Northeastern appoints head rowing coach

Northeastern has named Joe Wilhelm head women's rowing coach. Wilhelm succeeds 10-year head coach Carie Graves, who became head women's rowing coach at Texas.

Wilhelm has served as assistant men's rowing coach at Northeastern for the past seven years. Before joining Northeastern in 1991, Wilhelm served four years as head coach of rowing at Columbia, where he oversaw both the men's and women's programs. Wilhelm initially joined Columbia in 1983, founding the women's program and serving as head coach for two seasons. He also served as an assistant to both the men's lightweight and heavyweight crews.

A 1982 graduate of Pennsylvania, Wilhelm was a four-year member of the school's rowing team and served as captain in 1982. He also is a three-time member of the Canadian National Team.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Illinois College named Bill Merris athletics director to replace Richard Johanningmeier. Merris is chairman of the school's athletics department and served as men's basketball coach for 38 seasons and football coach for 28 years ... Cornell associate athletics director and senior woman administrator M. Dianne Murphy resigned to become director of athletics and recreation at Denver. Murphy succeeds Joel Maturi, who resigned to accept the athletics director position at Miami (Ohio) ... Macalester selected Steve Hauser as acting athletics director, replacing Ken Andrews, who resigned. Hauser will continue to serve as head baseball coach at the school, a position he has held since July 1993 ... Gonzaga named Mike Roth as athletics director to replace Dan Fitzgerald, who resigned. Prior to his appointment as acting athletics director in December 1997, Roth was an assistant athletics director with the school ... Keith Mondillo selected as director of athletics at Gwynedd-Mercy. Mondillo is head women's basketball coach at the school and has been assistant athletics director and sports information director since 1996.

Ginger Fulton named associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Seton Hall. Fulton has been with Xavier for the past six years, including the last five as associate athletics director for administration and compliance and senior woman administrator ... Gwynedd-Mercy chose Joanne Stanton as associate athletics director. Stanton has been head field hockey coach at the school since 1996 ... Binghamton selected Matt Bassett as associate athletics director to succeed Sheryl Sousa. Bassett has been director of student-athlete services at Quinnipiac since 1991 ... Robert King promoted to senior associate athletics director/sports medicine and head team physician at Texas Tech ... Wellesley promoted Dana Harmon to associate athletics director for finance and budget and Suzanne Jones Walmsley to associate athletics director for personnel. Harmon has been assistant athletics director for events management at the school for the past five and a half years. Walmsley has been assistant athletics director for compliance and eligibility for six years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

David Swanson hired as assistant direc-tor of athletics for finance at Georgetown. Swanson has been director of auxiliary enterprises at George Mason for the past 11 years ... South Dakota chose Eric Schoh as assistant athletics director. Schoh most recently was midwest regional director for D. D. Marketing, Inc. in Pueblo, Colorado ... Mike Guastelle promoted to assistant athletics director for external affairs at Sacred Heart. Russell Warren promoted to assistant athletics director, ticket operations at Texas Tech. Warren has been director of athletics ticket operations ... SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) hired Erika Renwick as senior woman administrator/assistant athletics director. Renwick most recently worked in the Indiana (Pennsylvania) athletics department.

Baseball--Tom Winske hired as head coach at St. Norbert.

Baseball assistants--Macalester elevated Matt Parrington to associate head coach after two years as an assistant ... Cincinnati named Jeff Ditch and Dusty Lepper as assistants. Ditch has been an assistant baseball coach with Penn State for the past four years, and Lepper was an assistant baseball coach at Ohio last year ... Mitch Lebowitz and Spencer Graham added as assistant coaches at Pfeiffer ... Francis Marion announced Art Inabinet as assistant coach. Inabinet has been head coach at North Greenville (South Carolina) College for six seasons.

