DePauw selects women's tennis coach

DePauw tapped Beth Todd as its new head women's tennis coach, succeeding David Whetzel, who resigned to pursue other career opportunities.

Todd most recently served as assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Colgate. Last spring, she coached boys' tennis at Cincinnati Country Day School. In addition, Todd worked as an assistant professional at the Cincinnati Country Club for four summers. As the tennis professional at the Racquet Club at Harper's Point, she coordinated and taught clinics for new adults and juniors. She also established a league for upper level adult players, and served as assistant coordinator of ATP Smash Tennis, a promotional tennis event.

As a collegian at Mary Washington, Todd appeared in four Division III Women's Tennis Championships. She also was recognized as the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1995.

Todd is a 1995 graduate of Mary Washington, where she earned a bachelor's degree in American studies.


GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Michael A. MacDowell selected as president at Misericordia, succeeding Albert Anderson, who plans to retire, effec-tive June 1998. MacDowell has been vice-president of institutional advancement at Hartwick.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Saginaw Valley State announced the retirement of Bob Becker, effective December 31. In addition to serving as athletics director for the past 18 years, Becker, who has been with the school since 1969, has coached golf and softball. He is a member of the Division II Management Council and Division II Championships Committee ... Mark Walsh, associate athletics director and head baseball coach at Aurora, appointed director of athletics at the school. Walsh replaces Rita Yerkes, who is stepping down to focus on responsibilities as dean of the school of physical education, recreation administration and athletics as well as associate dean of George Williams College of the university ... Drexel announced the resignation of athletics director Louis Marciani. Eric Zillmer named as interim athletics director ... Margaret Strait named athletics director at St. Lawrence, effective July 1.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Boston College promoted John Kane to senior associate athletics director, Jim O'Neill to associate athletics director for ticket operations and Susan Mosher to associate athletics director for external operations. Kane has been assistant athletics director for operations for the past five years and O'Neill has been assistant athletics director since 1992. For the past seven years, Mosher has fulfilled duties as assistant athletics director for marketing. The school also expanded the duties of associate athletics directors Tom Peters and Lynn Holleran. Peters will be responsible for additional sports and will work as liaison to numerous athletics-related groups while Holleran will oversee other sports programs in addition to serving as senior woman administrator.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Kim Hollins promoted to assistant athletics director for compliance at Boston College. Hollins has served as compliance coordinator since 1994.

COACHES

Baseball--Marshall released head coach Craig Antush.

Men's basketball--Mississippi named Roderick Barnes as head coach. Barnes succeeds Rob Evans, who assumed the head coaching post at Arizona State. Barnes has been an assistant with the team since 1993 ... Bobby Lutz named head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte. Lutz, who has been an assistant coach with the program since 1995, replaces Melvin Watkins, who resigned to become head coach at Texas A&M ... Duquesne selected assistant coach Darelle Porter as head coach, succeeding Scott Edgar, who was released ... Niagara appointed Joe Mihalich head coach. Mihalich, a 17-year assistant at La Salle, replaces Jack Armstrong, who was released ... Mel Hankinson tapped as head coach at Liberty. He succeeds interim head coach Randy Dunton. Hankinson has been an assistant coach at West Virginia for five years ... Rivier named Dave Morissette head basketball coach. Morissette, most recently assistant athletics director and head men's basketball and women's softball coach at Notre Dame College, assumes head coaching responsibilities from Jim Domoracki, who accepted a position as athletics director at Wellington (Ohio) School. Morissette also will fulfill head cross country coaching duties ... Mercyhurst extended by two years the contract of head coach Karl Fogel. In three years at the helm, Fogel has compiled a 44-36 record ... Paul Brazeau, head coach at Hartford, awarded a contract extension through 2001.

Men's basketball assistants--Manhattan appointed Marc Turner as full-time assistant coach ... Louis Wilson selected as an assistant at Idaho State. For the past six seasons, Wilson has coached at Southern Utah ... Iona tapped Craig Holcomb as men's associate coach and Tony Childs as assistant coach ... UC Irvine assistant coach Cameron Dollar named head coach at Southern California College.

Women's basketball--John Hershey, head coach and assistant athletics director at Macalester, resigned, effective May 31. The school appointed two-year assistant coach Mary Orsted to succeed Hershey, who had been head coach since 1986 ... Pittsburgh selected Traci Waites as head coach. She has been on the staff at Arizona for the past four years and served as associate head coach for the past two years.

