Wrestling Committee picks championship sites

The NCAA Wrestling Committee has selected Iowa City, Iowa; Albany, New York; and Kansas City, Missouri, as the sites it will recommend for the 2001, 2002, and 2003 Division I Wrestling Championships, respectively.

The Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet will be asked to approve the recommendations at its summer meeting.

The Division I Wrestling Championships will return to Iowa City March 15-17, 2001. The University of Iowa last hosted the championships at Hawkeye Arena (capacity 15,000) in 1995.

Albany, the recommended site for the 2002 Division I Wrestling Championships, will be a first-time site. Pepsi Arena has a capacity of 14,300. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Siena College and Rider University will serve as hosts for the March 14-16 event.

The Division I Wrestling Championships will go to Kansas City for the first time in 2003. Kemper Arena will be configured for a capacity of 17,500. The Greater Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation will be the sponsoring agency, with the Big 12 Conference serving as host. The dates of competition are March 20-22.

Other sites considered were the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the James H. Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. The 1999 Division I Wrestling Championships will be held at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania. The University of Missouri, Columbia, will host the 2000 championships at The Kiel Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
