Clark to head women's basketball at Dayton

Dayton has named Jaci Clark head women's basketball coach.

Clark joins Dayton after a seven-year stint as head women's basketball coach at Bowling Green, where she built a 135-65 record. Clark's squads won two regular-season and two postseason Mid-American Conference championships in addition to earning two NCAA tournament berths and making one Women's National Invitational Tournament appearance. She also garnered MAC coach-of-the-year honors in 1993-94 and 1997-98. Before assuming head coaching responsibilities at Bowling Green, Clark was an assistant at the school for five years. She also has been an assistant at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Indiana.

Clark played basketball at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she is the school's all-time career leader in scoring and rebounds. She also was the first student-athlete in school history to have his or her number retired.

Clark earned a B.S. in education from Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1984. She also holds a master's degree in physical education from Indiana.

Sam McClanahan stepped down as faculty athletics representative at Northern Arizona after 18 years. Wayne Sjoberg, professor of psychology, assumed the post June 1.

William Goldring hired as director of athletics at Ashland. For the past three years he has served in the same capacity at Morningside ... High Point chose Woody Gibson as athletics director, replacing Jerry Steele, who will continue as head men's basketball coach at the school ... Gregory K. P. Smith named athletics director at Cheyney ... Virginia State selected Edward Cooper, director of institutional research, as interim director of athletics. Cooper succeeds Alfreeda Goff, who resigned ... Ira Zeff hired as director of athletics at Nebraska Wesleyan, replacing Mary Beth Kennedy. Zeff was athletics director at Blackburn for seven years ... Mary Beth Kennedy named athletics director at Findlay, succeeding Ron Niekamp, who resigned to focus on responsibilities as men's basketball coach. Kennedy has been athletics director and head women's basketball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan for the past seven years ... North Carolina-Pembroke appointed Dan Kenney director of athletics, effective August 3. Kenney has been head men's basketball coach at Winthrop for six years ... San Francisco's Michael J. Brandeis associate athletics director Barbara Bickford resigned to accept a position as assistant professor in the department of physical education, exercise and sport science at North Carolina ... John Rees hired as associate athletics director for athletics advancement at Kent. Rees has been a consultant with Young and Associates in Kent, Ohio, for the past five years ... Southern Methodist chose George McMillion as associate athletics director for programs. The school also promoted Cash Birdwell, head athletic trainer for 27 years, to associate athletics director for program and support services and selected Ed Wisneski as associate athletics director for student services and broadcasting ... Northern Iowa promoted Julie Bright to associate director of athletics/business and licensing and appointed Kevin Buisman associate athletics director ... Wright State associate athletics director Peggy Wynkoop announced plans to retire. Wynkoop has been with the athletics department since 1973 ... Roger Demment hired as associate director of athletics for physical education, fitness and recreation at Dartmouth ... Georgia selected Dick Bestwick as senior associate athletics director and Damon Evans as associate athletics director for internal affairs ... Johns Hopkins assistant director of athletics and head men's lacrosse coach Tony Seaman stepped down but will remain with the school for one more year as an athletics consultant to the dean of student affairs ... Jim Senter chosen as assistant athletics director for development and Pete Isakson appointed assistant athletics director for marketing at Idaho. Senter succeeds Mike Marlow. Isakson was the athletics sales coordinator at Northern Iowa ... Kennesaw State promoted head baseball coach Mike Sansing to assistant athletics director for external affairs and head softball coach Scott Whitlock to assistant athletics director for internal affairs. Both Sansing and Whitlock will retain coaching duties ... Russell B. Rogers named assistant athletics director and sports information director at Stevens Tech. Rogers has been with the school since 1995 and will retain his duties as varsity tennis coach.

Basketball--Joe Meade, head men's coach at Lehman, resigned ... Idaho head coach David Farrar awarded a five-year contract. Farrar also served as head men's coach at the school last season ... Ramapo hired Chuck J. McBreen as head coach. McBreen was an assistant coach at Western Carolina last season ... Ray Martin, an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) for the last two seasons, named head coach at Long Island-Brooklyn ... Montclair State selected Ted Fiore as head coach.

