Core-Course Review Committee seeks I, II nominations

Nominations are being solicited from Divisions I and II for members of the new NCAA Core-Course Review Committee.

The 18-member standing committee was established by action in January of the Division I Board of Directors and the Division II membership, which adopted legislation setting forth the committee's composition and duties.

The committee is designated as a common committee because it will review courses denied by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse for use in meeting Divisions I and II initial-eligibility requirements.

The committee will assume duties performed by a subcommittee of the former NCAA Academic Requirements Committee in the previous governance structure. In addition to reviewing core-course decisions, the committee will assist in the development of policies related to the identification of core courses.

Five subcommittees dealing with academic disciplines will be formed from the new committee. The subcommittees:

  • English (four members).

  • Mathematics (four members).

  • Natural/Physical Science (four members).

  • Social Science (four members).

  • Additional Academic Courses (nondoctrinal religion/philosophy, foreign language and computer science) (two members).

Divisions I and II each will have at least one representative on each subcommittee.

Committee members will be appointed by the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and Division II Academic Requirements Committee.

Each subdivision of Division I must be represented on the committee.

Members currently serving on the NCAA Special Core-Course Review Committee are eligible for nomination to the new committee but are not guaranteed appointment.

The committee's work may be most appealing to individuals who have academic expertise relating to the Association's initial-eligibility requirements. Faculty members and admissions officers are strongly urged to seek positions on the committee.

The committee's busiest work period will be between May 1 and September 15, when committee members will participate in weekly telephone conferences. The committee also will conduct periodic telephone conferences from October through April.

It is anticipated that the committee will meet in person twice annually -- once during the spring and also likely during the fall.

In Division I, an individual interested in serving on the committee must be nominated by the multisport conference in which that individual's institution holds membership. The conference must submit the Division I Nomination Form and Division I Nominee Information Form for each candidate.

Interested individuals in Division II may be nominated by peers. Self-nominations also will be accepted. Candidates should contact Julie Quickel, NCAA committee coordinator, for the Division II Nomination Form and Division II Nominee Information Form.

All completed nomination forms must be returned to Quickel at the national office by April 17, 1998.

The Division Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and Division II Academic Requirements Committee are expected to make appointments to the new committee during their June meetings.
