Houchen named head coach at Citadel

Citadel tapped Bonnie Jo Houchen, assistant commandant for female assimilation, as head women's volleyball coach. Houchen is the first female athletics coach in the institution's 156-year history and is scheduled to lead the college's inaugural women's team sport.

A retired lieutenant colonel, Houchen joins Citadel after 17 years in the U.S. Air Force, where she served most recently as military aide to the vice-president.

As a student-athlete at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Houchen captured 12 varsity letters, including four in volleyball, four in outdoor track and field, three in basketball, and one in indoor track and field. A four-year starter in volleyball, she served as team captain for three seasons and was honored with Air Force's first most-valuable-player trophy in volleyball.

Citadel plans to field a women's volleyball team by fall 1998.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

David O'Toole selected as athletics director at Bellarmine, where the former faculty athletics representative has been serving as interim AD. O'Toole, a former member of the Division II Management Council, recently retired from teaching after 39 years ... Idaho appointed Mike Bohn athletics director. Since August 1995, Bohn has been associate athletics director for external operations at Colorado State ... Steve Owens, athletics director at Oklahoma, resigned after holding the position for 11Ž2 years .... Wheeling Jesuit head men's basketball coach Jay DeFruscio resigned to serve as the school's first full-time athletics director. Previously, the athletics director and men's basketball coach positions were combined.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORSOF ATHLETICS

Ohio State named Jim Smith associate athletics director for communications and marketing ... Oklahoma's senior associate athletics director, Bob King, resigned.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOROF ATHLETICS

Wheeling Jesuit's Wheeler Brown accepted expanded responsibilities as head men's basketball coach. Brown also will retain duties as compliance officer.

COACHES

Baseball--Steve Green resigned as coach at Purdue. Assistant coach Bob Shepherd was selected as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Men's basketball--C. Ronald Galbreath of Westminster (Pennsylvania) relinquished his head coaching position. Galbreath, who will continue at the school as professor of physical education and head men's cross country coach, is the most-victorious coach in school history with a 448-206 record in two stints as head coach from 1968 to 1969 and 1974 to 1998 ... Les Wothke resigned as coach at Winona State, effective June 30. In two terms as head coach over a total of 11 years, Wothke compiled a record of 183-110 to become the school's most-victorious coach ... Marywood's Edward Cosgrove was released as head basketball coach after seven years. Cosgrove will remain at the school as assistant to the athletics director with primary responsibilities for recruitment and academic coordination ... Clyde Drexler hired as head coach at his alma mater, Houston. Drexler, who is completing his playing career in the National Basketball Association, replaces Alvin Brooks, who was released ... Angelo State selected Joe Esposito as head men's basketball coach, succeeding Ed Messbarger, who is retiring at the end of July. Esposito, who has worked as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee State since 1995, also will teach in the kinesiology department ... Idaho State named Doug Oliver as head coach. Oliver has been an assistant coach at Stanford for the past 12 seasons ... Rick Stansbury named head coach at Mississippi State. Stansbury succeeds Richard Williams, who announced plans to retire, effective immediately, but will remain on the athletics staff until June 30 as advisor to the athletics director. In 12 seasons as head coach, Williams amassed a record of 191-163 and orchestrated the school's only Final Four appearance in 1996. Stansbury has been on the Mississippi State staff for the past eight years ... Fayetteville State rehired head basketball coach Rick Duckett. Duckett earlier was released by the school ... Steve Merfeld named head coach at Hampton after serving as interim coach. Merfeld worked as assistant coach prior to the departure of head coach Bryon Samuels to accept an assistant's position at Tennessee ... Howard released coach Mike McLeese. McLeese closed his tenure with a 31-78 record in four years.

Men's basketball assistant--New Mexico State added Thomas Trotter to its staff as an assistant coach. Trotter has been an assistant at Northeastern Illinois for the past 10 seasons.

