Iowa streak continues before sellout crowd

CLEVELAND -- That ol' black and gold magic proved to be too much again, even though the usual wizard wasn't sitting in the coach's chair.

Iowa, under interim coach Jim Zalesky, won its fourth straight Division I Wrestling Championships team title March 21 at Cleveland State in front of a sellout crowd of 12,997 for the finals.

The Hawkeyes piled up 115 points, the lowest winning score since 1994 (941/2, when Oklahoma State won), to outdistance runner-up and Big Ten Conference rival Minnesota, which finished a school-best second with 102 points. Minnesota was third last year.

A former assistant, Zalesky coached the Hawkeyes this year while Dan Gable -- who has led Iowa to 15 team championships, including the last three -- took a year off from coaching to contemplate retirement. A three-time individual champion (1982 through 1984) when he wrestled for Iowa, Zalesky had served as assistant coach for seven years.

"This proved that Iowa wrestling isn't just Dan Gable," said 134-pound champion Mark Ironside. "It's a philosophy and an attitude.

"We did what they said couldn't be done for the second year in a row."

In addition to Ironside, who won in the same weight class last year, teammates Joe Williams and Jeff McGinness claimed their respective weight classes. Williams' title was his third straight crown. He won at 167 pounds after taking the 158-pound class the past two years. Williams also claimed the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestling Award, marking the second straight year a Hawkeye has earned such recognition. Last year, Lincoln McIlravy, who served as an assistant coach this year, was the honoree.

Williams finished the season undefeated (34-0) for the first time in his career with a takedown in all three periods against Pennsylvania's Brandon Slay, who was runner-up in the same weight class last year.

"This (championship) probably means a little bit more," Williams said of the individual championship. "It's not how you start; it's how you finish.

"I'm probably a little more excited about the team (championship)."

With this year's most outstanding wrestler, Iowa passes Oklahoma and moves into second place for most MOWs with nine. Oklahoma State leads with 15.

Iowa's other championship came from McGinness, who earned the second individual trophy of his career, this one at 142 pounds. He won at 126 pounds in 1995 as a sophomore. He did not place as a junior and then red-shirted last year.

"The '95 title, it was more a load off my shoulders," said McGinness, whose win this year mathematically clinched the team trophy. "This one is more like a celebration."

Zalesky shared both of the emotions to which McGinness referred, perhaps more the former than the latter.

"I'm just happy for the program, happy for the coaching staff, happy for the wrestlers and happy for the fans," Zalesky said. "We showed a lot of heart. We just fought hard today."

Minnesota coach J Robinson, having been a Gable assistant himself, said thinks he knows how Zalesky feels.

"I think he has done a great job," said the Golden Gophers' mentor, who helped recruit Zalesky to Iowa from high school. "I think I have the right to comment on that because I did it (filled in) for a year and a lot of people don't know that.

"It's very hard to be in a situation where God resides right down the corridor (Gable worked in a noncoaching capacity in the Iowa athletics department this year). And I say that in a positive way. What you do is kind of sometimes second-guess your decisions. It's a real hard role to be in. That pressure is really kind of unbelievable."

During the dual-meet season the Hawkeyes looked -- and were -- vulnerable. Entering this year, they hadn't lost at Carver-Hawkeye Arena since 1988. This season, they lost three times at home.

One of those losses was to pretournament favorite Oklahoma State, the only team other than Iowa to win a title since 1988. But the Cowboys, who also were pretournament favorite last year, yielded again to the Hawkeyes, this time finishing third with 991/2 points.

Despite the drop from a second-place finish last year, Oklahoma State coach John Smith said he didn't think his team had a bad tournament.

"We wanted to win the national championship and it just didn't happen," he said. "But we didn't fail, we had a good tournament."

Other teams with successful tournament showings included Central Michigan, which finished a school-record fifth with 53 points. Previously, the Chippewas' best showing was eighth in 1981. Last year, Central Michigan shared 41st place, scoring six points.

Also, Ohio finished in the top 10 for the seventh time, tying Oregon State with 431/2 points.

In addition to Iowa's repeating champions, Oklahoma State's Eric Guerrero (126 pounds) and Ohio State's Mitch Clark (177 pounds) won titles for the second straight year. Defending 190-pound champion Lee Fullhart of Iowa finished third in the same class this year.

Oregon State's Oscar Wood, who finished third in the 142-pound class, earned the pin award, registering four falls in 12:52.

Paid attendance at Cleveland State's Convocation Center for the six sessions of competition totaled 73,020, the fourth-best mark in the championships' history. The event has been sold out in three of the last four years. The only year in that span it wasn't sold out was 1994 in Minneapolis, when that same city hosted NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship regionals games on the same weekend.
