Iowa State selects Eustachy as head coach

Iowa State has named Larry Eustachy head men's basketball coach, succeeding Tim Floyd. Floyd resigned to become director of basketball operations for the National Basketball Association's Chicago Bulls.

Eustachy has spent the last five seasons as head coach at Utah State. In route to a 98-53 record at the school, Eustachy earned Big West Conference coach-of-the-year honors. He also led Utah State to the conference championship slot in 1995 for the first time in 15 years. Prior to his tenure at Utah State, Eustachy led the program at Idaho from 1990 to 1993. He also has served as an assistant coach at Ball State, Utah, Idaho, Mississippi State and Citrus (California) Junior College.

Collegiately, Eustachy played basketball at Citrus Junior College for two seasons before transferring to Long Beach State where he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education. He also holds a teaching certificate from Azusa Pacific.

AGREEMENTS

The Collegiate Licensing Company announced it will exclusively represent all nine campuses of the University of Texas system. Collegiate Licensing Company, a full-service licensing representative, is the oldest and largest licensing representative in the nation whose memberships include the NCAA and more than 160 colleges, universities, bowl games and athletics conferences.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has reached an agreement with the Division II Athletics Directors Association to serve as administrator of the association. This is the fifth association NACDA administers. Among the others is the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD), which elected Carol Oakland, director of athletics development at Augustana (South Dakota), as president for 1998-99.

CONFERENCES

The Northeast Conference selected Ronald Ratner as assistant director for communications and championships.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference named Lonza Hardy associate commissioner, LaRita Greer assistant commissioner for championships, Harold Clark assistant commissioner for administration, Patrick Carter assistant commissioner for compliance and Smita Parikh assistant commissioner for finance.

Jon Martin announced as director of media relations at the North Central Conference.

Conference USA hired Matt Lloyd as assistant director of information services. For the past year, Lloyd has been direc-tor of media services for the Arena Foot-ball League.

Eric Goodwin and Gail Wilkins added as communications assistants for the Big East Conference.

America East assistant director of communications Mike Hirschman resigned to become director of public relations for the Asheville (North Carolina) professional hockey team of the United Hockey League.

Eric Harmon chosen as supervisor of men's basketball officials for the Mid-American Conference. Harmon has officiated NCAA Division I men's basketball for 32 years and has supervised basketball referees in the Mid-Continent Conference since 1990 and the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference since 1989.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) named Lee McElroy, director of athletics at American, to chair the Sears Directors' Cup Committee. He replaces Elaine Dreidame, senior associate director of athletics at Dayton. NACDA also named Jude Killy as an administrative assistant. Killy had been an intern with the association in 1996-97.

The NCAA Division II College Commissioners Association announced the following officers for the 1998-99 year: Don Landry, Sunshine State Conference, president; Tom Brown, Great Lakes Athletic Conference, vice-president; Kurt Patberg, Northern Sun Conference, secretary-treasurer.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jane Jankowski selected as public information coordinator II. Jankowski most recently served as public affairs officer for Allied Signal.

Shane Lyons, senior membership services representative and coordinator of interpretations, appointed associate athletics director for compliance at Texas Tech, succeeding Bob Burton, who resigned. Lyons has been with the Association since 1989.

The Big South chose Holly Deem, Liberty, and Corey Reed, Radford, as winners of the Christenberry Award presented to a male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average who graduated from a member institution. Deem, a nursing major, was Liberty's first track GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Reed, a chemistry major, garnered 1998 first team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors as a basketball player.

Brad Wilkerson named 1998 Rotary Smith Award winner. Wilkerson, a pitcher and outfielder at Florida, is the school's career leader in batting average, runs, home runs and RBIs.

CORRECTIONS

Eugene McCabe's position at Washington and Lee was listed incorrectly in the August 3 issue of The NCAA News. He is assistant men's lacrosse coach and also will serve as assistant football coach.


DEATHS

John Devlin, assistant football coach at Bloomsburg, died July 15 after suffering a heart attack. He was 61. A 1959 graduate of West Chester, Devlin was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 1984. Devlin had begun his sixth year with Bloomsburg and had also served as defensive coordinator at Tulane, assistant coach/linebackers coach at Temple and defensive coordinator at Kentucky and Maryland.

Missouri's defensive line coach, Curtis Jones, died July 26 after suffering a heart attack. He was 55. Jones played collegiate football at Missouri in 1966 and 1967 before competing in the National Football League for three seasons as a defensive lineman and linebacker with the San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers.
