Jarvis hired at St. John's (New York)

St. John's (New York) selected Mike Jarvis as head men's basketball coach replacing Fran Fraschilla, who was released after two seasons.

For the past eight seasons, Jarvis has headed the head men's basketball program at George Washington, compiling a 152-90 record and leading squads to four NCAA tournament appearances. Before his stint at George Washington, Jarvis spent five years as head coach at Boston College, where he became the school's most victorious coach with a mark of 101-51. Jarvis joined Boston College after seven years as head coach at Cambridge (Massachusetts) Rindge and Latin High School, where he captured three Division One state titles and was named Massachusetts High School Coach of the Year four times. Jarvis will be an assistant coach with the 1998 U. S. World Championship team competing in Athens, Greece, during the 1998 FIBA World Championship. He also is the current president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

Collegiately, Jarvis played basketball and baseball at Northeastern University before graduating in 1968. He also earned a master's of education degree from Boston University in 1984 and is working toward a doctorate in sports psychology.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Robert Spitzer named president at Gonzaga, effective July 1. Spitzer succeeds Harry H. Sladich, vice-president, administration and planning at the school, who served in the interim ... North Carolina State Chancellor Edward B. Fort announced plans to retire, effective June 30, 1999 ... Neal Malicky, president at Baldwin-Wallace, will retire, effective June 30, 1999 ... Maryland selected Clayton D. Mote Jr. as president. Mote has been vice-chancellor for university relations at California.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Western Michigan appointed Patrick Forrest faculty athletics representative and chairman of the athletics board of control. Forrest, an associate professor of accountancy, has been with the school since 1982 and succeeds Adrian Edwards.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jeff Childress accepted the position of athletics director at Pfeiffer ... Xavier chose Michael Bobinski as director of athletics, succeeding Jeff Fogelson, who became director of athletics and recreational services at Seton Hall. Bobinski has served in the same capacity at Akron since 1994 ... Missouri-Kansas City's Lee Hunt announced plans to retire as athletics director, a position he has held since 1986. The school selected Ed Grom, assistant director of athletics for the past six years, to serve in the interim.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jeremy C. Freeman selected as assistant athletics director at Earlham. Freeman has been assistant men's and women's tennis coach and served as interim head men's tennis coach at the school. He also will fulfill head men's and women's tennis coaching duties at Earlham ... Cory Schwartz named assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at Evansville, succeeding Laura Tietjen, who was promoted to athletics director at the school. Schwartz was director of the RAM P.R.I.D.E./academic and support services program at Colorado State ... Campbell promoted Stan Cole to assistant athletics director for media services. Cole has been sports information director at the school since 1989 ... Jane Pearson promoted to assistant athletics director for compliance and certification at Maryland. For the past two years she fulfilled compliance coordinator duties at the school ... Fitchburg State announced the selection of Jonathan Harper as assistant director of athletics. Harper, who has been an intern with the Eastern College Athletic Conference for the past year, also will fulfill sports information director responsibilities ... Bill Stiles named assistant director of athletics and sports information director at Chowan. Stiles most recently was assistant sports information director and compliance aide at Alvernia ... Fresno State added Rose Pietrzak as assistant athletics director/athletics media relations, replacing Dave Haglund, who accepted a similar post at Maryland. Pietrzak most recently worked in freelance media/account management projects for private institutions and companies.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Oregon State named Marianne Vydra senior woman administrator, replacing Robyn Sharp. Vydra has worked at the school since 1992 as an assistant coordinator and coordinator of student-athlete services.

COACHES

Baseball--Whittier chose Mike Rizzo as part-time head coach for the 1998-99 season, replacing Jim Pigott, who will focus on marketing and Web page development for the college. Rizzo has been an assistant coach with the program for the past 11 years.

Men's basketball--Steve Lamie promoted to head coach at Grove City. Lamie, an assistant for four years, succeeds John Barr, who retired after 26 years ... Dale Race, Minnesota-Duluth's most victorious men's basketball coach, stepped down to accept the position of Bulldog Club/athletics marketing coordinator at the school. Race was head coach for 14 seasons and will be succeeded by Gary Holquist, assistant coach since 1986 ... Valparaiso awarded 11-year head coach Homer Drew a contract extension through the year 2005-06. Drew has built an 108-44 record and captured four consecutive Mid-Continent Conference regular-season and conference tournament titles ... Ronnie Arrow accepted the head coaching position at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Arrow coached at South Alabama for seven years.