Men's basketball--Portland State promoted Joel Sobotka to head coach. Sobotka, an assistant at the school for the past two years, replaces Ritchie McKay, who became head coach at Colorado State ... Mike McCubbin selected as head coach at Colorado College, replacing Brett Zuver. McCubbin spent the 1997-98 season as assistant men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Rochester ... Gordon named Troy Justice head coach.

Men's basketball assistants--Pete Gaudet resigned as assistant coach at Vanderbilt ... Ken Carrillo selected as an assistant at Saint Joseph's (Indiana), succeeding Todd Foster, now an assistant men's basketball coach at Valparaiso. Carrillo has most recently been an assistant men's basketball coach at Lewis-Clark State ... Westminster (Pennsylvania) chose Kevin Siroki as part-time assistant. Last season Siroki was assistant varsity basketball coach at Hubbard (Ohio) High School ... Gordon added Michael Bishop as assistant coach. Women's basketball--Jim Ducey, assistant men's basketball coach at Redlands, chosen as head women's coach at the school. Ducey will retain duties as director and coach of men's and women's tennis at the school.

Women's basketball assistants--Bowling Green added Michelle Bohan and Suzy Venet as assistants. Bohan was an assistant at Mount Union in 1991-96 and 1997-98. A recent graduate of Mount Union, Venet was a Kodak/WBCA first-team all-American and was named Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year twice as a point guard for the women's basketball team ... Sara Chase hired as an assistant at Kent, succeeding Erica Floyd. Chase has been an assistant women's basketball coach at Auburn University-Montgomery for the past two seasons ... St. Mary's (Maryland) promoted David Layman to full-time assistant. The school also named Michelle Chelednik head assistant ... Lynn Ust selected as an assistant coach at Monmouth (New Jersey). Ust has been head coach at Drew for the past three seasons ... Redlands added Ariana Bates as graduate assistant coach and selected Linn Sroka as part-time assistant coach ... Men's and women's cross country--Gordon selected Steve Leonard as head men's coach and Victoria Bower as head women's coach ... Wesleyan (Connecticut) hired J. R. Gaige as head men's and women's coach, succeeding Elmer Swanson, who retired.

Women's cross country assistant--Rich Canole replaces Diana "DeDe" Sustarich as assistant cross country and track and field coach at Ferris State. Canole coached track and field on the high-school level from 1992-97, capturing six girls' track and field league titles and earning regional-coach-of-the-year distinction twice.

Men's and women's fencing--Sacred Heart appointed Thomas Ciccarone as its first men's and women's coach. Ciccarone serves as chair for the Connecticut Division of the United States Fencing Association.

Field hockey--Mount Holyoke hired Andrea Whitcomb as field hockey and softball coach. For the past two years, Whitcomb has been head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Montclair State ... Anne Prouty appointed head field hockey coach at American International. Prouty replaces head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach Nancy McShea, who resigned.

Field hockey assistants--Andrea Pelliccio chosen as an assistant at Ferrum. Pelliccio, a 1998 graduate of Appalachian State, will also assume responsibilities as assistant women's lacrosse coach ... Melissa Moore and Leslee Wagner chosen as assistants at St. Mary's (Maryland).

Football--Illinois College selected Tom Rowland as interim head coach, succeeding Richard Johanningmeier. Rowland has guided the school's wrestling and track teams since 1973, and served as an assistant football coach at the school from 1973-84 ... Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti signed a new four-year contract ... Larry Shank announced as head coach at Heidelberg.

Football assistants--Greensboro added Steve Bare as running backs coach, Pete Raeford as secondary coach, Jody Kafina as defensive coordinator and Mike Working as wide receivers coach ... Heidelberg added Kurt Smith as defensive coordinator, Brian Cochran as special teams coordinator and Travis Crabtree as equipment coordinator.

Men's and women's golf--Butler selected Ben Weaver as head men's coach, succeeding Don Benbow, who retired from coaching but will retain duties as associate athletics director at the school and will continue to oversee the men's and women's golf programs. Weaver has been assistant golf professional at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Indianapolis ... Marc Granahan hired as head men's coach at American ... Saint Louis named Ed Schwent head men's coach, succeeding Russ Brightman, who resigned ... Trinity (Texas) announced Carla Spenkoch as head men's and women's golf coach ... Quinnipiac promoted assistant coach David Giacondino to head men's coach.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Quinnipiac added Scott Robson, a 1998 graduate of the school, as an assistant.

