Texas-Pan American names track coach

Texas-Pan American appointed Dana Colligan head coach of men's and women's track and cross country. Colligan succeeds Scott Richardson, interim head coach since August 1996, who accepted a position as assistant track coach at Indiana.

As an assistant coach at Butler, Colligan helped guide the women's indoor track and cross country squads to Midwestern Collegiate Conference championships. Colligan, who is certified by USA Track and Field for Levels I and II and multi-events, also has fulfilled assistant coaching and graduate assistant coaching responsibilities for men's and women's cross country and track and field at Swarthmore and Northern Arizona.

Colligan competed in cross country and the 800-, 400- and 1,200-meter track events at Maryland, where she served as captain of the track team for three years. A member of the dean's list for four years, she graduated cum laude in May 1994. Colligan has partially fulfilled requirements for a master's degree in educational leadership at Northern Arizona.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Adam W. Herbert Jr., president at North Florida, selected as chancellor of the State University System of Florida. Herbert will resign as chair of the Division II Presidents Council ... William E. Kirwan, president at Maryland and member of the Division I Board of Directors, named president at Ohio State, effective July 1 ... G. Thomas Mann, vice-president for academic affairs at West Virginia Wesleyan, selected as president at Davis and Elkins, effective July 1 ... Joseph M. McShane appointed president at Scranton. McShane has served as dean of Fordham's Fordham College.

COACHES

Baseball assistant--Mercyhust selected Joe Spano as assistant coach. He succeeds Joel Dombkowski, who assumed a post at Pittsburgh.

Men's basketball--Ed Messbarger, head coach at Angelo State, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season. Messbarger, whose career spans 41 years, was a 1990 inductee into the NAIA Hall of Fame and currently is ranked 18th in all-time NCAA career coaching victories with 657.

Women's basketball assistant--Seton Hall assistant women's basketball coach Samantha David resigned after a year and a half to pursue other career opportunities. David also has coached at St. John's (New York) and St. Bonaventure.

Field hockey--Northwestern tapped three-year assistant coach Diane Loosbrock as head coach, replacing Debra Brickey, who resigned after three seasons with a 29-31 overall mark. Loosbrock is the Central region administrative director for the National Futures Program in field hockey.

Football--Mark Speckman, offensive coordinator at Willamette for three seasons, named head coach at the school, succeeding Dan Hawkins, who resigned after five seasons to take an assistant coach position at Boise State. Speckman will retain his offensive coordinator responsibilities ... Curry hired Steve Nelson as head coach. Currently a sports radio broadcaster/commentator, Nelson played professional football with the New England Patriots of the National Football League for 14 years ... Jerome Souers selected at Northern Arizona after eight years as defensive coordinator at Montana.

Football assistants--Mitch Ware tapped as wide receivers coach at Navy. Ware served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Southwest Missouri State, where he has been a full-time assistant since 1982 ... Willamette promoted Glen Fowles to full-time assistant offensive line coach. In addition, Fowles will assume increased administrative duties and teach in the exercise science department at the school ... Kraig Paulson promoted from assistant coach to defensive coordinator at Montana. Paulson, a 10-year assistant coach at the school, has guided the defensive line for the past seven seasons ... Southern Utah named Kyle Davis assistant head coach and Chris Howard offensive coordinator. Both Davis, who coached the offensive line last season, and Howard, slotbacks coach for the past two seasons, will retain their previous duties ... Tom Cross appointed offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Macalester. Cross most recently worked at Concordia (Minnesota), where he has been head football coach since 1987 and head women's softball coach since 1982.

Women's golf--Karen Gray, third-year head coach and assistant director of professional golf management at Methodist, resigned to assume a position as customer service representative for Titleist and Foot-Joy Worldwide.

Women's lacrosse--Christine Scuderi accepted the head coaching position at Clarkson. She succeeds Alena Krug, who left after a two-year stint. Scuderi has served as assistant women's soccer coach and assistant athletic trainer at the school for the past two years.

Men's and women's rowing assistant--Drexel named Michael Alton assistant coach of men's and women's crew. Alton has worked as head women's crew coach at Wichita State and a varsity women's rowing coach at the high-school level.

Women's soccer--Northwestern State selected Pete Watkins as head coach. Watkins, head coach at MacMurray last season, replaces Maribeth Forrest, who resigned in November.

