NCAA chooses Price to head enforcement

David Price, associate commissioner for the Pacific-10 Conference, has been selected to head the NCAA enforcement and student-athlete reinstatement staff.

Price, who has been a member of the Pac-10 staff for 24 years, was named by NCAA President Cedric W. Dempsey to replace David Berst as group executive director for the Association's enforcement staff.

As associate commissioner since 1981, Price has been responsible for the conference's compliance and enforcement program.

"I am excited about joining the NCAA staff and the opportunity to lead the enforcement program," Price said. "I have a tough act to follow in David Berst, but I look forward to the challenge."

Berst, who had headed the NCAA enforcement staff since 1988, was named Division I chief of staff earlier this month.

Price will assume his new duties August 31.

"We are fortunate to have someone of David Price's experience and ability to step into this important position on the NCAA staff," Dempsey said. "He has gained the respect of athletics administrators not only in the Pacific-10 Conference, but throughout the membership."

Price spent seven years with the conference from 1972 to 1979, serving first as public relations director and then as assistant executive director. After a two-year stint as commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference, Price rejoined the conference staff in 1981.

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Price also worked on the NCAA staff as a publications editor from 1964 to 1966. He was named assistant sports information director at Oklahoma in 1966, and then joined the Western Athletic Conference staff in 1967 as public relations director before joining the Pac-10 staff in 1972.

Price has served on a number of NCAA committees, including a current assignment on the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Commit-tee. He also was a member of the Association's Special Committee for Simplification and Deregulations of the NCAA Manual from 1986 to 1989.

A recognized expert on NCAA rules, Price also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Collegiate Commissioners Association.
