California (Pennsylvania) wins second straight II softball title

California (Pennsylvania) won its second straight Division II Women's Softball Championship by defeating Barry, 2-1, on May 18 in Pensacola, Florida.

The Vulcans' championship-game victory was their second win over Barry in the tournament. They posted a 5-0 win in Game 11.

Barry held the lead in the fourth inning of the title game after shortstop Cindi Perantoni doubled and crossed home plate on a single by Tanaye Goehring.

But Vulcans catcher Dana Boyer doubled and scored on Kate Vaughan's two-out single in the fifth. Lith Webb scored the game-winning run in the sixth after walking, stealing second and coming home on a single by Nikki Fiedler.

Vulcans pitcher Danielle Penner (46-4) tossed for seven innings for the victory. She permitted only five hits, two walks and struck out two.

"As far as pressure, it was more personal pressure," Penner said of enduring championship expectations. "I think a lot of people didn't expect to see us up here, so there wasn't a lot said about California. Being here last year and having won it, we all knew what it meant to win. So that was our personal pressure."

Vulcans head coach Rick Bertagnolli acknowledged his team's repeat victory.

"Winning two, the first one's very special, and the second one's the same way but with different kids," he said. "We had different student-athletes, and we're going to have different ones next year. This one's very special in my heart, especially the way things were done this year.

"We started out ranked number one in the preseason, then right away, before we could turn around, we were ninth. Going into our conference tournament, we lost the first game, and we came back and won that. That's kind of typical of the teams I've been fortunate enough to coach, that we didn't start very well, but at the end of the season, you really don't want to play us."

Stephanie Caldwell (19-10) of the Buccaneers took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.

California (Pennsylvania) finished a 47-7 season while Barry concluded a 44-17 campaign.

Penner, Boyer and Webb all were selected to the all-tournament team. Others chosen were Perantoni, Stephanie Caldwell and Jenny Bouchard of Barry; Ramona Romero and Michelle Tabarez of Cal State Bakersfield; Casey Munger and Nadine Crowl of Ferris State; Darcie Berry of Nebraska-Kearney; and Karen White of Coker.