Women's softball--Ursinus assistant softball coach John M. Kelly appointed head coach at Haverford. Kelly succeeds Jeannine Ruh, who closes a three-year run as head women's basketball and softball coach to become head women's basketball coach at Earlham. Currently, Kelly is a sales manager at West Lumber Company in Philadelphia.

Men's tennis--Seton Hall named Jeff Greene as head coach. For the past five years, Greene has been director of tennis at Camp Winnebago in Kents Hill, Maine.

Men's tennis assistant--Brian Hanford promoted to full-time assistant coach at Montana, succeeding Jodi Robinson, who resigned last month. Hanford will continue to work as a tennis instructor with the Missoula Athletic Club's junior programs.

Women's tennis--Angela Rudert, assistant men's and women's coach and head men's junior varsity coach at Pennsylvania since August 1997, hired as head women's coach at Cornell. Rudert replaces Kathy Barnard, who resigned in November.

Men's and women's track and field--Clemson appointed Ron Garner head women's track and field coach, replacing Wayne Coffman. Garner has been an assistant women's track coach at Illinois since 1991 ... David Segura tapped as head coach of men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field at Saint Rose. Segura, who will coach men's and women's cross country next fall, was assistant varsity coach at Albany (New York) last fall.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Charlie Mays named assistant coach for men's and women's track and field at Seton Hall. Mays most recently worked as an assistant coach at Jersey City State ... Akron appointed Dusty Cover as assistant track and field coach. She will work with athletes competing in the discus, shot put, hammer and javelin ... Kim Graham selected as assistant coach at Virginia, where she served as a volunteer assistant last fall ... Wichita State hired Scott Steffan as assistant coach. He succeeds Tom Hays, who resigned last fall to take a similar position at Arizona. Steffan most recently served as assistant men's and women's track and field coach at Virginia.

Women's volleyball--Christine Masel, senior woman administrator at Christian Brothers and head women's volleyball coach at the school during the 1997 season, hired as head coach at Chicago. Masel succeeds Rosalie Resch, who will retain her responsibilities as associate athletics director for financial affairs.

STAFF

Assistant athletic trainer--Drexel announced the selection of Cesar Nava as part-time assistant athletic trainer. Nava has served as a student trainer at Temple ... Diane Bartholomew hired as assistant athletic trainer at Wichita State, replacing Brenda McVinua, who accepted a similar position at Southern Illinois. Head athletic trainer at Allen County (Kansas) Community College since August 1996, Bartholomew also will head the student athletic trainers educational program at Wichita State.

Academic advisor--Jennifer Amodeo promoted from intern to academic advisor at Temple. Amodeo has worked in recreation services and as an insurance coordinator in Temple's athletics department.

Academic assistant--Kent named Anton Goff as assistant athletics academic counselor. Goff, who has worked as an administrative graduate assistant at the school for two years, replaces Linda Zygmond, who accepted an advising post in the education program at Michigan.

CORRECTION

The vote tally for 1998 Convention Proposal No. 6 was reported correctly in a story on the Division II business session at the 1998 Convention in the January 19 issue of The NCAA News, but was reported incorrectly in an accompanying box. The correct tally for the defeated proposal involving maximum equivalency limits in Division II football is 61-75-6.

The most recent winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college bas-ketball are: Three-point field goals per game -- Division I men, Curtis Staples, Virginia, 4.3; Division II men, Orlando Chatman, Tuskegee, 4.4; Division III men, Jeff Clement, Grinnell, 7.3; Division I women, Sherry Surney, Mississippi Valley, 4.3. Three-point field goal percentage -- Division I men, Coby Turner, Dayton, 69.7; Division II men, Brian Dukes, Michigan Tech, 64.7; Division III men, Bob Southworth, Gustavus Adolphus, 70.4; Division I women, Suzy Ramant, Kansas, 57.1.


Deaths

Bethune-Cookman football wide receiver Crayton Sanders was killed in a single-car accident November 30 while returning from Thanksgiving break in Miami, Florida, with four teammates. He was 20. Sanders netted Walt Disney World most-valuable-player honors at the 51st annual Florida Classic a week before his death. The school retired his jersey, No. 80, and established a scholarship fund in his name.

Pace basketball coach Darrell Halloran died January 3 in New York. He was 47.
