Southern Conference names commissioner

Alfred White has been named the sixth commissioner of the Southern Conference. White succeeds Wright Waters, who resigned to pursue a private sports marketing opportunity.

In 15 years with the NCAA, White has served in numerous capacities. Most recently, as director of corporate marketing, he has been responsible for developing and maintaining corporate contacts for the NCAA. Prior to assuming his current position in 1997, White was director of promotions from 1988 to 1997. He also has served as assistant director of communications from 1983 to 1987 and then as associate director of communications.

Before joining the NCAA, White served for three years as assistant sports information director at his alma mater, Texas Tech, where he earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast media operations in 1979.


GENERAL

Walter B. Roettger appointed president at Lyon. Roettger has been vice-president and dean of the faculty at Westminster (Missouri).

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

High Point selected Woody Gibson as director of athletics ... Texas-Pan Ameri-can hired William Weidner as athletics director. Weidner has been serving in the same capacity at Ashland for the past three years.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Wichita State announced the resignation of Casey Scott, effective April 9. A member of the athletics staff since 1985, Scott had worked as associate athletics director since February and plans to become associate athletics director at Colorado State ... Kristin L. Burns accepted the position of associate athletics director at Rhode Island ... Pratt announced the appointment of Dave Adebanjo to associate director of athletics ... Kyle Wills promoted to associate athletics director at Elon.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Trip Durham and David Hibbard selected as assistant athletics directors at Elon ... Bob Krimmel named assistant athletics director at Penn State, succeeding Rich Lucas, who retired. Krimmel has been head women's swimming coach at the school since 1981.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Cal State Fullerton renewed the contract of head coach Bob Hawking ... Mark Gottfried selected as head coach at Alabama, replacing David Hobbs, who was released. Gottfried has been head coach at Murray State, which named named Tevester Anderson as Gottfried's successor. Anderson has been an assistant coach at the school for three years ... UC Santa Barbara appointed Bob Williams head coach. Williams, who guided UC Davis to the Division II championship this year, replaces Jerry Pimm, who accepted a position in the school's athletics administration office ... Michael Hopkins, head coach at Coastal Carolina, resigned after four seasons ... Pete Gillen accepted the head coaching position at Virginia after serving as head coach at Providence for four years. Gillen succeeds Jeff Jones, who resigned after eight seasons ... Texas A&M named Melvin Watkins as head coach. Watkins, who served as head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte for the past two years, replaces Tony Barone, who resigned ... Akron extended the contract of head coach Dan Hipsher by three years through 2005 ... Kevin Schlagel appointed head coach at St. Cloud State after serving as interim coach during the 1997-98 season. Schlagel, an assistant coach at the school since 1980, succeeds Butch Raymond, who resigned ... New Orleans head coach Bill Gleason resigned after four seasons.

Men's basketball assistants--Clemson named Ricky Stokes associate coach and Ed Kohtala restricted-earnings coach ... Rick Callahan promoted to associate head coach and Barclay Radebaugh appointed assistant coach at South Carolina.

Women's basketball--Amy Taylor promoted to head coach at Haverford, effective July 1. Taylor was interim head coach ... Cal Poly San Luis Obispo promoted interim head coach Faith Mimnaugh to head coach. Mimnaugh has been an assistant with the school since 1996 ... Carol Hammerle hired as head coach at Northern Illinois. Hammerle, head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay for the past 25 years, replaces Liz Galloway-McQuitter, who resigned after four years.

Men's and women's cross country--Jim Phemister resigned as head women's cross country coach and assistant women's track coach at Washington and Lee ... Thomas More tapped Mike Moyer as head men's and women's cross country coach. Moyer most recently has served as head track and field coach and assistant wrestling coach on the high-school level.

Men's and women's cross country assistant--Texas-Pan American announced the hiring of Michael Bartolina as assistant men's and women's cross country coach. Bartolina also will work as assistant men's and women's track coach.