Women's basketball--Pittsburgh head coach Kirk Bruce resigned to assume an administrative position in the school's athletics department ... Joann Rutherford, head coach at Missouri for 23 years, announced her retirement. Rutherford, only the second women's basketball coach in the program's history, netted 422 wins, four Big Eight Conference championships and five conference tournament crowns during her tenure ... Rhode Island College head coach Ken Hopkins resigned after 13 seasons. Hopkins closed his tenure with a 191-156 mark ... Marti Kingsley resigned after a three-year stint as women's basketball coach at Plymouth State. Kingsley, who served as senior woman administrator, also resigned as women's soccer coach.

Men's and women's cross country--Susquehanna hired Chris Straub as head coach, replacing Randi Kunkel, who will retain assistant coaching duties with the track and field program. Straub also carries additional responsibilities as assistant men's and women's track and field coach in charge of distance runners.

Football--Akron promoted three-year assistant Joe Palmisano to defensive coordinator. He succeeds David Snowball, who resigned. Palmisano was recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach in 1995 and 1996 before becoming associate head coach and secondary coach last season. Also, Bob Morris and Kevin Sumlin joined the Akron staff. Morris, most recently an assistant at Purdue, will serve as coordinator of the squad's pass defense. Sumlin joins the staff from Minnesota where he has been an assistant since 1993 ... Bruce Tall hired as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Harvard. Tall, who fulfilled similar duties at Northeastern for the past five seasons, replaces Mark Harriman, who assumed the head coaching post at Bates ... Holy Cross appointed Lee Hull linebackers coach and David Fipp part-time safeties coach. Hull succeeds Jesse Williams, who accepted a position at San Jose State. Hull returns to his alma mater after spending two seasons as head coach at South High School in Worcester, Massachusetts. Fipp is a 1997 graduate of Arizona, where he was a starter at free safety for two seasons ... Patrick Shurmur named offensive line coach in charge of guards and tackles at Stanford. Shurmur comes from Michigan State, where he has coached since 1990, and replaces Dave Borbely, who accepted a position at Notre Dame ... UNLV tapped Tim Drevno as running backs coach, succeeding Tommie Robinson, who left to accept a position with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League ... Cornell named Bill Wentworth offensive coordinator, Greg Gigantino defensive coordinator, Ron Prince offensive line coach, David Arnsparger defensive secondary coach and Peter Noyes director of football operations ... Paul Lounsberry named offensive coordinator, Alan Gooch selected as assistant head coach and Scott Fountain tapped as recruiting coordinator at Central Florida ... Russ Huesman appointed assistant coach at Memphis.

Men's and women's golf--North Carolina golf director and men's golf coach Devon Brouse hired as director of golf operations and head men's and women's golf coach at Purdue ... Pat Bell named head men's and women's golf coach at Howard Payne. Bell succeeds Mike Blackwell ... Westminster (Missouri) appointed "Ding" Vance and Tom Cremer as coaches of the men's and women's golf teams, respectively, replacing Dick Ault, who is recovering from back surgery ... Chris Marx tapped as head professional/general manager at the New Mexico State golf course. Marx, who replaces Ross Nettles, has been assistant professional at the school since 1995 in addition to serving as assistant men's golf coach.

Women's lacrosse--John Loncz accepted the position of head women's lacrosse coach at St. John Fisher for the program's inaugural season in spring 1999. Loncz also serves as head coach for the men's and women's cross country teams.

Men's soccer--Belmont Abbey selected Paul Stahlschmidt as head coach. Stahlschmidt has been assistant coach at Pfeiffer for the past two years and replaces Daniel Allen.

Men's soccer assistant--Chad Lagerwey appointed assistant coach at Georgetown, replacing Brian "Rudy" Fuller, who accepted the head men's coaching position at Pennsylvania. During the 1997 season, Lagerwey served as head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Davidson.

Women's soccer--Lock Haven tapped Elizabeth Driscoll as head coach. Driscoll was an assistant with the program last season ... Sandi Dickson selected as women's soccer coach at Bloomsburg.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Drexel named Helene Sisti assistant men's and women's track coach. Sisti also will fulfill assistant coaching duties with the cross country program.

