Susquehanna elevates Briggs to head coach

Susquehanna has promoted Tim Briggs to head baseball coach, succeeding two-year head coach Rich Mease.

Briggs has been an assistant with the Susquehanna baseball squad for the past two seasons in addition to serving as defensive coordinator with the school's football program for three seasons. Prior to joining Susquehanna athletics, Briggs coached at American International. In seven seasons, Briggs fulfilled several roles including head junior varsity football coach, defensive line, linebackers and special teams coach, and defensive coordinator.

Briggs was a three-time letter-winner as a football defensive tackle at Western New England where he served as cocaptain in 1987.

Briggs earned his bachelor's degree at Western New England in 1988 and his master's degree at American International in 1992.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Toledo promoted Vik Kapoor, dean of the college of engineering, to president, effective January 1 ... Larry D. Large named as president at Oglethorpe, effective April 1. Large has been executive vice-president at Reed College.

Richard B. Flynn named as president at Springfield, effective March 1, 1999. Flynn has been interim president at Peru State College ... Chadron elevated Thomas L. Krepel to president. Krepel has been interim president at the school ... Nathanael Pollard Jr. resigned as president at Bowie State ... Miami (Ohio) President Phillip R. Shriver announced plans to retire, effective June 1999.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Victor A. Clark, athletics director and head football coach at Thomas More, resigned to accept a post at Idaho. The school named Sharri Brumfield, head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics director, as interim athletics director ... Ouachita Baptist athletics director Buddy Benson announced retirement plans, effective June 1, 1999. The school selected David Sharp, currently defensive coordinator for the football program, as athletics director. Benson joined the athletics program in 1961 as an assistant football coach and was named athletics director in 1996 ... Joan McDermott, head volleyball coach and senior woman administrator at Metropolitan State, promoted to director of athletics, replacing Bill Helman, who retired. McDermott, who will relinquish her head coaching duties, has been interim athletics director since November.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Southwest Texas chose Larry Teis as associate athletics director for external operations.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Mary E. Huff appointed assistant athletics director at Wellesley. Huff most recently served as athletics administration intern at Colgate.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Dayton chose Megan McCallister, assistant director of athletics at the school, as senior woman administrator ... Lynn M. Tubman resigned as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Drexel, effective January 13, 1999. Tubman has been with the school since April 1996. The school appointed head men's and women's tennis coach Laura White as interim assistant athletics director/senior woman administrator.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Franklin & Marshall selected Rahsaan Carlton as an assistant.

Women's basketball--Laura Mitchell resigned as head coach and sports information director at UC Santa Cruz. She will fill an administrative position in the office of physical education at the school through June 1999.

Football--Don Miller, the most-victorious football coach in the history of Trinity (Connecticut), announced plans to step down. In 32 years as head coach, Miller has compiled a 174-77-5 record ... East Central appointed Dennis Darnell as head coach ... Fordham head coach Ken O'Keefe resigned to become offensive coordinator at Iowa. O'Keefe closes his one-year stint at Fordham with a 4-7 overall mark ... Mike Santiago named as head coach at Stephen F. Austin ... Ouachita Baptist head coach Jimmy "Red" Parker resigned after three years ... Ed Rifilato appointed as interim head coach at New Mexico Highlands ... Midwestern State named Linwood Ferguson as head coach. Ferguson has been defensive coordinator at Murray State for the past two seasons ... John Banaszak appointed as head coach at Washington and Jefferson to succeed John Luckhardt, who announced plans to retire ... Westminster (Missouri) promoted John Welty to head coach. Welty, assistant head coach and defensive coordinator since August, succeeds three-year head coach Ralph Young, who resigned ... Randy Edsall named as head coach at Connecticut ... Henderson State hired Patrick Nix as head coach. Nix has been quarterbacks coach and passing coordinator at Jacksonville State.

Football assistants-- Mississippi added Richard Bisaccia and Mike MacIntyre as assistants ... Derek Hannaford selected as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Missouri Western ... Oklahoma named Mike Leach as offensive coordinator ... Charlie Strong chosen as defensive coordinator at South Carolina ... Southwestern Louisiana chose Leon Tolbert as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator ... Illinois selected Robert Jackson as receivers coach ... Derek "Bo" Hannaford chosen as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Missouri Western State to replace Chris Ball, who accepted a post at Idaho State. Since last August, Hannaford has been defensive coordinator and head sophomore football coach at Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) High School.

Women's ice hockey--Salve Regina appointed Emilie Turcotte as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition during the 1999-2000 season. Turcotte most recently coached at Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where she established a girls' hockey program.

Men's lacrosse--Scott Rynne named as head coach at Susquehanna. The lacrosse program is slated to begin varsity-level play after a competing on the club level in the spring. Since 1995, Rynne, who also will be an assistant football coach, has been head lacrosse club coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Pomona-Pitzer.

Men's and women's skiing--MIT hired William Holland as head men's and women's nordic coach. Most recently Holland has served as head cross country skiing coach at Middlesex (Massachusetts) School.

