverage related to all-star competition practices. It also approved recommendation to sponsor legislation at the NCAA 2000 Convention to address several issues regarding all-star contests.

  • Agreed to sponsor legislation to include a student-athlete representative on the Division III Subcommittee for Student-Athlete Reinstatement.

  • Agreed to recommend that the Executive Committee sponsor legislation to amend the NCAA's Principle of Nondiscrimination.

  • Reviewed the revised Association-wide budgeting process, expressing a desire that Division III have an instrumental role in the process.

  • Reviewed future budgeting priorities for Division III, including an initiative to enhance and make more uniform the championships experience for all student-athletes in Division III.

  • Received an update from NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey on numerous issues facing the Association now and in the near future.

  • Received a federal relations report from Doris A. Dixon, NCAA director of federal relations.