Men's basketball assistants--Dave Williams appointed assistant coach at Wisconsin-Parkside. Williams has been an assistant at North Dakota State for five years ... Cal State Sacramento added Preston Ivory as an assistant coach. Ivory most recently served as an assistant coach at Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas ... Kevin Cox chosen as men's basketball administrative assistant at Villanova ... La Salle hired Jim Phillips as a restricted assistant coach. Women's basketball assistants--Karen Deden Westwater hired at Oregon State. Westwater most recently played with the New England Blizzard of the American Basketball League. Angie Polk selected as an assistant at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Pittsburg State appointed Corey Williams as an assistant coach. Men's and women's cross country--Robert Morris' Bill Hodge resigned as men's and women's cross country and track coach ... Richard MacKenzie selected as head men's cross country and track and field coach at Rochester ... Allegheny named Bill Ross head men's cross country coach ... Paul Danger hired as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at South Dakota State. Danger has been an assistant at Kansas for the past two seasons.

Field hockey--Jenn Harpel appointed head coach at La Salle. Harpel, who also will be the head women's lacrosse coach, has been an assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Bloomsburg.

Football assistants--Central Arkansas chose Mark Hudspeth as defensive secondary coach, replacing Scott Schwartz. Hudspeth has been head football coach at Winston Academy in Louisville, Mississippi, for the last two seasons ... Anderson added Chad Montgomery as defensive backs coach. Jacob Crowe and Chris Gilbert selected as assistant coaches ... Massachusetts-Lowell named Mark Sullivan, Mike Dawson and Pat Haverty assistant coaches. Sullivan most recently spent two seasons as head coach at Amesbury (Massachusetts) High School. Dawson is a 1997 graduate of Massachusetts, where he played for three seasons. Haverty has been defensive coordinator at Fitchburg State for the past two seasons ... Arkansas State appointed Greg Studrawa offensive tackles and tight ends coach ... Assumption named Pat White associate head coach, defensive coordinator and secondary coach, and chose Joe Fails as linebackers and strength and conditioning coach. The school also selected Ross Becker as defensive line coach, Erik Liljegren wide receivers coach, Jeff Creamer running backs coach and Bob Lord offensive line coach ... Reggie Bolton accepted the defensive coordinator post at Humboldt State ... Saint Anselm chose Andrew S. Maginnis as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. Maginnis has been an assistant coach at Villanova for four years.

Men's golf--Bowling Green named Garry Winger assistant golf course director and head men's golf coach. Winger succeeds Kurt Thomas, who became head women's golf coach at the school after heading both the men's and women's squads last season.

Gymnastics assistant--J. J. Tolhurst selected as assistant gymnastics coach at Bowling Green. Since August 1997, Tolhurst, who takes over for interim assistant coach Kim Miller, has been a gymnastics instructor in Liverpool, New York.

Women's ice hockey--Bemidji State hired Ruthann Cantile as head women's ice hockey coach. Cantile currently is a member of the board of directors for the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association.

Men's lacrosse--Tony Seaman accepted the position of head men's lacrosse coach at Towson.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Mercyhurst hired Chris Ryan as an assistant coach. Ryan was an assistant lacrosse coach at Monroe (New York) Community College last year.

Men's and women's crew/rowing--Joseph Bilyea appointed head coach of men's and women's rowing at Hamilton. Men's and women's rowing is slated for varsity status during the 1998-99 academic year. From 1996 to 1998, Bilyea served as heavyweight men's rowing coach at the University of Western Ontario.

Men's and women's soccer--High Point announced Peter Broadley as head men's soccer coach, succeeding Woody Gibson, who was promoted to athletics director at the school ... Dawson Driscoll named head men's and women's soccer coach at Missouri-Rolla. Driscoll, who replaces Mark Salisbury, most recently was an assistant coach at Ithaca .... Middlebury selected Diane Boettcher as head women's soccer coach. Boettcher, who also will serve as head women's softball coach at the school, is currently a member of the California Youth Soccer Association coaching staff and serves as technical and coaching director for the 49er United Soccer Club.

Men's and women's soccer assistants--High Point selected Jeff Gephart as assistant men's soccer coach ... Anderson added Brad Crumbacher as assistant men's soccer coach ... David Bucciero named goalkeeper coach at Texas Tech. Bucciero has been an assistant men's soccer coach at Washington (Maryland) since 1996 ... Anderson hired Stephanie Dudgeon as an assistant women's coach ... Iowa announced Kristine Zeits as women's assistant coach.