Men's lacrosse assistants--Jason Caluder named assistant coach at Roanoke for the 1999 season. Caluder, a 1998 graduate of Limestone, was a Division II all-America honorable mention in lacrosse as a senior ... Rob Bray promoted to head assistant men's coach at St. Mary's (Maryland) ... Andrew Arcuri appointed assistant coach at Pfeiffer.

Women's lacrosse--Sacred Heart promoted assistant Tara Fisher to head coach, replacing Elizabeth Patterson.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Pfeiffer selected Gregg Gebhard as assistant women's lacrosse coach. Gebhard also will serve as interim head coach.

Women's rowing--Gonzaga named Pattie Pinkerton head coach. Pinkerton most recently worked at the West Australia Institute of Sport.

Men's and women's rowing assistants--Kate Tytus announced as an assistant women's coach at Gonzaga ... Todd Kennett chosen as head coach of lightweight rowing at Cornell. Kennett has been a rowing assistant with Cornell since 1993 and has served as freshman lightweight coach at the school since 1994 ... Bill Manning named head men's freshman heavyweight coach at Harvard ... Vicky Carmody added as women's novice coach and Erich Shuler selected to coach the varsity men's rowing at George Washington.

Men's soccer assistants--Ferrum appointed Kamiar Momeni as an assistant. Momeni has been an assistant women's coach at Mary Washington and head women's coach at Chancellor (Virginia) High School ... St. Mary's (Maryland) added Herb Gainey and Alex Czopp as assistants ... Brian Graves chosen as assistant coach at American International.

Women's soccer--Heather Kerby-Nelson reinstated as head coach at Florida State ... Heidelberg hired John Hall as coach, succeeding Des Lawless.

Women's soccer assistants--Alan Green selected as an assistant at Ferrum. Green has been a graduate women's assistant at North Alabama, Mankato State and Frostburg State ... Dawn Straw announced as assistant coach at Harvard ... American International selected Mike Butler as assistant coach.

Softball--Vanessa MacCallum chosen as head coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Monmouth (Illinois). MacCallum, who succeeds Mia Smith, has been an assistant softball coach at Beloit since February 1995 ... Angel Brown added as head coach at Heidelberg ... David Salvatore promoted to head coach at New Jersey City. Salvatore served as interim head coach during the 1998 season ... Otterbein chose Deborah Quackenbush as head coach. Quackenbush was head softball coach and head athletic trainer at MacMurray for one year.

Softball assistants--Akron named Shannon Salsburg graduate assistant coach ... Michigan announced the addition of Jennifer L. Brundage to the staff ... Michelle Sorci hired as an assistant at Syracuse ... Missouri named Mindy Johnson assistant coach, succeeding Terry Schweikert.

Men's and women's squash--Scott Stoneburgh named head men's coach and Orla Doherty named head women's coach at Cornell.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Bill Saxton named coach at St. Benedict and St. John's (Minnesota). Saxton, who has been assistant head men's and women's and recruiting coordinator at UNLV since 1992, replaces St. Benedict's Mike Ritchie and Pat Haws of St. John's ... Colorado College promoted assistant coach Brian Pearson to interim head men's and women's swimming coach for the 1998-99 season. Pearson succeeds Andrea Aspengren ... Jim Josberger named men's and women's head swimming coach at Gordon ... Mount Holyoke hired David Allen as swimming coach. Allen most recently worked as an assistant swimming coach at Rochester ... Men's and women's swimming assistants--Mary Margaret Dempsey named assistant men's and women's coach at Illinois-Chicago ... Penn State selected Mike Davidson as assistant men's coach. Davidson replaces Bill Dorenkott, who assumed head coaching duties with the women's squad at the school.

