Chicago seminar targets gambling

The NCAA will join with the Chicago Crime Commission, DePaul University and the Illinois Attorney General's Office to host a one-day educational conference on the issue of campus sports gambling September 30 in Chicago.

The conference, to be held at the James R. Thompson-State of Illinois Center, will bring together experts from law enforcement, gambling and intercollegiate athletics to discuss the impact of sports gambling in an attempt to better prepare those individuals on college campuses who are in positions to help prevent what has become a prominent concern in college athletics.

The conference, which is free of charge, is open to athletics administrators, coaches, compliance officers, faculty athletics representatives, sports information directors, athletic trainers and others who may have an impact on campus efforts to control sports gambling.

The program will feature presentations from NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey and William S. Saum, NCAA agent and gambling representative, as well as representatives from the FBI and the Chicago Crime Commission. Also present will be prosecutors involved in the gambling cases at Northwestern University and Arizona State University.

Those persons interested in attending the conference must pre-register by September 18. Reservations may be arranged by calling Mary Hie (773/325-7504) or by writing to Hie at DePaul University, 1011 West Belden Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60614.

Media representatives are asked to make their arrangements through John Lanctot, DePaul's sports information director, at 773/325-7525.
