Pack of 'Bears' to gather soon

Are you named for legendary coach "Bear" Bryant?

If so, you may want to join the Pauls, Williams, Bears and Bryants from all across the country who will converge on the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, campus this fall to attend the Paul W. Bryant Museum reunion party honoring those named for the Alabama icon.

This will be the third year for the reunion, which had more than 350 attendees last year. Those attending will be treated to music, food, fun and prizes.

The 1998 reunion party will begin three hours before the kickoff of the Alabama-Brigham Young football game September 5.

Marketing academy debuts

A unique partnership between business and higher education has led to the creation of the University of Kentucky Sports Marketing Academy, which will be held July 20-23 on the Kentucky campus.

The program, designed to provide attendees with a variety of seminars covering effective sports marketing principles, as well as serving as a forum for state-of-the-art technologies and networking opportunities, is a joint project of the Kentucky Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics, the Kentucky Athletics Department and Host Communications Inc., a national sports marketing firm.

Speakers will include CBS Sports president Sean Mcmanus, WNBA president Val Ackerman and Steve Miller, Nike's global director of sports marking relations.

Other speakers will include representatives from several companies, including Gillette, Ocean Spray, Rawlings and GTE, as well as from several universities.

The attendance fee is $850 for corporate participants and $300 for collegiate and high-school administrators.

Pull up a seat

Need new ideas for stadium or arena management on your campus?

Athletics facility managers may want to check out the informational sessions offered during the International Association of Assembly Managers' (IAAM) 73rd Annual Conference and Trade Show July 24-28 in San Francisco.

Conference topics include several forums of interest to college athletics event managers, including a session on the Americans with Disabilities Act and a "Universities Town Hall."

This year's show is expected to be IAAM's largest ever, with more than 500 exhibitors. A virtual trade show will be offered on the association's Web site at www.iaam.org.

Three cheers for safety

As part of a new joint project between the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA) and the USA Association of Gymnasts (USAG), coaches and advisors of cheerleading squads can obtain safety certification during the USAG National Congress and during its regional mini-congresses this fall.

The National Congress will be held in Indianapolis August 19-23. The next regional mini-congress will be in New York October 14-18.

Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the exam will receive safety certification for four years. For more information, call the AACCA at 800/533-6383.

Division III notes

Facilities: Stephens College recently broke ground on the Stephens College Basketball/Volleyball Arena, a 28,000-square foot multipurpose building that will house the college's new basketball and volleyball teams, as well as intramural games and club sports. The 320-seat facility is expected to be completed this fall in time for the college's first intercollegiate basketball game ... Carthage College has received an $11 million gift to begin construction of a 122,000-square-foot athletics and recreation complex. The donation from Pat Tarble of Los Angeles, widow of Newton E. Tarble, is the largest in the college's history. The facility will include a 200-meter indoor running track with courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis in the infield. It also will feature a 40-meter swimming pool, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, aerobics workout space, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, locker rooms and offices for the athletics staff.

Sports sponsorship: Howard Payne University announced that it will add women's golf for the 1998-99 season. Current men's coach Pat Bell will guide the new women's team.

Conferences: The New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) has added three teams for its second year. Western New England College and Salve Regina University will join NEWLA's Southern Division, while the University of New England will be added to the Northern Division ... The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced its officers for the 1998-99 academic year. Roy B. Shilling Jr., president of Southwestern University (Texas) will serve as chair of the SCAC board of directors. Ronald K. Calgaard, president of Trinity University (Texas) and Samuel R. Williamson, vice-chancellor and president of the University of the South, will join Shilling on the SCAC Executive Committee. Glada C. Munt, director of athletics at Southwestern, will serve as chair of the SCAC Athletics Directors Council.

Miscellaneous: Jersey City State College has changed its name to New Jersey City University to reflect the institution's new designation as a university.
