Little, Weiberg among CoSIDA award winners

Bill Little of the University of Texas at Austin and Steve Weiberg of USA Today headline the list of 1998 award recipients who were honored at the annual meeting of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) June 28-July 2 in Spokane, Washington.

Little, who has served at Texas for 31 years in sports information and media relations, received the Arch Ward Award, which is presented to a CoSIDA member who has made an outstanding contribution to sports information. It is CoSIDA's highest award.

Weiberg received the Jake Wade Award, which goes to an individual in the media who has made an outstanding contribution to college athletics.

Little began working at Texas in 1968 as an assistant in the sports information office. He became director of sports information in 1983 and in 1994 was named assistant athletics director for external services. He was CoSIDA president in 1988-89 and was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1992. In 1991, Little was presented with the Wilber Snypp Award from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for his service to and promotion of college baseball. In 1997, he was presented with the Lester Jordan Award for his contributions to CoSIDA's academic all-America program.

Weiberg, an original member of the USA Today staff, has covered college sports for the national newspaper since 1983. In his role as national college writer, he has covered 11 championship bowl games and every men's Final Four since 1983. He also has covered all summer Olympics since 1984. He was president of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association in 1996-97.

Other award recipients were Kentucky Wesleyan University sports information director Roy Pickerill, who will receive the Warren Berg Award (presented to a college division SID who has made an outstanding contribution to sports information), and South Carolina State University sports information director Bill Hamilton, who will receive the Kodak Good Person Award (presented to recognize an SID for civic involvement and contributions outside athletics).

Also, Ed Given of Middle Tennessee State University, David Housel of Auburn University, Pete Moore of Ithaca College and Budd Thalman of Pennsylvania State University were inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame.
