Stein to head women's hoops at Missouri

Missouri named Cindy Stein as head women's basketball coach. She succeeds Joann Rutherford, who resigned after compiling 422 wins in 23 years at the helm.

Stein comes to Missouri from Emporia State, where she served as head coach for three years. Last season, Stein's squad set a Division II record by reeling off 33 straight wins before falling in the title game of the NCAA Division II championship. Stein has worked as an assistant at Illinois, Bradley, Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio).

Collegiately, Stein played two years at Illinois Central. She captured all-America honors as a basketball and softball player there before moving on to Illinois, where she was a two-year starter.

Stein earned an associate's degree from Illinois Central, a bachelor's in physical education from Illinois and a master's in physical education and athletics administration from Central Michigan.

Emporia State selected assistant coach Brandon Schneider to succeed Stein.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Peter Bothner named director of athletics and physical education at Nazareth ... Miami (Ohio) hired Joel Maturi as athletics director. Maturi has been athletics director at Denver for the past two years ... William S. Husak, senior associate athletics director at Long Beach State, named athletics director at Loyola Marymount ... Frank Cignetti stepped down as athletics director at Indiana (Pennsylvania). Cignetti will retain his position as head football coach and will assume duties as an assistant to the athletics director. Associate athletics director Frank Condino will serve as interim athletics director ... Oklahoma announced the hiring of Joe Castiglione to replace Steve Owens, who resigned for personal reasons. Castiglione has been athletics director at Missouri since 1994.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Dave Fischer and Suzanne Sanregret promoted to assistant athletics directors at Michigan Tech. Fischer has been director of athletics communications and promotions and Sanregret was athletics business manager and compliance coordinator.

COACHES

Baseball--Ramapo named Dan Palumbo as head coach to replace Ian Gillule. Palumbo, a former scout with the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball who has previously coached a Hofstra, Long Island and Stevens Tech, will continue to supervise sports promotions and events at the school.

Men's basketball--Oregon State extended the contract of head coach Eddie Payne through the 2000-01 academic year. Payne has guided the program for the past three years ... Delaware Valley appointed Bill Dooley has head coach succeeding Dave Duda, who resigned to assume a similar position at Widener. Dooley most recently coached at Richmond, where he served as assistant and head coach.

Men's basketball assistants--Pete Herrmann, Ken McDonald and Kevin Baggett hired as assistant coaches at Western Kentucky. Herrmann was an aide at Virginia and McDonald has worked at Clemson for the past four years. Baggett served as an assistant at Coastal Carolina for two years.

Women's basketball--Wes Moore accepted the position of head coach at Chattanooga. Moore, who replaces Craig Parrott, has been head coach at Francis Marion for three seasons where he compiled a 69-20 record ... Bellarmine named David Smith as head coach. Smith coached at Shippensburg for eight seasons and succeeds Charlie Just, who assumed head coaching duties for the men's squad ... Melissa Wiggins named head basketball coach at Randolph-Macon Woman's.

Women's basketball assistants--Indiana added Renee Reed as an assistant basketball coach. Reed is one of two successors for Susan Dixon and Malisa Bryant ... Regis (Colorado) assistant coach Brenda Berriman resigned to assume a similar post at Mesa State. Berriman, who joined the Regis staff before the 1996-97 season, also coordinated compliance and eligibility at the school ... Kate Abromovitch accepted the position of assistant basket-ball coach at Fordham ... Old Dominion added Allison Greene as a full-time assistant coach after serving as a part-time assistant for the last seven years. Greene replaces Cindy Fisher, who became head coach at Wyoming. The school also selected Stacy Himes as a part-time coach. Himes is a 1997 graduate of Old Dominion and has been a part-time coach at Virginia Wesleyan.

Football assistant--Brent Pry appoint-ed defensive line coach at Western Carolina. Pry, who has been a defensive line assistant coach at Virginia Tech for three years, replaces Ted Roof, who resigned to become linebackers coach at Georgia Tech.

Women's golf--Augustana (Illinois) named D'Anne Gross head coach, succeeding JoAnn Conklin. Gross was an assistant golf coach at New Mexico for the 1996-97 season and has coached boys and girls on the high-school and junior college level ... Florida's Kim Haddow resigned as head coach.

Men's soccer--Duquesne added Wade Jean as head men's soccer coach.

