Christopher Newport uses quality to claim III women's indoor track

When Christopher Newport won the 1997 Division III Women's Indoor Track Championships with only four competitors, it may have been viewed as a fluke.

Not anymore.

One year after their surprising victory, the Captains proved that quality wins out over quantity by successfully defending their title March 13-14 at Brandeis.

Christopher Newport registered 31 points to edge Wheaton (Massachusetts), which finished with 28 points.

The 31 points is the lowest total for a champion, and the three-point differential is the smallest margin of victory in the championships' 14-year history.

Binghamton and CCNY shared third-place honors with 18 points each. Buena Vista and Wisconsin-Oshkosh tied for fifth with 16 points apiece.

The title is No. 6 for the Captains, who have finished first or second at eight of the last 11 championships.

"I'm very proud of our kids because when you're the defending champion there's so much pressure," said Christopher Newport coach Vince Brown. "We try not to put pressure on them because we know they put pressure on themselves to do well, and there's a lot of pressure for the other athletes who were going to come after them. And they did."

So, how many athletes contributed points to the Captains' triumph? You guessed it. Four.

Bridgett Cochran and Meshailay Robinson each won individual events, Denita Eason netted a pair of top six finishes, and the Captains' quartet of Eason, Robinson, Jenita Harris and Cochran placed second in the 1,600-meter relay.

Cochran made it two consecutive victories in the 55-meter high hurdles, posting a time of 8.07 seconds to win her fourth career hurdles title. More importantly, Cochran, the two-time defending outdoor 100-meter hurdles champion, contributed 10 points to the team points total.

Robinson joined Cochran in successfully defending her 55-meter dash title, blowing away the field by more than one-tenth of a second. Robinson's triumph gave the Captains seven championships in the event's 14 years.

Eason, a freshman, provided the points that accounted for the Captains' margin of victory as she placed fifth in the 400-meter dash and sixth in the long jump. The 400 placing was worth two points; the long-jump finish was worth one.

While Christopher Newport occupied the team spotlight, Monique Hacker of Binghamton stepped into the individual spotlight.

The defending triple-jump champion, Hacker was successful in her defense in record-breaking fashion. Hacker leaped 12.46 meters (40 feet, 101/2 inches) to surpass the mark set by Brandeis' Eleena Zhelezov in 1995.

Deshawnda Williams of Wheaton (Massachusetts) secured her school's first championship, winning the 400. She then ran the final 400 meters on the squad's winning 1,600-meter relay.