Women's soccer--Clarkson promoted three-year assistant Christine Scuderi to head coach to succeed Al Gotsch, head coach since 1985.

Men's and women's volleyball--Nikki Rhinesmith resigned as head coach at Redlands. Rhinesmith has been full-time head coach since 1997 ... Jessica Anderson resigned as women's head coach at Niagara ... California added Rich Feller as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants--Missouri Western State graduate assistant Christine Donecker resigned to become head coach at Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College. The school promoted student assistant Monica Peck to graduate assistant and selected Sherri Lang as student assistant.

STAFF

Academic services--Danielle Payne appointed as assistant academic counselor in the athletics department at Kent. Payne has served as a graduate assistant academic advisor at the school for the past year and a half.

Development--Rhode Island chose Robert Turcotte as director, Convocation Center campaign and major gifts officer. Turcotte was director of athletics development at Northeastern ... Michael Schnackenberg appointed as sports information director at Bloomfield.

Sports information assistants--Seton Hall appointed Jeff Andriesse as assistant sports information director ... Doug Monson hired as sports information director at American International, succeeding Chris Hermann. Monson has been media relations director at the New England Collegiate Conference and assistant sports information director at Franklin Pierce.

Ticket operations--Chris Colleary added as coordinator of ticket marketing at Seton Hall.

CONFERENCES

The Sun Belt Conference hired Wright Waters as commissioner to succeed Craig Thompson, who became commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. Waters, who was Southern Conference commissioner from 1991-98, has been general manager of the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide sports marketing for the past year.

Ann-Tyler Sangston named assistant commissioner for championships at the Colonial Athletic Association, effective January 1, 1999. Sangston was manager of communications and events at ACC Properties and replaces Nichole Manning, who accepted an assistant director of championships position with the NCAA national office.

The Mountain West Conference announced the selection of Bret A. Gilliland as associate commissioner. For the past 12 years, Gilliland, currently chair of the NCAA Honors Committee, has been with the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

The Northeast-10 Conference appointed Julie Smalley as director of media relations.

Jeff Reynolds, Mid-Continent Conference assistant commissioner for media relations, resigned, effective January 12.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Women's Sports Foundation elected the following individuals as trustees and officers, effective January 1, 1999: Trustees--Michelle Andrews, Sharon Barbano, Philip Beekman, Mary Ellen Clark, Clark Griffith, Freda Lewis Hall, Doug McCormick, Donna Richardson and Maria Stefan. Officers--Nancy Lieberman-Cline, president; Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, past president; Sandy Vivas, newly elected secretary-treasurer; Lillian Greene-Chamberlain, vice-president at-large; Rusty Kanokogi, re-elected vice-president at-large; June McIvor, vice-president at-large; Sal Schiliro, newly elected vice-president at-large; Don Sabo, re-elected vice-president at-large; Gary Wadler, vice-president at-large.

The SportsTicker appointed Joseph M. Gordian as director of sales and marketing. Gordian has recently worked at Frito-Lay, Inc. and Bank of America. SportsTicker is an instant sports news and information service of ESPN.


NOTABLES

Bill Snyder, head football coach at Kansas State, named the Walter Camp/Street & Smith's 1998 Coach of the Year. Synder, who led his squad to an 11-2 record and a berth in the Alamo Bowl, has been head coach for 10 years ... Cathy Andruzzi selected as executive director of the Philadelphia Women's Basketball 2000. She will be responsible for coordinating the planning efforts for hosting the NCAA 2000 Women's Final Four, scheduled for March 31 and April 2, 2000. During the 1997-98 season, Andruzzi served as general manager for the Philadelphia Rage of the American Basketball League ... Senior Michigan cross country runner Katie McGregor and senior Old Dominion field hockey player Mimi Smith chosen as Honda Award winners in recognition of being the top women in their respective sports for 1998-99. McGregor, a first team all-America selection, won the individual title at the NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships and is the only runner in school history to earn Big Ten Conference titles for two straight years. Smith helped lead Old Dominion to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship with 20 goals and six assists this season. A first-team all-America selection, Smith also was named Colonial Conference defensive player of the year ... Darren Powell, head men's soccer coach at Greensboro, named 1998 National Soccer Coaches Association of America coach of the year for the South region. Powell led the squad to the Dixie Conference title this season and an appearance in the Division III national championship game ... Mike Burton, junior quarterback at Trinity (Texas), selected as recipient of the 1998 Melberger Award as the NCAA Division III player of the year. The honor is presented by the Downtown Wilkes-Barre Touchdown Club. Named the 1998 Southern College Athletic Conference offensive player of the year, Burton completed 302 passes for 4,124 yards and 39 touchdowns this season.

Deaths

Former Delaware football and baseball player Hugh Bogovich died of pancreatic cancer. Bogovich was Delaware's first first-team Associated Press all-American in 1942 as a football offensive guard, and he tossed one of five no-hitters in school history as a pitcher on the baseball team.

Steve Waxman, a former Canisius basketball player, died December 10 at the age of 48. Waxman competed at the school during the 1971-72 season.
