Emory names Siqueiros head softball coach

Emory appointed Penny Siqueiros as head softball coach. The school is slated to begin varsity competition in the 1998-99 academic year.

For the past three years, Siqueiros has served as a facilitator and coordinating instructor at the Disney Institute in Orlando, Florida. She also coached at Florida State for three years, where she was an assistant primarily in charge of the outfield and hitting.

Siqueiros played softball collegiately at Florida State. She captured Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year honors as a senior. She also garnered all-region recognition twice and was named the team's most valuable player and most inspirational player during her junior season. She made three appearances at the Women's College World Series with Florida State.

Siqueiros earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Florida State in 1992 and 1995, respectively.

La Salle selected Michael J. McGinniss as president, effective July 1, 1999. McGinniss has been president at Christian Brothers.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mike Hermann hired at Niagara. Hermann has been associate athletics director for marketing at Xavier since June 1996 and served as assistant athletics director at the school from 1993 to 1996 ... Theophilus Gregory, athletics director and associate director of the Center for the Study of Sports and Leisure at Colorado-Colorado Springs resigned, effective August 1, to become director of outreach programs for the El Pomar Foundation in Colorado Springs. Gregory has been with the school since March 1993 ... Alfreeda Goff resigned as athletics director at Virginia State. Goff had held the position since 1994 ... Utah State appointed Bruce Van De Velde athletics director, replacing Chuck Bell, who accepted the athletics director post at San Jose State. Van De Velde most recently spent a year as an associate athletics director for development at Missouri ... Donna M. Ledwin selected as director of athletics at New Rochelle. Ledwin serves on the Division III Management Council and has been athletics director at Notre Dame (Maryland) for nine years.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Timothy Hale, Rochester's head men's cross country and track and field coach for 25 years, promoted to associate athletics director. Hale will relinquish his coaching duties ... Cincinnati promoted Paul Klaczak to associate athletics director for operations. Klaczak has been with the athletics program for 10 years, serving as director of ticket operations for the past seven in addition to working as special assistant for administration and operations to the athletics director since November ... UTEP chose Stephanie Rempe as associate director of athletics/senior woman administrator. Rempe most recently worked at Arizona as senior program coordinator for public relations.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mark Cox appointed assistant director of athletics for marketing and promotions at Hofstra. Cox has served in various capacities with the school's alumni office for three years ... Tulane named Scott Stricklin as assistant athletics director of media relations. For the past five years, Stricklin has been associate media relations director at Auburn.

COACHES

Baseball--Mark Linden resigned as head coach at Centenary (Louisiana) ... San Francisco selected Nino Giarratano as head coach. Giarratano has been assistant coach at Arizona State.

Baseball assistants--Juan Ranero hired as an assistant coach at Old Dominion. Ranero, who succeeds Rick Robinson, has been head coach at Rowan since 1994 ... Florida Southern added Pete Meyer as assistant coach. Meyer, an assistant baseball coach at Valdosta State for the past four years, succeeds Russ McNickle, who became an assistant at South Florida.

Men's basketball--Ray Martin appointed head coach at Long Island-Brooklyn. Martin replaces Ray Haskins, who resigned ... Eastern New Mexico named Terence Tyler head coach, effective July 1. Tyler has served as an assistant at Notre Dame since 1995 ... Tom Penders chosen to succeed Mike Jarvis as head coach at George Washington. Jarvis was named head coach at St. John's (New York). Penders most recently coached for 10 seasons at Texas, where he built a 208-110 record ... Winona State announced Michael Leaf as head coach. Women's basketball assistants--Therman Bronaugh became an assistant coach at Seton Hall after serving as an assistant coach at Buffalo for two years ... Penn State hired Michael Peck as assistant coach, replacing Susan Robinson Fruchtl, who resigned. Peck was third assistant women's basketball coach at Florida last season ... Margaret McKeon promoted to associ- ate head coach at George Washington. McKeon joined the program as an assistant coach before the 1995-96 season ... Men's and women's cross country--Rochester hired Richard MacKenzie as men's cross country coach, succeeding Timothy Hale, who was promoted to associate director of athletics at the school. MacKenzie has coached at MIT for two seasons, including serving as interim head coach during the 1997-98 season ... Michelle Branam chosen as men's and women's cross country coach at Catawba.