Men's and women's volleyball--Kerry Major hired as head coach at Pennsylvania after working two years as head coach and one year as assistant coach at Alaska Anchorage ... Plymouth State promoted Mariann Hunter to head coach. Hunter, who served as assistant coach for the past two years, replaces John Garneau, who retired. Hunter also served as head coach of the school's men's volleyball club team in 1997 ... Ohio four-year assistant women's coach Kelli Myers named head coach at Connecticut. Myers replaces Ellen Crandall, who stepped down after the 1997 season ... Ron Shayka selected as interim head men's coach at George Mason. Shayka succeeds Uvaldo Acosta, who died February 12.

Women's volleyball assistant--Cory Solomon, volunteer assistant coach at Utah for the past two years, promoted to first assistant coach. Solomon succeeds Jil Thomason, who assumed an assistant coaching post at Denver.

STAFF

Development services director--Ohio State tapped Larry Romanoff as director of development services.

External programs director--Steve Snapp named director of external programs at Ohio State.

Information and media services director--Gerry Emig appointed acting director of athletics information and media services at Ohio State.

Sports information directors--Will Prewitt hired as sports information director at Tusculum. Prewitt has been sports information assistant at Appalachian State and replaces interim sports information director Jamie Hamer, who resigned to pursue opportunities in broadcasting ... John Estes resigned as sports information director at Miami (Ohio). Estes will serve as an account supervisor at Tunheim Santrizos Co., a Minneapolis public relations agency.

Sports information assistants--Mike Daniels resigned as assistant sports information director at San Diego, a position he has held for the past three years ... Loyola Marymount announced the resignation of assistant sports information director Ross Vitale, effective March 24.

Strength and conditioning coach--Tim Swanger accepted the strength and conditioning coach position at Cincinnati.

Fund-raiser--Fresno State head women's basketball coach Linda Wunder announced she will relinquish her coaching responsibilities to assume duties as women's athletics fund-raiser. Wunder has been head coach since 1993.

CONFERENCES

Tom Anastos selected as commissioner of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Mid-Continent Conference hired Jeff Reynolds as assistant commissioner for media relations. Reynolds, who served during the past year as assistant director of media services for the Sun Belt Conference, replaces Mark Simpson, who resigned, effective March 31.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Mark Bedics hired as statistics coordinator in the NCAA public affairs group. Bedics has been assistant sports information director at Marquette for the past 31Ž2 years.

AGREEMENT

Bell Atlantic agreed to serve as title sponsor for 21 Atlantic 10 Conference sports championships during the 1998-1999 academic year, including tennis, track and field, soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball and swimming.


NOTABLES

Jerry Yeagley named recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) highest honor, the Honor Award. During his tenure at Indiana, Yeagley netted three national championships and guided teams to 11 final four appearances.The NSCAA also selected former West Chester coach Mel Lorback as winner of the Bill Jeffrey Award, presented in recognition of outstanding service and/or achievement in college soccer. Lorback piloted teams to 13 national tournament appearances and one championship. In addition to coaching baseball, basketball, gymnastics and tennis, Lorback served as president of the NSCAA.

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo named recipient of the Henry Iba Award as coach of the year. Izzo, who has been at the Spartans' helm for the past three seasons, led his team to a share of the Big Ten Conference regular-season title and the NCAA regional semifinals this year.

Carlos Knox, a senior at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis, selected as Division II basketball player of the year. Knox captured his second division men's scoring title this season. He also led Division II in scoring in 1994-95. Knox also broke the school's scoring record with 2,556 points.


DEATHS

Marco Sheppard, a Chattanooga football player, died recently in a car accident that also claimed the life of Michelle Smith, a cheerleader at the school. Sheppard, 21, was the team's No. 2 receiver last season with 22 catches for 247 yards and one touchdown. Smith, 18, was on an academic scholarship at the school.
