Number of members now at 1,251

Active membership expands to 964

Total NCAA membership has grown to an all-time high of 1,251 active, provisional, conference, affiliated and corresponding members.

A total of 33 provisional members moved to active status effective September 1. Also, 49 new provisional members joined the Association at that time.

The increase represents a 3.5 percent growth -- from 933 to 964 -- in active-member colleges and universities. The total membership growth was 4.3 percent (from 1,200 to 1,251). There also were increases in the number of provisional members, conferences and affiliated organizations.

Division I membership grew by four from 306 to 310, including one provisional member--the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff--moving to active status. Division II increased from 254 colleges and universities to 267, and Division III grew from 373 to 387.

The only decrease in any of the membership categories was in corresponding members.

A three-year application process for provisional members was adopted at the 1994 NCAA Convention. The provisional period was extended to four years, effective August 1, 1997. The first two years are considered educational or orientation years in which the member receives all NCAA forms, publications, mailings and general information from the national office regarding the activities of the Association.

Provisional members are expected to be in full compliance with the Association's legislation during the third and fourth years. They also are required to administer their athletics programs under the rules of their preferred divisions.

Also during the second, third and fourth years, the members may be counted for the purpose of meeting scheduling requirements as an NCAA opponent in the division in which they are seeking active membership. However, no waiver opportunities are available other than those related to circumstances beyond the school's control.

Eighteen provisional colleges and universities became active members in Division II, effective September 1: Brigham Young University, Hawaii; Central Washington University; Christian Brothers University; East Central University; Hawaii Pacific University; University of the Incarnate Word; Northeastern State University; Rockhurst College; Southeastern Oklahoma State University; Southwestern Oklahoma State University; St. Edward's University; St. Martin's College; St. Mary's University (Texas); Texas Lutheran University; Texas Wesleyan University; Tusculum College; Western Washington University; and Westminster University (Pennsylvania).

Division II has three more provisional members slated for active status September 1, 1999, and another that will become an active member September 1, 2000.
