Baseball panel chooses future site

To ring in the next millennium, the Division III Baseball Committee will recommend that the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, serve as the host for the 2000, 2001 and 2002 championships.

The recommendation will have to be approved by the Division III Championships Committee.

At its July 21-24 meeting in Port Townsend, Washington, the committee voted to move the championship finals site based on a commitment from Wisconsin-Oshkosh to ensure a special and memorable championship experience for the student-athletes. The committee agreed that the potential for larger crowds; comparable or better facilities; and improved and enhanced media coverage all factored in the decision.

The championship finals would be played at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin.

If approved, 1999 will be the fifth and final year that the city of Salem, Virginia, and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference will host the championship.

In other actions, the committee voted to recommend the following regional berths for the 1999 championship: West--4; Midwest--5; Mid-Atlantic--6; New England--6; South--4; Mideast--5; Central--5; and New York--5.

The committee also voted to recommend Randy Town, head baseball coach at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges, as the chair of the committee through 1999.