Men's basketball assistants--San Diego added Terry Boesel as an assistant. Boesel, head coach at La Verne for the past three seasons, replaces Marty Wilson, who became an assistant at UC Santa Barbara ... Oliver Antigua appointed assistant coach at Pittsburgh. Antigua replaces Vince Taylor, who assumed an assistant coaching post at Wyoming ... Tennessee announced the hiring of Ray Grant as men's basketball administrative assistant ... John Marhefka selected as an assistant coach at Grove City. Marhefka has been a graduate assistant men's basketball coach at Armstrong Atlantic State for two years ... Army named Chris Beal assistant coach.

Women's basketball--Sherri Abbey-Nowatzki chosen as head coach at Army. She joins Army from St. Bonaventure ... Four-year Dayton head coach Clemette Haskins resigned, effective June 30. Haskins finishes her tenure at the school with a 35-73 record ... Lynn Griffin accepted the head coaching position at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Griffin spent the past two years as head women's basketball coach and physical education instructor at South Dakota ... Rhode Island College hired Mike Kelley as head coach to replace Ken Hopkins, who resigned at the end of the season. Kelley built a 60-21 record in three seasons as head girls' basketball coach at North Kingstown (Rhode Island) High School ... Buffalo named Cheryl Lynn Dozier head coach. Dozier, an assistant coach at Michigan State for the past five seasons, succeeds Sal Buscaglia, who accepted a head coaching post at Manhattan ... Lee Buchanan appointed head coach at Francis Marion, replacing Wes Moore, who was named head coach at Chattanooga. Buchanan was head coach at Brescia for 12 years and athletics director for women's sports for six years ... Fort Lewis selected Jeff Goldstein as head coach, replacing Keith Durham, who became head men's coach at the school. Goldstein most recently worked as interim head women's basketball coach at Wayne State (Nebraska) for two seasons.

Women's basketball assistants--Jennifer Jacoby chosen as assistant coach at Indiana. She replaces Malisa Bryant, who was named assistant coach at Northern Illinois. Jacoby played professionally for two years with the Portland Power of the American Basketball League ... Emporia State hired Natasha Taylor as an assistant coach. For the past year, Taylor has been an assistant at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas ... Dean Mendes added as assistant coach at Brown. Mendes has worked as an assistant at Worcester State for two years ... Maryland named Jeanette Armentano assistant coach. Armentano has been assistant coach at Cal State Northridge since 1994 ... Kelly Fitzpatrick selected as assistant coach at Georgetown. For the past year, Fitzpatrick has been an assistant coach at Duquesne ... Jason Conner accepted the women's assistant coaching position at South Alabama ... Iowa named Kristi Kinne assistant basketball coach ... John Ardizone and Joy Kwasniak chosen as assistants at Army. Ardizone most recently served as assistant coach at Canisius and Kwasniak was an assistant at St. Bonaventure.

Men's and women's cross country--Pfeiffer selected Seph Hatley as head men's and women's cross country coach ... Lisa Hockersmith, head women's cross country coach at Centre, appointed head coach of the school's men's team for the 1998-99 season, succeeding David Anderson, who will continue as a professor of economics at the school. Hockersmith will retain her duties as assistant track coach ... Evansville promoted Shane Thread to head men's and women's coach. Thread has been an assistant coach at the school since 1997 and replaces Frank McClary, who became associate director of admissions at the school.

Field hockey--Plymouth State named Abby Burbank head coach, succeeding Wynn Hohlt, who accepted a coaching position at Bates. Burbank, an assistant women's lacrosse coach since 1994 and assistant field hockey coach last year at William and Mary, also will assume women's lacrosse coaching responsibilities.

Football--Dave Murray selected as head coach at Alfred, effective July 1. Murray, who replaces Jim Moretti, has been head coach at Lebanon Valley.

Football assistants--Moravian appointed Patrick Milligan defensive coordinator. Milligan has been defensive coordinator and head strength and conditioning coach at Central Connecticut State ... Army added John Reagan, Bob Shoop and Tony Oden as assistants. Reagan will be a junior varsity assistant and work with varsity offensive linemen. Shoop will be defensive backs coach and Oden will serve as junior varsity assistant coach and varsity defensive backs coach.

Men's and women's golf--Will Morris named golf coach at Whittier, succeeding Mitch Carty, who will retain water polo coaching duties. Morris also will assume part-time women's basketball coaching duties, replacing Trish Van Oosbree, who will continue with the school in her academic appointment. Morris has worked as associate head men's basketball coach at Cal State Hayward for the past two years ... Indiana/ Purdue-Indianapolis chose John Andrews as head men's coach, replacing Michael O'Toole, who resigned. Andrews has been a teaching professional at Saddlebrook Golf Club in Indianapolis for the past three years.

Men's gymnastics--Ed LeGard accepted the position of assistant men's gymnastics coach at Army.

