Stinchcomb, McGuffey head GTE football academic teams

Georgia offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb and quarterback Corte McGuffey of Northern Colorado are this year's GTE Academic All-America Team Members of the Year in football.

Stinchcomb, who made the university division first team for the second straight year, helped lead the Bulldogs to an 8-3 record and a berth in the Peach Bowl. He also was one of 12 finalists for the Lombardi Award, which honors the nation's outstanding lineman.

Stinchcomb also was named as one of the NCAA's Today's Top VIII, a group of distinguished student-athletes recognized at the NCAA honors dinner January 10.

McGuffey, a junior, finished second in Division II in passing efficiency, and was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which recognizes the Division II player of the year.

McGuffey in 11 games completed 189 of 299 passes for 2,547 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Bears, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II Football Championship.

The GTE Academic All-America Teams in football were selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Team members are varsity starters or key reserves who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale)