Women's basketball assistants--Emily Bauer, Malisa Bryant and Rhonda Rice hired as assistants at Northern Illinois. Bauer has served in a similar capacity at Wisconsin-Green Bay for the past five years and Bryant has been a restricted-earnings coach for two years at Indiana. Rice, who has worked as a restricted-earnings coach at Seton Hall, will fulfill similar duties at Northern Illinois ... Allison Greene accepted the position of assistant basketball coach at Old Dominion.

Football--Mercyhurst extended the contract of Joe Kimball by two years. Kimball has been head coach for six years.

Football assistants--Bucknell named Greg Willig as receivers coach. Willig coached quarterbacks and assisted the offensive coordinator at Duke last season. Willig succeeds Gary Campbell, who accepted a position in private sales ... Florida Atlantic announced the hiring of Howard Schnellenberger as special assistant to the director of athletics for football operations, effective May 1. Schnellenberger, who is a former collegiate and National Football League coach, will be responsible for development, implementation of fund-raising, marketing and public relations for the school's inaugural football squad, scheduled to begin competition in 2001 ... Furman promoted Julius Dixon to assistant defensive line coach.

Women's golf--Butler announced the hiring of Janet Davis as head coach of the women's varsity team, scheduled to begin competition next fall. Davis currently serves as cohead professional at Prestwick Country Club (Indiana).

Men's lacrosse--Mercyhurst announced the selection of Vinnie Lang as head men's coach, replacing Pete Ginnegar, who resigned. Lang has been an assistant with the school since last September.

Men's soccer--John Rootes accepted the head coaching position at Clayton. Rootes closes a 10-year stint at New Hampshire College, where he built a 169-30-10 record ... Three-year Marietta head coach Chris Przemieniecki accepted an assistant men's soccer coaching position with Bowling Green.

Men's soccer assistant--Rob Elliott tapped to coach at his alma mater, Cornell. Elliott, a 1997 graduate, is the school's all-time soccer assists leader and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro Division I men's all-America second team.

Women's soccer--Beth Field named as interim head coach for the 1998 season at Plymouth State. Field, an assistant coach at the school since 1995, succeeds Marti Kingsley, who resigned ... Ozarks (Arkansas) appointed Aaron Metzger as head women's coach. Metzger has been assistant coach for the men's and women's teams for the past year. He replaces Scott Placek, head men's and women's coach last year, who will continue as head men's coach.

Women's softball--Lori Hendon Manning accepted the position of head softball coach at Anderson (South Carolina).

Women's softball assistant--Southeastern Louisiana hired Christine Zboril as assistant coach. Most recently, Zboril has been the assistant varsity softball coach at La Habra (California) High School.

Men's and women's swimming--Brian Dalton tapped as head men's and women's swimming coach at St. Francis (New York). Dalton, a 1997 graduate of Queens (New York), has been a boys' and girls' swimming coach on the prep-school level for the past four years ... Tom Johnson named swimming coach at Wyoming.

Men's and women's volleyball--Cal State Northridge selected Jeff Campbell as head coach. Campbell, who has been an assistant with the program since 1991, served most recently in an interim capacity following the resignation of head coach John Price. Campbell also has been head women's volleyball coach at Occidental for the past five seasons ... Anderson hired Jennifer Wilder as head women's volleyball coach ... Karen Seremet named women's volleyball coach at North Central.

Wrestling--Iowa announced that head coach Dan Gable will not return next season, but will remain as assistant to the director of athletics. Gable, a 1972 Olympic gold medalist who took a sabbtical from coaching last season, has been head coach since 1977 and has guided his squads to 21 straight Big Ten Conference championships.

STAFF

Operations and facilities director--Wake Forest named Davis Whitfield director of athletics operations and facility management. Since 1995, Whitfield has been assistant athletics director of athletics operations and facilities management at Campbell.

Sports information director--Cory Rogers tapped as sports information director at Troy State.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Aaron Hillmann assumed assistant strength and conditioning coach responsibilities for football.

CONFERENCES

The Sun Belt Conference announced that Florida International will join the conference, effective July 1.

MISCELLANEOUS

Calvin Symons, director of the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse, has resigned, effective July 1.


NOTABLES

The "Babe Didrickson Zaharias Sports Institute will address opportunities and issues for women in sports in a conference, "The Emerging Role of Women in Public Sphere of Sports," presented by Rochester's Susan B. Anthony University Center. The conference is scheduled for May 1 and 2 at Rochester and session topics range from integrating sports and fitness into daily activities to examining women's affect on leadership styles in sports.