Ice hockey assistants--Army named Brian Riley assistant coach. Riley was head coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's School in Fairbault, Minnesota, for two years ... Bill Watson, assistant coach at Western Michigan, stepped down to pursue other career opportunities. Watson has been assistant coach for three seasons ... Colgate assistant coach Kristin Steele selected as assistant women's hockey coach at Niagara.

Men's lacrosse--John Brubaker appointed the first men's lacrosse head coach at Plattsburgh State. The school is scheduled to begin NCAA competition in the spring of 1998. During the past year, Brubaker worked as head men's lacrosse coach at State University of New York at Farmingdale.

Women's lacrosse--Pfeiffer selected Mike Gambrill as women's lacrosse coach.

Women's soccer--Stevan Hernandez announced as head women's soccer coach at St. Andrews Presbyterian, effective August 1. Hernandez, who also will serve as head softball coach, most recently served as head assistant women's softball coach at Wingate ... Jeannine Cridge hired as head coach at La Salle. For the past four years, Cridge has been head women's coach at Gwynedd-Mercy.

Women's soccer assistant--Rhode Island named Stacy Strauss assistant coach. Strass spent last season as an assistant at Dartmouth.

Softball--Tina Johnson appointed head coach at Macalester. Johnson has been head coach at Lafayette (Missouri) High School for eight years and was pitching and catching coach at Missouri-St. Louis last season ... Julie Pharr accepted the head softball coaching post at Elon ... West Georgia added Tabetha Stephens as softball coach ... Belmont announced the hiring of Charlie Gunter as head coach. Gunter, head coach at Radford for the past three seasons, replaces interim head coach Kim Stanfill ... Milwaukee School of Engineering named Daniel Bantin as head coach. Bantin, who most recently coached at Trinity Christian College, succeeds Kelly Halverson.

Women's swimming--Chris Coraggio appointed head women's coach at Northern Michigan, replacing Karl Zueger, who served one year as interim coach and one year as head coach.

Men's and women's tennis--Methodist announced Farley Youman as head men's coach and director of the professional tennis management program at the school. Youman spent one year as head men's tennis coach and physical education instructor at Campbell ... Jeremy C. Freeman assumed the head coaching post at Earlham. Freeman has been assistant men's and women's coach and served as interim head men's coach. He also will assume assistant athletics director responsibilities ... North Carolina selected Roland Thornqvist head women's coach to succeed 23-year head coach Kitty Harrison, who retired. Thornqvist has been head women's tennis coach at Kansas for the past two years ... Illinois hired Sujay Lama as head women's tennis coach. Lama has been the top assistant at Florida since 1995.

Men's and women's track and field--Villanova head men's and women's track coach John Marshall resigned after four years to pursue other opportunities. Marshall will continue as a special independent consultant to the Villanova athletics department.

Men's and women's volleyball--Ball State chose Joel Walton as head coach. Walton has been an assistant with the program for eight seasons ... Stephanie Schleuder appointed head coach at Macalester to replace Bob Weiner, who assumed head coaching duties at Montana State-Northern. Schleuder most recently coached from 1982 to 1994 at Minnesota and has an overall collegiate record of 561-285, including stints with Alabama and Bemidji State ... Mercyhurst named Carrie Roberts head women's volleyball and softball coach. Roberts has served as head volleyball coach at Hiram and as head softball coach at Ithaca and on the high-school level.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants--Christy Peters accepted the position of assistant coach at Connecticut. Peters was an assistant volleyball coach at Northwestern during the 1997-98 academic year ... Purdue added John Wilder as second assistant coach. Most recently, Wilder served as an assistant at Morningside ... Amy Iannoccari announced as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. For the past year, Iannoccari has been playing in France with the French National 2 League.

Wrestling--Merchant Marine hired Tim Alger to serve as head wrestling coach, self-defense instructor and assistant strength and conditioning coach. Alger spent last season as assistant wrestling coach at James Madison.

STAFF

Athletic trainer--Texas Woman's selected Jill Craig as head athletic trainer. Craig succeeds Kathy Dieringer, who resigned to become a clinic administrator at Matrix Rehabilitation.

Assistant athletic trainer--Army hired Adam Kovalski as assistant athletic trainer.

Athletic business manager--Jeffrey Pritsker assumed athletics business manager duties at South Dakota State, replacing Jay Parker, who resigned. Most recently, Pritsker worked in the Florida State business office.

Athletic communications--Cornell named Patrick Gillespie director of athletics communications to replace Dave Wohlhueter. A member of the Cornell staff since 1992, Gillespie has been associate director of sports communications since 1997.