Men's and women's tennis--Ferrum hired Gary Holden as head coach. Holden also accepted the position of sports information director, a position he held at the school from 1992-97 ... Gordon selected Bill "Whitey" Davis as men's and women's head coach ... St. Norbert head women's coach Sara Schubring accepted additional duties as head men's tennis coach ... Millsaps selected Gregg Tripp as men's and women's coach. Tripp has been the club professional at Tennis Center South in Jackson, Mississippi ... Pat Ortner appointed head women's coach at Heidelberg ... Penn State-Behrend announced Jeff Barger as head women's coach ... Geoff Roche promoted to full-time men's and women's coach at Redlands.

Women's tennis--Charles Mosley chosen as head coach at Nicholls State. Mosley worked as an assistant at Case Western Reserve in 1996.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Anatoli Welihozkiy named assistant track and field coach at Georgetown.

Women's volleyball--Kari Bailey Shimmin appointed interim head coach at Monmouth (Illinois), succeeding Mia Smith.

Women's volleyball assistant--St. Mary's (Maryland) selected Corinne Marino as head assistant.

Wrestling--Peter B. Schuyler added as head coach at Franklin & Marshall, succeeding Fran Presley ... Wesleyan (Connecticut) selected Drew Black as head wrestling and strength and fitness coach. Black replaces Mike Cunningham, who served as interim head coach in 1997-98.

Wrestling assistant--Longwood added Jason Clark as a part-time assistant. Most recently, Clark has been an assistant coach at Hunters Creek (North Carolina) Middle School.

STAFF

Athletic trainers--Ferrum appointed Michael Kotelnicki head athletic trainer. Kotelnicki has been an athletic trainer at Healthsouth in Johnstown, Pennsylvania ... Charles Goodwin appointed head athletic trainer at Otterbein. Since 1993, Goodwin has been head athletic trainer at Muskingum.

Assistant athletic trainers--Seth Crawford added as assistant athletic trainer at Ferrum. Crawford was an exercise physiologist/physical therapist technician at Lucas Physical Therapies in Roanoke, Virginia ... Holy Cross hired Allison Ellia as assistant athletic trainer ... Delaware announced Jennifer Grunzweig as assistant athletic trainer, replacing Darryl Conway ... John Shearer appointed assistant athletic trainer at Pepperdine, succeeding Clay Jamieson.

Assistant equipment manager--Ferris selected John Whitford as assistant equipment manager. Whitford was a volunteer assistant basketball coach and head equipment manager at William Henry Harrison (Indiana) High School.

Business manager--Tom Wantuck chosen as athletics business manager at Wesleyan (Connecticut) ... Texas-San Antonio hired Scott Street as athletics business officer. Street was athletics business manager and compliance coordinator at Missouri-Rolla.

Compliance--Canisius chose Jennifer Zeh as compliance coordinator, succeeding Bill Maher, who resigned. Zeh served as a graduate assistant in the school's compliance office during the summer and worked in the school's sports information office during the 1997-98 season ... Katherine Ahrens, Northern Illinois' compliance coordinator for three years, appointed assistant compliance coordinator at Wisconsin.

Corporate sales--Alison Murphy named director of corporate sales at Albany. For the past four years, Murphy has been group sales/event manager at Pepsi Arena.

Equipment manager--Albany announced Jerry Zalmanek as equipment manager.

Fund raising--Paul Huegel succeeds Richard J. Regan as executive director of Seton Hall's Pirate Blue Athletic Fund.

Promotions--Cori Rowe selected as promotions and ticket manager at Albany. Rowe was assistant women's basketball coach at North Carolina-Wilmington for two years.

Sports information--Gordon named Jeannine Cavallaro sports information director ... Mount Holyoke hired Russell Powell as director of sports information and indoor track coach ... Rensselaer named Kevin Beattie sports information director. Beattie has been with the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League for four years, including the last three as director of communications ... Heidelberg named Toby Boyce as associate director of college relations/sports information, succeeding Dick Edmond ... Steven L. Wideen chosen as sports information director at Kalamazoo. Wideen has been an assistant sports information director at Cornerstone College for the past three years.

