1998 Column No. 11Involvement of institution's coach and two-year college prospect in NCAA-funded summer baseball leagues

Divisions I and II

Division I institutions should note that during its December 10, 1997 meeting, the Division I Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet Subcommittee on Legislative Review/Interpretations determined that an institution's baseball coach may not serve as a coach of a team in an NCAA-funded summer baseball league that has as a team member a two-year college prospect.

However, Division II institutions should note that during its January 13, 1998, meeting, the Interpretations Subcommittee of the Division II Legislation Committee determined that an institution's baseball coach may serve as a coach of a team in an NCAA-funded summer baseball league that has a two-year college prospect as a team member.

Prospect viewing videotape/film during recruiting visit

Divisions I and II

Division I and II institutions should note that pursuant to Bylaw 13.4.2, it is not permissible to produce video materials to show or send to a prospect except as specified in 13.4.2.1 and 13.4.2.2.

In Divisions I and II, a prospect may tour an institution's athletics Hall of Fame or museum during a recruiting trip and view videotape/films related to the institution's athletics programs (even if such videotape/films do not meet the definition of a highlight film), provided the facility is open to the general public on a year-round basis and the videotape/film has been developed for the purpose of showing to the general public (as opposed to the recruitment of prospects). Further, pursuant to 13.4.4.1, the gift from a Division III institution of any tangible recruiting aid other than those permitted in 13.4.4 shall be considered an improper recruiting inducement.
