Baker named head coach at Guilford

Gene Baker has been named head baseball coach at Guilford. Baker succeeds Robert Fulton, who resigned last August after 13 years to assume a teaching position at Kernersville (North Carolina) High School.

Baker joins the Guilford staff after a one-year assistant coaching stint at Wake Forest. Prior to assuming that position, Baker served as head coach at Louisville, where in five years his teams set or tied 65 school records, including its 37 victories in 1992. As head coach at Northern Iowa from 1988 to 1990, Baker doubled the number of baseball players listed on the academic honor roll, and helped raise the team grade-point average from 2.320 in 1987 to 2.860 in 1990.

As a four-year letterman on the Austin Peay State baseball team, Baker, who was a catcher and designated hitter, received all-Ohio Valley Conference recognition in 1980 and Academic All-America designation in 1981.

Baker earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a master's degree in health and physical education from Austin Peay State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Thomas Kepple named president at Juniata. Kepple has been vice-president for business and community relations at Sewanee (University of the South) ... Hope's John H. Jacobson announced his retirement as president, effective June 30, 1999 ... Debra M. Murphy appointed president at Nichols. Murphy, who has been dean of academic affairs at the school, succeeds James A. Darazsdi, who resigned ... James H. Daughdrill Jr. announced his retirement as president of Rhodes, effective June 30, 1999 ... Greenville President Robert E. Smith will retire within the next year.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Tim Weiser tapped as athletics director at Colorado State. Weiser has been athletics director at Eastern Michigan since 1993 ... San Jose State named Chuck Bell athletics director. Bell has served as AD at Utah State for five years and succeeds Tom Brennan, who was named athletics director at La Salle ... T. J. Kostecky, athletics director since 1995 and head men's soccer coach at Pfeiffer, selected as head men's soccer coach at Appalachian State.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Don Morton, associate director of athletics at North Dakota State, selected as assistant to the president and director of university relations at the school.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Louisville announced the appointment of Julie Hermann to the position of senior woman administrator. Since 1997, Hermann has worked as assistant coach with the USA Women's National Volleyball Team in addition to fulfilling development and community-outreach responsibilities for that organization.

COACHES

Baseball--Dick Pawlow, 29-year veteran head coach at Western Illinois, announced he will retire at the end of the 1998 season. Currently, Pawlow ranks in the top 100 Division I baseball coaches in career wins with 593.

Baseball assistants--Jeff Feiler selected as assistant baseball coach at Albright. Feiler, who has coached on the high-school level, will be responsible for hitting and infielding.

Men's basketball--Bob Weltlich named head coach at South Alabama, where he has been interim coach ... Bart Bellairs, head coach at VMI, signed a 10-year contract extension.

Women's basketball--David McKey resigned after four seasons at Lamar, effective at the end of the season. McKey currently holds a 39-65 record at the school and is one victory away moving into third on the school's all-time victories list.

Field hockey--Louisville named Jill Reeve head coach. Reeve captains the United States Field Hockey Team and has been assistant coach at Penn State for two years.

Football--Fred Mariani accepted the head coaching position at Iona ... Washington State head coach Mike Price signed an eight-year contract that will extend his tenure at the school to December 31, 2005. Price led his team to a 10-2 mark and a Rose Bowl appearance last season.

Football assistants--Kelly Skipper hired as running backs coach at UCLA. In seven years as a coach at Fresno State, Skipper has worked with running backs and return specialists ... Redlands assistant coach and defensive coordinator Jim Winkler resigned after four seasons to pursue other coaching opportunities ... Purdue appointed Jim Chaney and Tim Lappano cooffensive coordinators. They have served unofficially in that capacity since last July. Chaney also is an offensive line coach and coordinates recruiting duties, and Lappano is responsible for receivers ... Nicholls State promoted Mitch Rodrigue to offensive coordinator and named Brad Griffin quarterbacks coach and Allen Rudolph running backs coach. Rodrigue, a six-year veteran at the school, also has worked as recruiting coordinator for the past five years. For the past three years, Griffin has coached wide receivers and Rudolph has been in charge of tight ends ... Kent assistant coach John Bowers named assistant coach in charge of defensive backs at Eastern Michigan. Bowers was an assistant at Kent last season ... Ron Miller appointed offensive line coach at Susquehanna. Miller has coached quarterbacks and receivers at Wilkes for the past three seasons ... Akron's David Snowball resigned as defensive coordinator to pursue business opportunities. He has been a member of the staff since 1995 ... Ron Reece, assis- tant coach at Mankato State for six years, resigned to pursue a coaching position at VMI. Last season, Reece coached linebackers and special teams ... North Carolina named Darrell Moody wide receivers coach ... Warren Maloney appointed defensive coordinator and Nate Shreffler appointed offensive line coach at St. Francis (Indiana) ... Southern California tapped Steve Greatwood as offensive line coach.

Men's golf assistant--Penn State selected Grant Robbin as assistant men's golf coach. Robbin has worked as a sports and event marketing specialist at Federal Express Corporation.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Joe Pavlik accepted the position of men's assistant lacrosse coach at Roanoke after serving as graduate assistant lacrosse coach at Alfred for three years.

