Stanford claims another I women's swimming crown

Stanford led all the way in winning another Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships title March 19-21 at Minnesota -- its eighth women's swimming championship overall and sixth in the 1990s.

The Cardinal had strong performances from defending national champion Catherine Fox, who won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and swam legs on the winning 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams.

The Cardinal's 200- and 400 medley relays set NCAA records. The teams also featured Elin Austevoll, Misty Hyman and Siobhan Cropper.

First-year Stanford swimmer Misty Hyman swept both of the butterfly events and the 200-yard backstroke. In the 100 butterfly, Hyman set an NCAA record at 51.34 seconds.

Arizona overtook Georgia on the last day to take second place -- its best finish ever. The Wildcats won their third consecutive 200-yard freestyle relay, then the same foursome of Shannon Hosack, Liesl Kolbisen, Denali Knapp and Lindsey Farella captured the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Cats also won the 800 freestyle relay, making Arizona the first school since Stanford in 1982 to win all three freestyle relay titles. Farella was a member of all three squads.

Trina Jackson of Arizona, also a member of the 800 freestyle relay team, successfully defended her title in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:49.25.

Georgia finished third with 368 points as Kristy Kowal swept the individual breaststroke events. Keegan Walkely finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.22.

Cristina Teuscher became Columbia-Barnard's first woman national champion, and ended up a double winner. She captured the 500-yard freestyle in 4:35.45, the second-fastest American time behind Janet Evans' American record of 4:34.39. Teuscher went on to win the 400-yard individual medley.

Martina Moravcova of Southern Methodist, 1997 swimmer of the year, successfully defended all three of her titles (100- and 200-yard freestyles and 200-yard individual medley). Overall, Moravcova has won nine NCAA titles.

In diving, Texas senior Vera Ilyina ran away with the one-meter title, defeating her closet competitor, Jenny Lingamfelter of Southern Methodist, by more than 38 points. During the second day of competition, Ilyina also took the three-meter crown with a 612.60 score.

Tennessee junior Kathy Persek became the first Vol woman to win an NCAA title, capturing the platform diving crown.
