Bethune-Cookman names basketball coach

Bethune-Cookman selected Sandra L. Booker as head women's basketball coach. Booker succeeds Rosina Peason, who resigned for personal reasons.

For the past seven years, Booker has served as head women's basketball coach, academic advisor and physical education instructor at Palm Beach (Florida) Community College. She guided squads to the state junior college tournament five out of seven seasons on her way to building a 137-55 mark at the school.

In addition to coaching on the community college level, Booker has fulfilled assistant coaching responsibilities at Central Florida, Buffalo and Rensselaer.

Booker earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in 1989.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

John Thompson chosen as athletics director at North Carolina Wesleyan ... Bill Goldring resigned as director of athletics at Morningside. The school selected Beth Sibenaller as interim athletics director ... William A. Marshall, director of athletics and recreation at Franklin & Marshall for 27 years, stepped down to serve as special assistant for athletics to the vice-president of the college while fulfilling duties as president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Marshall plans to retire in October 1999. The school named dean of admissions, Peter Van Buskirk, interim director of athletics.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Connecticut announced Kenneth M. Cutler as associate director of athletics for advancement. Cutler has been director of athletic development at Penn State since July 1991 ... John Sheffield appointed senior associate athletics director and chief of staff at Cincinnati. For the past two years, Sheffield has been director of ticket operations at Wisconsin. Cincinnati also selected Jeanette Shoecraft as associate athletics director for business operations. She has operated J. L. Shoecraft Financial Services for the past six years ... Binghamton associate director of athletics Sheryl Sousa resigned to accept a similar position at Brandeis. Sousa has held the associate athletics director position for the past four years.

Mary Boyd promoted to assistant director of athletics for corporate sales and marketing at Northwestern. Since 1993, Boyd has served as assistant director of athletics development ... Franklin & Marshall sports information director Tom Byrnes promoted to assistant director of athletics for external relations at the school ... Audra Garsys accepted the position of assistant athletics director at Hilbert ... Heather Lyke hired as assistant athletics director for compliance at Ohio State. Lyke has been assistant athletics director for compliance at Cincinnati for the past two years and senior woman administrator for the past year ... Baseball--South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner awarded a one-year contract extension ... Jim Morris, head baseball coach at Appalachian State since 1974, retired to teach full time in the school's health, leisure and exercise science department. Morris built a 611-475-4 mark during his tenure.

Women's basketball -- Oneonta State announced Rich Conover as women's basketball coach ... South Carolina granted Susan Walvius a one-year contract extension ... Darryl Smith accepted the head women's basketball coaching post at Wichita State. Smith, head coach at Metropolitan State since 1990, replaces Linda Hargrove, who resigned to become head coach of the American Basketball League's Colorado Xplosion ... Denise Dunbar, in her fourth year as head coach at Massachusetts-Lowell, named head coach at Wisconsin-Platteville. Dunbar replaces Shelley Bardon-Till, who resigned.

Women's basketball assistants--California hired Sharrona Alexander and Jualeah Woods as assistant coaches. Alexander worked as assistant coach at Troy State for three seasons and Woods has been head girls' basketball coach at Santa Monica (California) High School for two years ... Joe Westerfer added as assistant coach at George Mason. Westerfer has been an assistant at St. John's (New York) for two seasons ... Kansas named Pam De Costa assistant coach ... Hoffman, who also will be an assistant track and field coach, has been assistant women's cross country and track and field coach at Clemson for the last year ... Emily Pulsifer appointed women's cross country and assistant track and field coach at Washington and Lee.

Field hockey assistants--Iowa added Kristen Holmes as an assistant coach ... Dianne Cegielski assumed assistant field hockey coaching duties at Colgate. Cegielski has been marketing and promotions intern for the James Madison athletics department.

Football assistants--Furman named George Harrelson assistant coach ... Declan Walsh selected as running backs coach at Colgate. Walsh most recently coached tight ends and the offensive line at Albany ... Bryan Durrington appointed assistant football coach at Lehigh.

Men's and women's golf--Jack Bell resigned as golf coach at Virginia Commonwealth ... Monmouth (New Jersey) appointed Pat Jordan women's golf coach ... Dan Sommers selected as head women's golf coach at Mesa State.

Ice hockey--James Adair named head men's ice hockey coach at Villanova.

Ice hockey assistant--David Berard succeeds Dave Peters as assistant ice hockey coach at Providence. Berard has been an assistant at Lake Superior State for two seasons ... New Hampshire College added John Nanof as men's associate hockey coach.

Women's crew/rowing--Emily Plesser named full-time head coach at UC Davis. Plesser, who has served as part-time head coach for the program's first two years at varsity status, has been with the program since 1990.