Field hockey--Hofstra named Kathy De Angelis head coach, effective July 1, replacing Pam Bastin. De Angelis currently heads the program at Southwest Missouri State and also is a coach with the United States Field Hockey program.

Field hockey assistant--Georgetown added Paula Wagoner as assistant coach. Wagoner is a 1998 graduate from Providence ... Valerie Coyle accepted the assistant coaching post at Delaware.

Football--Massachusetts-Boston's Gus Giardi announced plans to retire as head coach after four years.

Gymnastics--Jay Clark appointed assistant coach at Georgia. Clark, who succeeds Steve Ballard, has been head coach and competitive director with the Athens-Clarke Gymnastics Academy since 1996.

Women's hockey--Judy Parish chosen as head coach to succeed George Crowe, who announced plans to retire, effective September 1.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants--Jamie DuMont selected as assistant hockey coach at Hobart and William Smith ... Lake Superior State announced the hiring of Alan Dunbar as assistant coach. Dunbar has been a volunteer assistant coach at the school for the past two seasons and succeeds David Berard, who resigned.

Men's lacrosse--Wentworth Institute head coach Rich Bernasconi resigned, effective immediately. Bernasconi has coached within the program since 1995.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Roy Simmons III named assistant coach at Syracuse. Simmons, who has coached at the school from 1982-86 and 1990-92, has served as a high-school coach and secondary school counselor since 1995.

Women's lacrosse--Duke first assistant Theresa Ingram chosen as head women's lacrosse coach at Brown. Ingram succeeds Carolan Norris, who resigned to assume the head field hockey coaching position at Brown ... Beth Lannon became the head coach at Misericordia. Lannon has been an athletics department intern and field hockey recruiting coordinator at the school.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Danielle Caro, head women's lacrosse coach at Manhattan for the past two seasons, hired as an assistant coach at Colgate.

Men's and women's crew/rowing--Robyn Horner announced as head women's coach at Duke.

Men's and women's crew/rowing assistant--Vassar hired Nancy LaRocque as assistant men's and women's rowing coach.

Men's soccer--Tom Poitras accepted the position of men's soccer coach at New Hampshire ... Mitch Rubin appointed head coach at Shepherd. Most recently, Rubin has been head coach at Linganore (Maryland) High School, where he compiled a 50-21-9 record ... Marietta added Patrick Holguin as head coach, succeeding Chris Przemieniecki.

Women's soccer--Totty O. Totty named head coach at Clayton State, replacing Bill Holleman. Totty is a former Nigerian national team member and has been an assistant coach at New Hampshire and director of coaching for the Amherst (New Hampshire) Soccer Club ... Christopher Newport named Jen Clark head coach.

Softball--Hillsdale hired Jay Jondro as head coach. Jondro was head girls' coach at Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central (Michigan) High School ... Mary Jo Firnbach accepted the position of head coach at Syracuse. The school is slated to begin competition during the 1999-2000 season. Firnbach most recently was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Illinois State.

Softball assistants--Dana Jenkins added as assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte. Jenkins has been an assistant at Campbell ... Centenary (Louisiana) selected Matt Prysock as assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis--Nason "Chip" Fishback appointed head tennis and squash coach at William Smith. Since 1993, Fishback has worked as women's assistant coach at North Carolina.

Men's and women's track and field--Two-time Olympian Leroy Burrell named head coach at Houston. Burrell, who has been an assistant with the program for five years, takes over the men's and women's outdoor and indoor programs.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Celena Mondie-Milner and Rodney Rothoff added as assistant women's coaches at Clemson.

Women's volleyball--J. Scott Lester hired as head coach at Bradley replacing Kalani Mahi, who resigned to become an assistant coach at Illinois. Lester has been head coach at LSU since 1985 ... Methodist appointed Doug Tabbert head coach to succeed Brenda Hillman, who resigned to pursue doctoral studies. Tabbert was a graduate assistant coach for volleyball and softball at Bluffton for two years ... T. J. Meagher named head coach at Campbell succeeding Jewel Lehman, who resigned to pursue doctoral studies. Since 1995, Meagher has been an assistant coach at Mississippi.

Women's volleyball assistant--Campbell selected Kristine Rogers as graduate assistant coach.

