Wrestling Committee will hold second satellite rules clinic

The NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee's second annual satellite rules clinic telecast will air live Sunday, September 13, starting at 11 a.m. Central Daylight Time.

This telecast, which will be interactive via telephone, will last approximately two and one-half hours.

In addition to the telecast, plans also call for two in-person clinics. The first clinic will be at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) convention August 15 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The second in-person date and site has not yet been determined, but it is likely that it will be early in the fall and conducted in the Chicago area.

Attendance requirements have changed for the upcoming season. All members of each coaching staff in all divisions are required to attend or view a clinic. Previously, only one full-time member of each Division I coaching staff was required to attend. The reason for the stricter requirements is the need for everyone involved to understand completely the new rules on weigh-ins and weight loss. As always, referees who wish to be eligible to officiate at any of the NCAA championships or NCAA-sponsored regional qualifiers must attend a clinic.

The attendance requirement can be fulfilled by completing one of the following: (1) attending one of the two live in-person clinics and turning in a registration card; (2) attending an airing of the satellite telecast September 13 at one of the official sites and turning in a registration card; or (3) viewing the satellite telecast on September 13 at a site other than one of those listed and registering attendance by calling a toll-free number that will be shown on the screen during the telecast.

The tentative sites include Cornell University; University of Colorado, Colorado Springs; George Mason University; Lehigh University; University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Northwestern University; Ohio State University; University of Oklahoma; University of Pittsburgh; St. Thomas University (Minnesota); Stanford University; and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Sites in Iowa and Nebraska will be added.

Coaches or referees who believe their area is not represented in this list and who wish to host a viewing of the satellite telecast may contact Marty Benson at the NCAA national office before May 31.

Coaches and referees will be notified by mail as sites are confirmed and more details about the rules clinics become available.