Men's and women's soccer--Carleton selected Julie Seldon as head women's coach. Seldon, an assistant varsity soccer coach on the high-school level for the last four seasons, succeeds Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, who resigned to become head basketball coach at the school ... Aldo Nardiello hired as head men's and women's coach at Rensselaer. Nardiello, head men's soccer coach at Albany from 1987-90 and at Union from 1991-96, carries an over-all collegiate mark of 94-58-11 ... North Dakota appointed Matt Townsend head women's soccer coach, replacing Gordon Henderson, who resigned to take a head women's soccer coaching position at Idaho State. Townsend has been a technical director for the Manitoba Soccer Association since 1995 ... Old Westbury named Patrick Horne head men's soccer coach. Horne also serves as sports information director at the school.

Men's and women's soccer assistants--Rob Sanford added as men's assistant coach at Sewanee (University of the South). Sanford, a part-time assistant coach with the program for the past two seasons, has fulfilled head boys' soccer coaching duties and taught Spanish at Franklin County (Tennessee) High School since 1996 ... Penn State chose Zac Shaw as assistant women's soccer coach. Shaw has worked as director of museum operations at the National Soccer Hall of Fame during the past year ... Connecticut women's second assistant coach Karen Ferguson promoted to top assistant. Ferguson succeeds Karen Warner, who resigned to begin graduate studies as Yale. The school named George Kostelis women's second assistant. Kostelis was a volunteer assistant coach during the 1997 season.

Softball--Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis announced Shonda Spagnola as head softball coach and coordinator of marketing. Spagnola was head softball coach at Ashland for two years ... Glenn Moore accepted the head coaching position at LSU ... Plattsburgh State added Kristina Kistler as head softball coach and assistant women's basketball coach ... Amy Tenute, interim head coach at Carleton during the 1998 season, appointed head softball coach at the school. She also will be assistant volleyball coach and teach in the physical education and recreation department ... La Salle selected Carla Camino as head coach. Camino has been an assistant at Drexel for five years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--George D. Nichols III chosen as head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Amherst, effective July 1. Nichols most recently served as an assistant coach at Yale ... Indiana added Dorsey Tierney as head women's swimming coach.

Men's swimming and diving assistant--Cory Hillis hired as assistant men's swimming and diving coach at Pittsburgh. Hillis was men's assistant coach at Princeton for two seasons.

Men's and women's tennis--Northwestern hired Claire Pollard as women's tennis coach, succeeding Lisa Fortman, who resigned. Pollard has been head women's tennis coach at Lamar for five years and head men's coach for four seasons ... Morehead State selected Nik DeVore head men's and women's tennis coach. DeVore most recently worked as men's assistant coach at Boise State ... Scott Enge named head women's tennis coach and assistant director of the professional tennis management program at Methodist.

Men's and women's track and field--John Marshall resigned as head men's and women's track and field coach at Villanova.

Women's volleyball--Villanova appointed Heather Hoehn head coach ... Robin Grainger accepted the position of head women's volleyball coach at Keene State.

Women's volleyball assistants--Anne-Sylvie Monnet and Lonise Norfleet added as assistant coaches at Iowa.

Women's water polo--Allyson Gillespie named women's water polo coach at Villanova.

STAFF

Athletic trainer--Methodist promoted Jennifer Wuyscik to head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine. Wuyscik has been assistant athletic trainer for three years and succeeds Jill Craig, who resigned to work at Texas Woman's University.

Assistant athletic trainers--Chris Garrett and Brandon Reynolds named assistant athletic trainers at Methodist, replacing Jennifer Wuyscik and Erik Hayes. Garrett was head athletic trainer at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, and Reynolds most recently interned as an athletic trainer at Bridgewater (Virginia) ... Montana selected Jennifer Mason as assistant athletic trainer, succeeding Chris Fry, who resigned. Mason worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Vanderbilt for the past year.

Business manager--Tim Schraffenberger appointed business manager at Cincinnati. Schraffenberger has been with the university since 1993, working in sponsored program accounting.

Fitness center director--Whittier's Kris Kimura promoted from graduate fellow in the PER department to director of the George Allen Fitness Center. Kimura has been an assistant women's basketball coach and assistant men's and women's track coach at the school for the past two years.

Marketing/promotions--Glenn Hofmann named director of sports communications and marketing at Lehigh ... North Carolina-Wilmington appointed Chris Delisio director of athletics marketing and development ... J. D. Griffith accepted the position of athletics marketing and promotions direction at Utah State ... Northern Colorado director of athletics marketing/promotions Ellen Cosenza resigned to become assistant director of annual giving at Wabash.

Marketing/promotions assistant--Kelly Jensen chosen as assistant director of marketing and promotions. Jensen has been a marketing intern for two years.

Media relations--Brett Jewkes resigned as media relations director at Southern Utah, effective June 30. Jewkes plans to join Coltrin & Associates, a public relations firm in New York City.

Sports information--Norfolk State appointed Glen Mason interim sports information director ... Lehigh announced Frank Thomas as director of sports information.

