INSURANCE

New policy in place for NCAA catastrophic insurance program

A new catastrophic-injury insurance policy that will provide continued protection for student-athletes and other individuals at member institutions has been approved by the NCAA Executive Committee.

The program will continue to provide benefits for catastrophic injuries, as well as for serious noncatastrophic injuries. The new carrier will be Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company.

The deductible will be $50,000, an increase of $25,000 from the current policy. To provide institutions with an option on addressing the increase in the deductible, Mutual of Omaha is making available "gap coverage" ranging in price from $1,975 to $4,975, depending on the institution's division affiliation and whether it sponsors football.

The Association's annual premium for the catastrophic-injury insurance policy will increase from approximately $3.6 million to $7.4 million.

DIVISION II

Presidents move toward ending geographic-proximity policy

The Division II Presidents Council approved Management Council actions involving championships policies, including the concept of eliminating the geographic-proximity policy.

The Presidents Council agreed to support the concept of eliminating the geographic-proximity policy, pending further review of travel costs and other budgetary implications.

Elimination of the policy could permit a No. 1-seeded team that meets other criteria to serve as a host in preliminary rounds of a championship, regardless of the location of its campus.

The Presidents Council agreed that the Division II Championships Committee should work with the Division II Budget and Finance Committee to obtain more detailed information about the potential budgetary impact of elimination of the policy.

DIVISION III

Presidents defeat proposal for Division III bowl games

The Division III Presidents Council has defeated a recommendation to expand the football postseason by adding bowl games.

The Division III Management Council had recommended retaining the 16-team national-championship format while adding the opportunity for eight teams to play in four bowl games.

The Presidents Council voted to retain the current football championship structure for the 1998-99 season, while indicating that it would be open to other options in the future.

STAFF

Top NCAA staff position to be known as 'president'

The NCAA Executive Committee has approved a change in title for the Association's top staff position, eliminating the title "executive director" and replacing it with "president."

The title change was approved at the April 22 meeting of the NCAA Executive Committee in Indianapolis.

Until restructuring, the NCAA president was a representative of either a member institution or conference. The title change for the executive director will better reflect that individual's relationship with the Executive Committee.
