NCAA receives 44 applications for membership

In anticipation of August 1, when the moratorium on new members will be lifted, the NCAA has received membership applications from 44 institutions.

Applications were sent to 81 institutions that had inquired about membership in the Association, and 44 of those applications were submitted by the June 15 deadline.

One institution applied for membership to Division I; 24 institutions applied for membership to Division II; and 19 institutions applied for membership to Division III.

The Division I application will be forwarded directly to the Division I Management Council for consideration at its July 27-29 meeting in Philadelphia. The council's recommendation will be forwarded to the Division I Board of Directors for consideration at its August 11 meeting in Chicago.

Division II applications will be forwarded to the Division II Membership Committee, which will consider them at its July 13-14 meeting in Indianapolis. The membership committee's recommendations will be forwarded to the Division II Management Council, which will then forward its recommendations to the Division II Presidents Council for consideration at its August 11 meeting in Chicago.

Division III applications will be forwarded to the Division III Membership Committee, which will consider them at its June 25-26 meeting in Lake Tahoe, California. The membership committee's recommendations will be forwarded to the Division III Management Council, which will then forward its recommendations to the Division III Presidents Council for consideration at its August 11 meeting in Chicago.

Interested individuals also should note that while applications may be filed any time, they are considered only once a year. The next opportunity to apply for NCAA membership will be next summer.

Institutions that have applied for membership will be notified of their status by August 15, 1998.

Institutions that are accepted will begin their four-year provisional membership period on September 1, 1998. The provisional membership period runs concurrent with the academic year.
