Division III -- Management Council to look at championship issues

The Division III Management Council is expected to address several issues forwarded from the Division III Championships Committee, including recommendations regarding the revised automatic-qualification principles, when it meets October 19-20 in Indianapolis.

The Management Council also is expected to review recommendations from the Division III Financial Aid and Awards Committee regarding the review of awards of circumstance and nonathletics achievement awards. (See Championships Committee and Financial Aid and Awards Committee stories below.)

Additionally, the Management Council is expected to review all 22 Division III Legislative Proposals identified in the Second Publication of Proposed Legislation.

The Management Council also will review the recommendations of the Division III Convention-Planning Subcommittee.

For the first time, the tentative schedule of Convention events includes programs developed in conjunction with other organizations. The tentative schedule recommended by the subcommittee includes programming planned with the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators and the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association.

Other Convention programs tentatively scheduled include a Division III forum on sportsmanship and student-athlete issues, which also will include the role of student-athlete advisory committees on campus as well as issues related to alcohol, binge drinking and hazing.

Another proposed panel discussion will relate to nontraditional seasons and will include a history of changes in legislation and a review of Division III philosophy on the matter.

The Management Council also is expected to discuss better business practices for the Association, including possible cost-saving initiatives related to NCAA meeting practices that were introduced to the Management Council and Presidents Council in July as recommended by the Executive Committee. This discussion is expected to involve a consideration of meeting policies, practices and frequency.

The Management Council also will review recommendations from the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), including a recommendation that the Management Council sponsor legislation to permit a student-athlete to serve on the Division III Student-Athlete Reinstatement Subcommittee.

SAAC also has asked that the Management Council recommend a discussion take place at the 1999 Convention on the issue of campus student-advisory committees at Division III institutions.
