NCAA News to launch new online advertising system

A new way for customers to place NCAA News classified ads will become effective the week of August 18.

Customers will be able to place their ads directly online at a rate of 75 cents per word for one week of exposure. Advertising may be purchased in one-week increments.

Those who wish to advertise in the printed version of the News may continue to do so at the existing rate of 75 cents per word. However, print advertising no longer will be posted on the Internet at no additional charge.

"Both advertisers and those who use our advertising have requested a way in which our online site can be more dynamic," said David Pickle, News editor-in-chief. "This will enable advertisers to post job vacancies as they occur and will permit those who are seeking positions to have the most current information available."

Those interested in posting an ad can access the appropriate template through NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org). Requested information will include a name, institution or firm, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address.

Advertisers must provide either a purchase order number or a valid credit card number.

The program will calculate the price of the ad, which the user will confirm before submitting the copy. Ads will be reviewed by the staff and posted online the next day. Billing will be done through e-mail.

Non-member customers will be required to pay in advance or through the use of a credit card.

Because the change is so significant, the service will be provided free of charge for the first month. Beginning September 14, ads posted online will be billed.

The change in advertising is part of an effort to give the Internet a greater role in delivery of NCAA information.

Beginning in September, the News will post information as it is available on the News site. That will differ from the current policy, which is to replicate the printed version of the News online after it is published.

The printed frequency will change from the current 46 issues a year (weekly, except for summer and Christmas) to 26 issues (every other week).

Those who use print classified advertising will want to note the frequency change so they can be certain that the information in the ad is current. A schedule of approaching publication dates and deadlines will continue to be published at the front of the classified section.