Sports information assistants--Derick S. Hackett will serve as interim women's assistant sports information director at Iowa ... North Carolina-Greensboro named Clara Andrews assistant sports information director, effective July 1.

Ticket manager--Southern Methodist named John Moreland ticket manager. Moreland has been an assistant ticket manager at North Carolina for five years.

AGREEMENT

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten Conference signed multiyear contracts with Sunshine Football Classic allowing schools from the two conferences to meet in the 1998 bowl game. The Sunshine Football Classic, formerly the Carquest Bowl, is scheduled to be played at 7:30 p.m. December 29 at Pro Player Stadium. The game will be televised on TBS Superstation.

CONFERENCES

The Missouri Valley Conference awarded commissioner Doug Elgin a four-year contract extension through 2002. Also, Nikki Epley promoted to director of championship operations for the conference. Epley was the conference's assistant director of marketing for for the 1997-98 academic year. The conference also promoted Dan Butterly to assistant commissioner. Butterly, who has been with the conference for six years, has been director of marketing for the last four years.

The Knickerbocker Baseball Conference elected Ed Wolfarth commissioner and John Wright president/treasurer. Wolfarth is athletics director at Old Westbury and Wright is athletics director at Mt. St. Mary's (Maryland).

The following Lone Star Conference officers have been elected for the 1998-99 academic year and will make up the executive committee: Dennis McCabe, Tarleton State, chair; David Burks, Harding, vice-chair; Russell Long, West Texas A&M, second vice-chair; and Don Davis, Cameron, third vice-chair.

The American Southwest Conference Council of Presidents announced the following elected officers for the 1988-99 academic year: Milam Joseph, Dallas, president; Howell Todd, Mississippi College, vice-president; Vic Morgan, Sul Ross State, past president.

The Sun Belt Conference added Kevin DeRamus as assistant director of media services. DeRamus has been assistant sports information director at Southwestern Louisiana for the past four years.

The Trans America Athletic Conference announced its officers for 1998-99: Harold J. McGee, president at Jacksonville State, president; Jeff Altier, athletics director at Stetson, vice-president; Blaine Hughes, senior associate athletics director at Georgia State, secretary; Carl Patton, president at Georgia State, vice-chair, president's council.

Gary Richter hired as the Mid-American Conference's assistant commissioner for communications, effective July 1. Richter has been sports information director at UTEP for two years.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics announced the following officers: Jim Livengood, athletics director, Arizona, president; Dave Hart, Jr., athletics director, Florida State, first vice-president; Debbie Yow, athletics director, Maryland, second vice-president; Bill Bradshaw, athletics director, DePaul, third vice-president. Also, the following were elected to the NACDA's 29-person executive committee: Joe Castiglione, athletics director, Oklahoma; Jim Fallis, athletics director, Northern Colorado; Howard Patterson, athletics director, Incarnate Word; Don Tencher, athletics director, Rhode Island College; Linda Bruno, Atlantic 10 commissioner; Amy Hackett, associate athletics director, Utah; Sharlene Peter, athletics director, Eastern Connecticut State; Kim Record, associate athletics director, Florida State; and Keith Tribble, executive director of the FedEx Orange Bowl.

NATIONAL OFFICE

David Batson hired as membership services representative. Batson served as athletics compliance education coordinator for six years at Texas A&M.

Amy Frankenstein selected as assistant director of championships. She most recently worked as an associate commissioner of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.


NOTABLES

Pittsburgh pitcher Eric Rosing and swimmer Erin Bissell awarded the Big East Conference/Target Scholar-Athlete Graduate Studies Scholarship.

Minnesota-Duluth seniors Steve Blackmarr and Betsy Pachal named top male and female scholar-athletes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for 1997-98. Blackmarr, who played football, is winner of the Dr. William Britton Award and Pachal, who competed in basketball, is winner of the Willis R. Kelly Award.

Dan Quayle, former vice-president of the United States, and Leslie Greis, financial professional, selected to receive the Rolex Achievement Award presented by the College Golf Foundation and Rolex Watch U.S.A. and given to former varsity collegiate golfers who have achieved excellence in their chosen field and made a contribution to society. Quayle competed at DePauw and Gries was the first and only woman to play on the men's varsity squad at Harvard.

Bernard Baruch's Ray Rankis was inducted into the Latvian Hall of Fame. Rankis currently serves as assistant athletics director and men's basketball coach at the school.


DEATHS

Darin Michael Bryan, sports information director and assistant director of communications at Rose-Hulman, died June 11 after a two-car accident in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was 29. Bryan had been with the school for four years.

Charles "Red" Silva, former Springfield swimming coach, died June 16 at the age of 87. Silva, who graduated from Springfield in 1934, coached and taught life saving at the school from 1937 to 1978. During his tenure, he produced 200 all-America swimmers and one Olympic gold medalist. He was elected into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976 and went on to become chairman of the organization's board of directors.