Water polo--Merchant Marine hired Joe Linehan as head water polo coach and assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach. Linehan most recently coached the San Antonio Water Polo Club.

Wrestling--Seton Hall assistant Joe Ryan promoted to interim head coach during the 1997-98 season. Ryan succeeds Sonny Greenhalgh, who resigned.

STAFF

Business manager--David Sayler accepted the position of athletics business manager at Hartford.

Compliance--Detroit announced Paul Henderson Jr. as compliance and academic coordinator. Henderson, who succeeds Brad Bertani, most recently worked as a compliance intern at Conference USA.

Facilities/events--Lehigh named Allen Biddinger facilities and events manager.

Marketing/promotions--Edward Posaski hired as director of marketing and promotions at Merchant Marine. Posaski has worked in the athletics department at Morehead State for the past two years ... Centenary (Louisiana) chose Justin Kern as associate director of athletics marketing.

Media relations--Eric McDowell selected as director of athletics media relations at Massachusetts-Lowell.

Sales and promotions--Jason Jenkins accepted the sales and promotions manager position at Lehigh.

Sports information--Philadelphia Textile named Tony Berich sports information director. Berich, who replaces Shannon Wasson, comes from Massachusetts-Lowell, where he was assistant director of athletics media relations ... Craig Lawson became sports information director at Centenary (Louisiana).

Sports information assistants--Tony Hamilton selected as sports information and marketing assistant at Butler. Succeeding Courtney Carey, Hamilton worked in the school's sports information office for the last three years ... Georgia sports information intern Chad Austin appointed assistant sports information director at Georgia Tech ... Jake Keys promoted to assistant sports information director at Marshall, effective June 1. Keys had been serving as interim assistant sports information director since November 1997 ... LaTanya Dunn added as sports information assistant at Lehigh ... Hartford named Jason Guy assistant sports information director.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Brett Tudsbury became assistant strength and conditioning coach at Montana State.

Ticket operations--Lehigh chose Rob Andrey as ticket manager ... Meagan Davis promoted to director of ticket operations at Cincinnati. Davis has been assistant ticket manager since 1994 and has served as interim director of ticket operations for the past six months.

CONFERENCES

The Ohio Valley Conference named James A. Hefner president and Angelo Volpe vice-president for 1998-99.

Valerie Richardson hired as director of championships and membership services for the West Coast Conference. Richardson was director of marketing for the MAAC Properties of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Donald Spencer, president at Western Illinois, elected chair of the Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council, effective July 1.

Roanoke director of athletics and head soccer coach Scott Allison selected as president of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the next two years. The conference also announced Joe Bush as president-elect. Bush currently is athletics director at Hampden-Sydney and is chair of the NCAA Division III Football Committee.

ASSOCIATIONS

Jimmy Clayton and Dianne Dailey named associate directors of the College Golf Foundation. Clayton retired in 1997 after 16 years as men's golf coach at Texas and currently works as special assistant to the school's athletics department. Dailey presently serves as women's golf coach and associate athletics director at Wake Forest.


NOTABLES

The National Association of Athletic Development Directors announced Bud Keever as volunteer of the year and Mike Hamilton as fund-raiser of the year. Keever is president of the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund and ranks as its top volunteer. Hamilton is associate athletics director, marketing and development for the men's department at Tennessee.

Vince Cazzetta named recipient of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators' Outstanding Individual Achievement Award. Cazzetta, past NACMA president and original board member, has been at Army for 11 years, currently serving as assistant athletics director for marketing and development. The organization also selected W. James Host winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award. Host is the founder and chief executive officer of Host Communications, Inc., the first and only corporate marketing firm for the NCAA.


DEATHS

Bill Fiske, former associate head women's basketball coach at West Virginia, died recently of a diabetes-related heart attack. He was 51. Fiske, who played basketball collegiately at Southern Connecticut State, was named first assistant coach at West Virginia in 1981 and associate head coach two years later. He stepped down after the 1985-86 season due to disease-related blindness.

Grace C. Kenney, a 39-year member of the Gettysburg athletics department, died June 17, in Georgetown, South Carolina. She was 76. Kenney joined the Gettysburg staff in 1948 and worked to expand the women's athletics program from two sports to 11. In addition to fulfilling coaching duties at the school, Kenney also chaired the health and exercise sciences department.
