Six administrators named as 1999-2000 class of NCAA fellows

Six female and ethnic-minority athletics administrators from NCAA member conferences and institutions have been selection as participants in the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program.

The 1999-2000 fellows class includes Jacqueline Campbell, assistant commissioner for compliance, Atlantic 10 Conference; Sean T. Frazier, assistant athletics director for diversity and student/staff welfare, University of Maine, Orono; Floyd Kerr, assistant director of athletics, Youngstown State University; Dell D. Robinson, assistant commissioner for compliance services, Western Athletic Conference; Alecia Shields-Gadson, head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach, Alcorn State University; and Kathleen Worthington, associate director of athletics/senior woman administrator, Morehead State University.

The mission of the program is to enhance employment and leadership opportunities for ethnic minorities and women at the senior management level of intercollegiate athletics administration.

Fellows will work toward achieving this mission through academic and practical work experiences that will enable them to develop their talents and abilities. Participants will be provided several networking and mentoring opportunities throughout the year and will complete their 18-month program in June 2000.

The fellows program was first proposed in 1994 by the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee and the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics and was endorsed by what was then the NCAA Presidents Commission and the NCAA Council. A pilot version of the program was developed in 1995, and a pilot group of fellows was accepted in 1996. Those fellows graduated at the 1998 NCAA Convention.

Each of the 1999 fellows will be assigned an executive mentor. The mentors' responsibilities will include interaction with the fellow to address problem areas, answer questions, provide support and ensure meaningful and practical experiences. The fellows also will interact with other top administrators as deemed necessary by the mentor.

Mentors for this fellows class are Patty Viverito, commissioner, Missouri Valley Conference; Dan Guerrero, director of athletics, University of California, Irvine; Charles Harris, commissioner, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; Chris Monasch, commissioner, America East Conference; Barbara Hedges, director of athletics, University of Washington; Jim Livengood, director of athletics, University of Arizona; and John McNamara, associate commissioner, Western Athletic Conference.

Selection of the fellows was made by the NCAA Fellows Leadership Review Committee. This five-member committee includes two members of the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (Charles Whitcomb, faculty athletics representative at San Jose State University, chair; and Paula Smith, assistant commissioner, Big West Conference); two members of the Committee on Women's Athletics (Cheryl L. Levick, senior associate director of athletics at Stanford University, chair; and Richard A. Rasmussen, executive officer, University Athletic Association); and Gerald L.