Development--Washington appointed Ken Winstead associate director for fund development and external affairs. Winstead, who has been director of development for USA Wrestling for the past year, succeeds Bob Stull, who became director of athletics at UTEP.

Marketing--Garner Roberts, sports information director at Abilene Christian for 25 years, appointed senior marketing advisor at the school. Roberts will retain his sports information duties until a replacement is selected.

Recruiting and retention--Whittier transferred Doug Locker to director of athletics recruitment and retention from director of admissions. Locker, who was a 19-year member of the admissions office, will continue as head men's lacrosse coach, a post he has held for nine years.

Sports information--Texas Lutheran chose Tim Clark as sports information/ sports marketing director ... Washington (Missouri) promoted Kevin Bergquist to director of sports information, succeeding Mike Wolf, who resigned to become sports information director at Miami (Ohio). Bergquist has been assistant sports information director for the past two years ... Nico Karagosian assumed sports information director responsibilities at Hamilton, effective February 4. Before coming to Hamilton, Karagosian served as assistant sports information director at Hobart and William Smith ... Gregg Gebhard accepted the position of sports information director at Pfeiffer.

Sports information assistant--Campbell added Nicole Inman as assistant sports information director. For the past two years, Inman has been a graduate assistant with the school's sports information office.

Strength and conditioning--Scott Swanson hired as strength and conditioning coach at Army, succeeding Tim Swanger, who became head strength and conditioning coach at Cincinnati. Swanson spent last season as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Stanford.

Strength and conditioning assistants--Daryl Lawrence and Scott Webster appointed assistants at Army.

CONFERENCES

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selected Steve Murray as commissioner. Murray, who has been acting commissioner since July 1997, was the conference's first sports information director and was promoted to assistant commissioner for media relations two years ago.

Blenda J. Wilson, president at Cal State Northridge, elected chair of the Big Sky Conference President's Council. Montana State faculty athletics representative Robert Oakberg elected chair of the faculty athletics council and John Johnson, Weber State athletics director, named chair of joint athletics council.

The Centennial Conference chose Robert H. Chambers, president at Western Maryland, chair of the Centennial Conference Presidents' Council for the 1998-99 academic year, replacing Al Bloom, president at Swarthmore. John Strassburger, Ursinus president, and Nancy Vickers, Bryn Mawr president, were selected for the conference executive committee with Chambers. Patricia Epps, associate director of athletics at Franklin and Marshall, appointed chair of the conference's administrative delegates, the conference's athletics directors' governing body.

The Sun Belt Conference named the following to two-year terms on the conference's executive committee: Gary Ransdell, president at Western Kentucky, president; Gregory O'Brien, chancellor at New Orleans, vice-president; J. Les Wyatt, president at Arkansas State, past president; Nelson Schexnayder, Southern Louisiana, chair of athletics directors; Van Compton, Arkansas-Little Rock, chair of senior woman administrators; and Dale Adams, South Alabama, chair of faculty athletics representatives.


NOTABLES

Senior Wisconsin-Oshkosh distance runner Tiffany Ebensperger captured the Honda Award as NCAA Division III Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Ebensperger became the first three-time women's cross country conference champion after winning the 1998 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. A GTE first-team Academic All-American, Ebensperger was named the cross country coaches association's Division III Female Athlete of the Year.

Rhonda Faehn-Tetreault, two-year assistant gymnastics coach at Maryland, netted Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women.

The 1998 Division II Jack Nicklaus College Player of the Year Award presented by Rolex and Nicklaus Golf Equipment went to Orjan Larsen. A sophomore at West Florida, Larsen won three tournaments during the season and captured individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships in addition to being named Gulf South Conference Player of the Year.

James McLean, freshman at Minnesota and Jennifer Rosales, freshman at Southern California, were named Rolex College Golfers of the Month for May. Both McLean and Rosales won individual medalist honors at the NCAA championships.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the following players and coaches as the 1998 Divisional Class of Inductees for the College Football Hall of Fame: Jeff Bentrim, North Dakota State, 1983-86; Kenneth Dement, Southeast Missouri State, 1951-54; Tom Deery, Widener, 1979-81; Donnie Shell, South Carolina State, 1970-73; Rich Ritchie, Texas A&I, 1973-76; Larry Pugh, Westminster (Pennsylvania), 1961-64; Chuck Klausing, Indiana (Pennsylvania), 1964-69, and Carnegie Mellon, 1976-85; Bob Reade, Augustana (Illinois), 1979-94; and Ad Rutschman, Linfield, 1968-91.


DEATHS

Jason McCray, a defensive end at Navy, collapsed while playing basketball and died June 5. He was 20. McCray, who was on a summer cruise at the time of his death, had 17 tackles in 10 games during his freshman season.