Softball--Chris Stainer appointed head coach at Wisconsin-Stout. Stainer served as interim coach at Wisconsin-River Falls last season ... Columbia chose Christine Vogt as head coach ... Candi Letts hired as head coach at Mississippi ... Alabama head coach Kalum Haack resigned ... Kipp Keenan selected as head coach at Tusculum. Keenan was interim head coach at the school last season ... Louisville hired Sandy Pearsall as head coach. The school is scheduled to begin competition in spring 2000. Pearsall has been head coach at Miami (Ohio) for the past six years.

Softball assistants--Tusculum named Cynthia Newton graduate assistant coach and Renee Rhinehart as student assistant coach ... Maria Schell appointed assistant coach at Iowa.

Men's and women's swimming--Ray Looze accepted the position of women's swimming coach at Pacific (California) ... Plattsburgh State head men's and women's swimming coach Shawn Farrell resigned to accept a position at a local YMCA.

Men's and women's tennis--Tim Pleasant chosen as men's and women's ten-nis coach at Austin Peay ... Kenny Thorne, an assistant coach at Georgia Tech, promoted to director of tennis and head tennis coach. Thorne succeeds Jean Desdunes ... Methodist hired Daniel Arnold as head women's coach and assistant director of the professional tennis management program. For the past two years, Arnold has been a graduate assistant in teaching and research at Appalachian State ... Kim Gidley accepted the position of head women's coach at Air Force. Gidley was an assistant women's tennis coach at Idaho last season ... Duquesne head women's coach Tom Fleming resigned.

Men's and women's tennis assistants--North Carolina selected Trey W. Phillips as assistant men's tennis coach. Phillips, who played professional tennis for three years, replaces Doug Prudian ... Christina Badea named as assistant women's coach at Mississippi State.

Women's volleyball assistant--Simpson selected Lana Smith as an assistant coach. Smith has been head coach at Indianola (Iowa) High School for nine years.

Wrestling--Syracuse appointed Scott Miller head coach. Miller has been head coach at Campbell for the past eight years.

STAFF

Annual giving--South Dakota State appointed Brian Loken annual giving officer. Loken has been a graduate assistant at the school for the past two years.

Business managers--South Dakota State hired Jeffrey Pritsker as business manager. Pritsker replaces Jay Parker, who resigned ... Wright State's Susan Gayle announced plans to retire as business manager. Gayle has been with the university since 1969 and has been business manager since 1982.

Compliance--Michael Redd named compliance director at Kennesaw State. Redd relinquished his head athletic trainer responsibilities.

Development--Sloane Rolloff selected as athletics development coordinator at Northern Iowa.

Equipment managers--Long Island-Brooklyn appointed Bill Gehrke equipment manager. He will retain his assistant softball coaching duties ... Ashland added Jerry Fife as head equipment coordinator ... Mike Bissaillon selected as equipment manager.

Equipment assistant--Carol Pierce appointed senior assistant equipment manager.

Graduate assistant--Heidi Roth hired as a graduate assistant in Syracuse's office of athletics communications for the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 school years.

Marketing/promotions--South Dakota State hired David Lichtenstein as marketing and promotions manager. Lichtenstein has been marketing coordinator at New Mexico State for the past year.

Marketing/promotions assistants--Georgia named Tim George assistant director of marketing/promotions and John Bateman associate director of marketing/promotion.

Media relations assistants--Maryland added Kevin Messenger as assistant media relations director and Jason Yellin as publications coordinator/assistant media relations director ... Pittsburgh appointed Mike Cawood assistant media relations director. Cawood was sports information director at Belmont for two years.

Officials coordinator -- Frank D. Cole, supervisor of officials at the Eastern College Athletic Conference, selected as NCAA national coordinator of ice hockey officials. Cole replaces Charles A. Holden, who resigned in May after 12 years as national coordinator.

Recruiting--Elzie Barnett accepted the position of coordinator of athletics recruiting at Southern Methodist.

Sports information--Western Carolina selected Craig Wells and Diana Koval to provide publicity for men's and women's sports, respectively, replacing Steve White. Wells has been assistant sports information director at Western Carolina for eight years. Koval was responsible for publicity of women's sports and maintenance of the athletics department's Web site at Elon last year ... Colin Barnacle appointed sports information director at Amherst ... Derick Hackett named interim women's sports information director at Iowa ... Brian Laubscher chosen as sports information director at Washington & Lee ... High Point added Holly Jurgensen as sports information director to succeed Mike Tuttle. Tuttle will continue as compliance coordinator and facilities manager at the school.

