NCAA Register discontinued

The NCAA Register, a monthly supplement to The NCAA News since 1994, has been discontinued.

The Register primarily contained administrative information such as minutes from the division governance structures, complete infractions reports, listings of institutional secondary violations reported to the NCAA, appeals on student-athlete reinstatement and administrative review panel actions. It also contained a monthly federal relations report.

Some of that information will continue to be reported in The NCAA News, but much of it will be made available to the membership through online means.

Specifically, the News will continue to carry a monthly federal relations report. The News also will print minutes from the Divisions I, II and III Management Councils, the Division I Board of Directors, and the Divisions II and III Presidents Councils. Bylaw 30 revisions for Divisions II and III also will be published in the News.

"The Register served its purpose in that it delivered a compact package of regulatory information to those who needed it," said David Pickle, News editor-in-chief. "However, it is a relatively expensive way of delivering that material, and much of the information is of interest only to a limited audience. Because of those factors, it seemed that the time is right to use Internet delivery for this information."

Information on how to access the reports that no longer will be printed will be provided soon.

Pickle said he is confident that the users of the infractions and compliance-related information have a high degree of technical ability and will have no trouble adjusting to exclusive Internet delivery.

However, he said a more cautious approach seemed appropriate with reports from the governance structure.

The NCAA constitution requires that such minutes be distributed to the membership. Pickle said that although it is almost certain that at some point that distribution will be made through electronic methods, it would be prudent to provide the minutes in a printed form for the time being.

"We will continue to discuss this with the membership so that we can get this information to them in the most user-friendly and efficient way possible," Pickle said.