Men's soccer assistant--Paul McDonough hired as assistant coach at Wake Forest. For the past three seasons, McDonough has been an assistant coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg.

Women's squash--Mark Talbott named head coach at Yale. Talbott, who succeeds 18-year veteran coach Dale Walker, was the world's top ranked professional squash player for 12 seasons and currently is a member of the No. 1 doubles team.

Men's and women's volleyball--Martin Stufflebeam appointed head volleyball coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Stufflebeam has been an assistant coach at St. John's (New York) for two seasons ... Randolph-Macon Woman's named Sandra Collins head volleyball coach. Collins, who most recently coached volleyball at Russell Sage, also will teach in the physical education department and serve as head softball coach.

Women's volleyball assistant--Montana promoted Colleen Frohlich to lead assistant coach. Frohlich, who also will serve as recruiting coordinator, succeeds Mary Klueber.

STAFF

Athletic trainer--Kathy Dieringer resigned as head athletic trainer at Texas Woman's to assume a position with Matrix Rehabilitation of Denton (Texas) as a clinic administrator. Dieringer had been with the school for 11 years.

Director of compliance--Saint Louis named David Zwart director of compliance. Zwart has held various positions within the school's athletics department for the past three and a half years.

Marketing and promotions--Carolyn Pendergast selected as director of marketing and promotions at California. Pendergast, who succeeds Kelli Wilder, was director of special events at Arizona State.

Marketing and promotions assistant--Wake Forest hired Dan Hauser as assistant director of marketing and promotions after fulfilling the responsibilities of assistant director of marketing at New Mexico for the past two years.

Media relations--Pittsburgh promot-ed assistant director of media relations E. J. Borghetti to director of media rela-tions. Borghetti succeeds Ron Wahl, who accepted a position with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League.

ASSOCIATIONS

Michael Mistler, chief financial officer at North Carolina-Charlotte, accepted the position of assistant director/director of operations at the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission.

NATIONAL OFFICE

John Morris selected as membership services representative. Morris most recently worked as a compliance assistant at Vanderbilt.


NOTABLES

Jack Lengyel, athletics director at Navy, was named recipient of the Akron Alumni Honor Award, the highest honor presented to an alumnus by the University of Akron Alumni Association.

Twenty-five year veteran Nebraska coach Tom Osborne was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. The following 12 players also were selected: Al Brosky, Illinois; Brad Budde, Southern California; Bill Fralic, Pittsburgh; Randy Gradishar, Ohio State; Bo Jackson, Auburn; Mel Long, Toledo; Jim McMahon, Brigham Young; Jerry Rhome, SMU and Tulsa; Jim Ritcher, North Carolina State; Johnny Roland, Missouri; Alex Sarkisian, Northwestern; and Bill Stanfill, Georgia. Honorees will be inducted at the National Football Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner in New York December 8.

The following five former student-athletes will be inducted into the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame June 11: Leigh Curl, Connecticut; Bernie Kosar, Miami (Florida); Jack Mildren, Oklahoma; Jack Sikma, Illinois Wesleyan; and Marv Levy, Coe. Curl was a four-year starter on the basketball team and Kosar helped Miami win its first national championship and went on to play professionally in the National Football League for 13 years. Mildren was an all-America quarterback and MVP of the 1972 Sugar Bowl and Sikma was a seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star. As a coach in the National Football League, Levy guided the Kansas City Chiefs for five years and led the Buffalo Bills to four Super Bowls in 12 seasons.


DEATHS

The first coach in Penn State's women's intercollegiate athletics program, Pat Seni, died April 22 in State College, Pennsylvania. Seni coached field hockey, Penn State's first women's sport, in addition to coaching the women's tennis team from 1966-68. Seni, who was an assistant professor in the college of health, physical education and recreation, retired July 1, 1993.

Former Clemson football player Harry Olszewski died of a heart attack recently. He was 51. Olszewski was an all-Atlantic Coast Conference offensive guard in 1966 and 1967. He started all 30 games of his collegiate career and eventually became a third-round draft pick of the National Football League's Cleveland Browns in 1968. A member of the Clemson Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, he is remembered for snatching a midair fumble and running 12 yards for a touchdown during a 1966 game against South Carolina. No other Clemson offensive lineman has scampered for a touchdown since Olszewski.