Field hockey--Pam Bustin resigned at Hofstra to serve as head field hockey coach at Louisville ... Anne Livezey promoted to head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Haverford, effective July 1, after working as interim head coach in both programs. Livezey was an assistant at the school for the past two years ... Montclair State's Andie Whitcomb resigned as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach to accept a field hockey and softball coaching post at Mount Holyoke.

Football--Greenville tapped Rob Harley as head coach. Harley has been at Eastern Oregon ... Dave Flynn appointed head coach at Fitchburg State.

Football assistants--Mark Nelson selected as assistant head football coach at Valdosta State. The school also named Matt Dunigan administrative assistant in charge of academics and eligibility and Scott Chandler as high-school liaison ... Massachusetts added Dave Hoover as recruting coordinator and offensive line coach. Hoover has been offensive line coach at Eastern Michigan for the past three seasons ... Carleton appointed Michael Barnes as linebackers coach. For the last four seasons, Barnes has served as a head football coach on the high-school level ... Darrell Funk, five-year assistant coach at Mesa State, accepted the position of offensive line coach at Rhode Island. Last season, Funk handled assistant head coach and offensive coordinator responsibilities.

Idaho State promoted linebackers coach John Ely to defensive coordinator. Tight ends coach Chris Zermeno will coach wide receivers and student assistant Lance Anderson is slated to assist in coaching tight ends after working with running backs last season. The school also added Mike Jones as recruiting coordinator/defensive line coach, Deryl Henderson as defensive line assistant and Artie Holmes as defensive backs coach. Jones was strength and conditioning coach at Nevada for five years and Henderson was defensive line coach at Weber State for two years ... Walter Highsmith released as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida A&M ... Todd Throckmorton, assistant coach at San Jose State, given expanded responsibilities as defensive coordinator. Throckmorton, who replaces Ron Ponciano, will continue to coach inside linebackers. San Jose also added Barry Sacks and Jesse Williams as defensive line coaches and special teams coordinators. Last season, Sacks was defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator at Adams State. Williams has been defensive line coach and special teams coordinator at Holy Cross for the last two years.

Denny Schuler selected as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Northern Iowa. Schuler has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Oregon State for two seasons and replaces Tom Mason, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Nevada ... Greenville hired David Armstrong as defensive coordinator ... Tim Beckman tapped as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Bowling Green, replacing Steve Spagnuolo, who accepted a coaching post with NFL Europe. Beckman was defensive coordinator in charge of the secondary at Elon for two years ... Western Kentucky announced the selection of Cap Boso as quarterbacks and fullbacks coach. In three years at Southern Illinois, Boso, a former player in the National Football League, has coached running backs, tight ends, tackles and the offensive line in addition to serving as special-teams coordinator ... South Carolina assistant coach John Reaves named offensive coordinator at Cornell. Reaves, who will coach quarterbacks and wide receivers, replaces Denison's Bill Wentworth, who, for personal reasons, reconsidered accepting the position.

Allegheny tapped Phil Willenbrock as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. Willenbrock, who served as offensive line coach at South Dakota last season, succeeds John Marzka ... John Gutekundst hired as defensive backs and kicking coach at Rhode Island. Gutekundst formerly coached at Minnesota ... Cincinnati added Jeff Filkovski as tight ends coach ... Ron Lambert accepted the position of defensive secondary coach at Eastern Illinois ... New Haven appointed Wally Dembowski defensive coordinator ... Brown named Paul Gorham offensive coordinator ... Steve Axman selected as quarterbacks coach at Minnesota ... Long Island-C. W. Post named Brian Hughes offensive coordinator and athletics department business manager, Frank Limanni running backs coach, Ten Tsirigotis wide receivers coach and Mike Henning quarterbacks coach ... Eastern Michigan hired Forrest Gregg Jr. as offensive line coach ... Vince Sinagra appointed defensive coordinator and Joe Woods defensive backs coach at Hofstra.

Men's golf--Cal State Chico tapped Denny Vargo as men's golf coach. Vargo has coached golf on the high-school level for the past 17 years. The Cal State Chico golf program is being reinstated after seven years.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Kate McIlvain tapped as assistant coach at Bucknell.