Sports information assistants--Ryan McCrary hired as an assistant sports information director at San Diego. McCrary, who was a sports information intern at Gonzaga for the past year, succeeds Mike Daniels ... Merchant Marine announced Steven Torres as assistant sports information director. Torres most recently served as sports information assistant at Hunter ... Georgia Tech named Douglas Barton assistant sports information director. Barton was sports information director at Bridgewater (Virginia) for the past three years.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Tom Melton added as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Southern. For the past two seasons, Melton has been head strength and conditioning coach at Wofford.

Ticket assistants--Frank Crumley accepted the position of assistant ticket manager for the athletics association at Georgia ... Illinois-Chicago appointed Jim Negratti and Monica Rausa associate ticket managers and Scott Miller named assistant ticket manager. Negratti has been assistant ticket manager at Illinois for 12 years and Rausa has been with Illinois-Chicago since 1992. Miller has interned in the office since last December.

Athletic trainer--Jeanne Olson accepted the position of head athletic trainer at Southern Methodist.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference selected Nancy E. Smith as assistant director of media relations.

John Wagner hired as director of conference information for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference. Wagner most recently worked in the sports department of The (Toledo) Blade newspaper.

The Mid-American Conference named Megan Lazor assistant commissioner for championships and officiating. Lazor was travel and game coordinator at Toledo for four years. The conference also promoted Cathy Machcinski to associate commissioner/senior woman administrator. Machcinski has worked at the conference since 1985.

The Peach Belt Athletic Conference selected the following officers for 1998-99: Lee A. Vickers, president at Francis Marion, president; Rosemary DePaulo, president at Georgia C&SU, president-elect; John C. Stockwell, chancellor at South Carolina-Spartanburg, vice-president; Marvin Vanover, conference commissioner. The conference also named John Guthrie men's basketball coordinator of officials, Charlie Bloodworth men's basketball supervisor of officials and Ray Johnstone as women's basketball coordinator and supervisor of officials.

Le Moyne will join the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in women's lacrosse in 1999.

ASSOCIATIONS

Sherilyn Fiveash hired as director of media and public relations for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. For the past three years, Fiveash has been sports information director for the women's athletics department at Iowa.

Former Kentucky football head coach Bill Curry appointed chief operating officer of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. The organization consists of more than 160 colleges and universities that agree to admit at no tuition former athletes who competed in revenue-generating sports for the schools. In exchange, athletes participate in outreach and community service programs. Curry, who most recently worked as an ESPN commentator, also coached at Alabama and Georgia Tech in addition to Kentucky.

CORRECTIONS

Barry University was incorrectly referred to as Barry College in the Division II notes section in the June 15 issue of The NCAA News.

A school at which Mike Jarvis previously coached was incorrectly reported in the Record section of the June 22 issue of The NCAA News. Jarvis coached at Boston University for five years.

The sport in which Mike Rappl collected his 400th career victory was incorrectly reported in the June 22 issue of The NCAA News. Rappl earned 400 career victories in softball.

Stanford's reported string of four straight Division I men's swimming and diving titles in the championships review section of the June 29 issue of The NCAA News is incorrect. Texas won in 1996 and Auburn won in 1997 before Stanford's victory this year. Also, Abilene Christian's reported streak in men's outdoor track was snapped this year by St. Augustine's.

CLINIC

The fifth Annual Hockey Development Coaches Clinic is slated for August 1-2 at Canisius. Professional coaches scheduled to attend and speak including Barry Smith of the Detroit Red Wings and Craig Ramsay of the Ottawa Senators. Collegiate coaches to be in attendance include Jeff Meredith of Fredonia State, and Tim Vanini of Cornell and Cortland State. NOTABLES

The 1998 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division I Player of the Year is Rice's Damon Thames. The junior shortstop drove in 115 runs to lead the NCAA in addition to hitting 26 home runs during the season.


DEATHS

Janice Jordan, director of student services for athletes at Delaware, died June 22 after a two-year bout with cancer. She was 49. A member of the Delaware faculty for 20 years, Jordan served as an assistant professor in the department of educational development and had been associate director of the university's Center for Counseling and Student Development.

Illinois football player Steve Willis died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound July 1. He was 22. Last season, Willis competed in eight games at safety, collecting 39 tackles.