Men's soccer--Charleston Southern hired Daniel Allen as head coach, replacing Shaun Docking. Allen has coached at Belmont Abbey for the last five years ... T. J. Kostecky, Pfeiffer head men's soccer coach for four years, tapped as head men's soccer coach at Appalachian State. Kostecky also has served as Pfeiffer's athletics director since 1995.

Women's soccer--Gordon Henderson named as the first women's soccer coach at Idaho State. The school is slated to begin competition in fall 1998. Henderson coached most recently at North Dako- ta State, where he also started the wo- men's soccer program ... Portland State announced two-year assistant coach Monty Hawkins will replace Neil Turnbull, who resigned after a one-year stint as head coach. Turnbull, who also coaches the Canadian National Women's Team, closes his tenure at the school with a 4-14-1 mark ... Beth Goetz named head women's soccer coach at Missouri-St. Louis, where she has been interim head coach ... Southeastern Louisiana hired Blake Hornbuckle as head women's coach ... Kym Eynard-Bozzi resigned as head coach at Binghamton after one year.

Women's volleyball--John Garneau, head coach at Plymouth State, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the school year. Garneau has led the program to a 47-15 mark and back-to-back 20-victory seasons since he initiated the volleyball program in 1996 ... Western New Mexico tapped James Callender as head coach.

Women's volleyball assistants--Kee Williams hired as an assistant volleyball coach at UNLV. Williams has been a member of the USA National Team since May 1997 ... Rice selected Gina Markin as assistant coach. Markin was head volleyball coach for four years at Hardin-Simmons, where she also served as academic tutorial supervisor for all athletes and taught physical education.

Wrestling--John Sterner appointed interim head coach at Southwest State.

STAFF

Strength and conditioning coordinator--Jim Lathrop named strength and conditioning coordinator at Purdue. Lathrop has served as head strength and conditioning coach at Wyoming for the past five years.

Ticket office manager--Eastern Michigan hired Josh Logan as ticket office manager. Logan comes to Eastern Michigan from Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds, where he was a ticket office accountant.

CONFERENCES

Conference USA commissioner Mike Slive awarded a contract extension through June 30, 2003. Slive is a member of the Division I Management Council and chair of the Division I Infractions Appeals Committee.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference appointed Johnny Grier as supervisor of football officials. Grier, a National Football League official for 17 seasons, was a MEAC game official before joining the NFL in 1981 as a field judge. He became the NFL's first black referee in 1988.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Orange Bowl Committee selected Albert E. Dotson Sr. as president and Susan Potter Norton as second vice-president. Dotson is the first black president of the committee and Norton could become the first woman to preside over the committee in 2001.

Jeff Tipping reappointed as director of coaching for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Tipping, head men's soccer coach at Muhlenberg for 12 years, has held the director's position since January 1996.


NOTABLES

Sue Regan, director of athletics and recreational services at Seton Hall, inducted into the New Jersey Sports Writers Association Hall of Fame. She and her husband, Richie, are the first husband and wife to be inducted into the hall of fame. With her April 1997 appointment as athletics director, Regan became the first female AD in the Big East Conference.

The Golf Coaches Association of America tapped Steve Conley, its 1997 coach of the year, to lead the U.S. team in the 1998 U.S.-Japan Matches July 2-4 in Tokyo. Conley, head men's coach at Methodist, has guided his teams to seven first-place finishes in 17 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships appearances. The GCAA also named Colorado head men's golf coach Mark Simpson as team leader for the U.S.-Japan Matches. Simpson is the current GCAA vice-president.

The Golf Coaches Association of America inducted Tom Brennan, Bob Ellis and Gene Miranda into the GCAA Hall of Fame. In his 34-year coaching career, Brennan worked at Oswego State and Coastal Carolina and guided 12 players to all-America honors. Ellis, head coach at Texas A&M, led his teams to two Southwest Conference championships and to the Central regional championship in 1996. As head coach at Air Force for 20 years, Miranda has a dual-meet record of 180-5 and has netted 12 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships and 13 second-place finishes. He also served as president of the GCAA in 1982-83.

Winners of the NCAA/AT&T Long Distance Awards for college basketball games played through January are: Three-point field goals per game, Division I men -- Corey Reed, Radford, 4.6; Division II men -- Antonio Harris, LeMoyne-Owen, 5.4; Division III men -- Jeff Clement, Grinnell (Iowa), 7.1; Division I women -- Jenny Higgins, Villanova, 4.1. Three-point field goal percentage, Division I men -- Toby Madison, South Alabama, 64.7; Division II men -- Todd Woelfle, Oakland City (Indiana), 75.0; Division III men -- Merrill Brunson, Wisconsin-Platteville, 80.0; Division I women -- Sarah Lenschow, Valparaiso, 75.0.

The 1997 Col. Earl "Red" Blaik All-American Football Foundation Leadership Award winners are Brian Griese, Michigan; Scott Frost, Nebraska; Peyton Manning, Tennessee; Chris McCoy, Navy; Bill Borchert, Mount Union; Brian Finneran, Villanova, Jason Crebo, Montana; and Anthony Jacobs, Merchant Marine. The honorees' institutions each will receive a $500 donation to the general scholarship fund and the honorees will receive plaques. The foundation also honored Tom Osborne, Nebraska; Jim Trussel, Youngstown State; Joe Glenn, Northern Colorado; and Larry Kehrnes, Mount Union, with the Frank Leahy Coach of the Year Award.