Men's soccer--Stetson appointed Sean Murphy as head coach.

Women's soccer--Rick Gutierrez selected as head coach at Adrian after serving as an assistant with the men's team for the past two seasons ... Pepperdine announced the resignation of Kenny Dale. In three years, Dale compiled a record of 25-29-4.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Northern Michigan will not renew the contract of head coach Karl Zueger. Zueger had been head coach since last summer ... Fran McDermid named interim head coach at Penn State, succeeding Bob Krimmel, who was appointed assistant athletics director at the school. McDermid has been an assistant coach at the school for two years.

Men's and women's tennis--Elon hired Tom Parham as director of tennis ... Illinois women's head coach Jennifer Roberts announced plans to retire, effective at the end of the season.

Men's and women's volleyball--Campbell women's head coach Jewel Lehman resigned ... South Carolina-Aiken named Noelle Hagenburger interim head coach. Hagenburger served as an assistant coach at the school last year.

Women's volleyball assistant--Todd Dagenais hired as assistant coach at Northern Michigan. During the 1997 season, Dagenais coached on the Michigan State women's volleyball staff.

Wrestling--Wes Roper resigned as head coach at Missouri.

STAFF

Marketing and promotions director--New Orleans' Alan Raphael resigned as director of marketing and promotions. Raphael, who had been with New Orleans since the fall of 1993, accepted a sales position with a radio station.

Sports communications director--Dave Wohlhueter stepped down as director of sports communications at Cornell after serving in the position for 21 years. Wohlhueter, who also served as director of sports communications at Bucknell and Ithaca, is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America and Ithaca College Sports Halls of Fame.

Sports medicine director--Martin Baker appointed director of sports medicine at Elon.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Donnetta Moorman hired as professional development program coordinator in education services. Moorman was director of employment administration and AA/EEO/ADA with the Indiana State Personnel Department.

CORRECTIONS

The name of Francis Marion player Jennifer Brabson was spelled incorrectly in a story on the Division II Women's Basketball Championship in the March 30 issue of The NCAA News.

A story on the Division I Wrestling Championships in the March 30 issue of The NCAA News erroneously reported that Mitch Clark of Ohio State has won two straight 177-pound weight class championships. Clark won this year's championship but was runner-up at 177 pounds last year.

The school where Kevin Sumlin was named assistant football coach was incorrectly listed in the NCAA Record section of the March 30 issue of The NCAA News. Sumlin accepted a position with Purdue.


NOTABLES

North Carolina women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance has been appointed to the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Advisory Board. Dorrance coached the United States' team to the first Women's World Cup title in 1991 and has guided North Carolina to 14 NCAA Division I women's championships.

Chamique Holdsclaw of Tennessee was tapped as Associated Press Player of the Year in women's basketball after leading 1998 Division I women's champion Tennesee in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and steals. Antawn Jamison of North Carolina was selected as Associated Press College Player of the Year in men's basketball. Jamison, who also captured Atlantic Coast Conference player-of-the-year honors, is only the second player from North Carolina to win the honor. The other player was Michael Jordan.

Tom Izzo and Pat Summitt were recognized as Associated Press Coaches of the Year for men's and women's college basketball. Izzo, three-year head coach at Michigan State, piloted the team to the Sweet 16 of the Division I championship this year. Summitt, who has guided teams to six national championships, including the 1998 Division I women's title, is currently ranked second in the NCAA in all-time victories with 662.

Central Oklahoma senior Joe Newton was recognized as Division II Player of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Newton established school single-season records for points scored, field goals made and attempted, free throws made and attempted, and steals. Newton also turned in four 40-point performances to tie a school mark.


DEATHS

Stacey Martin, a Dayton women's soccer player, collapsed during an exhibition game and died March 24. Martin, a three-year starter, was named second-team all-Atlantic-10 Conference last year and played on Dayton's conference championship team in 1996.