Strength and conditioning--Belmont added Gary Kinder as strength and conditioning coach. Kinder, who replaces Jeff McGinnis, also will be an assistant coach with the track and cross country squads.

Ticket manager--Georgetown selected Kim Frank as athletics ticket manager. Frank most recently was manager of special projects for the Georgetown sports promotions office.

CONFERENCES

The Trans America Athletic Conference hired Michelle Jinks as assistant director of media relations. Jinks has been a sports information assistant at Florida A&M for the past seven years.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Rebecca Wempe resigned as director of NCAA infractions committees to accept a position as attorney with Security Benefit Group of Companies of Topeka, Kansas ... David Knopp, director of membership services since 1989, named director of corporate marketing ... Kevin Pearson hired as an enforcement representative.

CORRECTIONS

Two errors were discovered in the 1999 NCAA track and field qualifying standards, which appeared in the September 14 issue of The NCAA News. For Division III women, the pole vault is not contested. Standards were erroneously included in indoor and outdoor. For the Division I men's and women's indoor championships, qualifying marks can be attained on tracks that are "Banked or Over 200m/200 yds." The qualifying standards erroneously stated "Banked and Over 200m/200 yds."

NOTABLES

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced John Brownfield, Tim Gleason, George Morris and Bill O'Brien as chapter leadership award winners for 1998 as designated by the foundation's four regions. Brownfield, Western region, coached Loyola (California) to national championships in 1969 and 1971, and served as an assistant coach on the 1972 national championship squad at Southern California. Brownfield also coached on the high-school level for more than 40 years, capturing 50 league championships in five sports: football, track, cross country, basketball and tennis. Gleason, Midwest region, has been commissioner of the Ohio Athletic Conference since 1991 and serves as treasurer for the NCAA Division III Athletics Administrators Association. George Morris, Southern region, played collegiate football at Georgia Tech where he earned all-conference and all-America honors as a linebacker. Morris went on to serve as a college football official, including 30 years as a head linesman in the Southeastern Conference. O'Brien, Eastern region, currently works in the banking industry, is a past president of the Walter Camp Football Foundation and is noted for his extensive community service work.

The following 13 senior quarterbacks were selected as candidates for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually by the Frank Camp Chapter of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation to the top senior collegiate quarterback in the nation: Michael Bishop, Kansas State; Daunte Culpepper, Central Florida; Oscar Davenport, North Carolina; Joe Germaine, Ohio State; Brock Huard, Washington; Corby Jones, Missouri; Shawn King, Tulane; Brian Kuklick, Wake Forest; Graham Leigh, New Mexico; Donovan McNabb, Syracuse; Cade McNown, UCLA; Brandon Stewart, Texas A&M; and Herb Taylor, LSU.


DEATHS

Junius Kellogg, whose report of an attempted bribe revealed a major college basketball scandal in the 1950s, died of respiratory failure September 16. He was 71. Kellogg, the first black player at Manhattan, was asked to shave points by Henry Poppe, the previous year's team captain. Kellogg reported the incident to head coach Ken Norton, who reported it to the authorities. Seven players from City College's 1950 NCAA-NIT double champions were arrested on bribery charges. Kellogg went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters in 1953 until a 1954 car accident left him paralyzed. He spent the rest of his life serving at various agencies in New York, coaching wheelchair athletes and giving motivational talks.

Larry Panciera, baseball coach at Connecticut for almost two decades, died September 8 after a long illness. He was 76. Panciera, who coached at Connecticut from 1962-79, built a 297-160-5 mark in route to being named NCAA New England Coach of the Year six times.

Elizabeth City State sports information director Milton Kirt Campbell died September 15 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Campbell had been sports information director at the school since August 1994.
