1998 Title IX Seminar agenda focuses on several current topics

Several new sessions and a variety of informative speakers have been added to the agenda for the 1998 NCAA Title IX Seminar.

The annual seminar, which will be conducted May 12-13 in Chicago, is designed to assist the membership in complying with Title IX regulations.

The keynote speech will be provided by Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Iowa.

Among the new sessions will be a discussion on the effects of NCAA financial aid limits on Title IX compliance, led by NCAA General Counsel Elsa Cole, and an overview on the second cycle of athletics certification for Division I. Also, attorney Janet Judge will lead a forum addressing sexual harassment and Title IX.

The seminar will feature three panel discussions that will focus on the student-athlete perspective on Title IX, the new Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) policy on coaches' compensation, and the outlook for Title IX going into the 21st century.

Several speakers and panel guests were announced in a February mailing to the membership, including:

  • Charlotte West, associate director of athletics, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

  • Ellen Vargyas, EEOC general counsel.

  • Judith M. Sweet, director of athletics, University of California, San Diego.

  • Dan O'Brien, director of athletics, Temple University.

  • Nancy Hogshead, attorney, former Olympian and Women's Sports Foundation president.

  • Amy Cohen, former student-athlete, Brown University.

    Others who are scheduled to participate in the seminar include Mary Frances O'Shea of the Office for Civil Rights; Vince Sweeney, associate director of athletics for external affairs at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; Steve Wallo, director of athle-tics at Lewis and Clark College; Robertha Abney, director of athletics at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania; and Stephen P. Erber, director of athletics at Muhlenberg College.

    This is the first year for the seminar to be conducted in only one location. It will be at the Westin Hotel on Michigan Avenue.

    Although the seminars are designed for the membership, the general public also may attend.

    The seminars are free for NCAA institutional personnel, $75 for students and $150 for the general public.

    Rooms are available at the Westin for $135 a night if reservations are made before April 13.
