Hyman appointed AD at Texas Christian

Eric Hyman, athletics director at Miami (Ohio) since 1995, has been named athletics director at Texas Christian. He succeeds Frank Windegger, who will step down after 22 years.

Before becoming AD at Miami, Hyman served as executive associate athletics director at North Carolina State and athletics director at VMI. He also has been assistant football coach and associate athletics director at Furman.

A 1973 graduate of North Carolina, Hyman appeared on the dean's list and earned all-conference honors in football. As a senior, Hyman was a preseason all-American at defensive tackle.

Karen Womack, associate athletics director at Miami, will serve as interim athletics director at the institution until a replacement is appointed.


GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Nick Dunagan named acting chancellor at Tennessee-Martin, effective in February. Dunagan was executive vice-chancellor at the school.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Yale's Thomas A. Beckett, athletics director since 1994, appointed to a second five-year term ... Bill Carey, director of athletics at Nazareth for 18 years, will retire, effective June 30.

COACHES

Field hockey--Kevin Cooke named head field hockey coach at Mercyhurst, succeeding Pam Fischer, who resigned to pursue other interests. Cooke, who also will coach women's lacrosse at the school, most recently coached at Alfred.

Field hockey assistant--Alison Brown named assistant coach at Mercyhurst. Brown, 10th leading scorer all-time in lacrosse at Old Dominion, also will serve as assistant coach for women's lacrosse.

Football--Frank Solich named head coach at Nebraska. Solich succeeds 25-year veteran Tom Osborne, who announced his retirement (see story on page 20) ... Utah State tapped Dave Arslanian as head coach ... Houston Nutt selected as head coach at Arkansas to replace Danny Ford, who was released. Nutt, who played football at Arkansas in 1976 and 1977, was coach at Boise State ... Carl Torbush, defensive coordinator at North Carolina since 1994, named head coach at the school. Torbush succeeds Mack Brown, who was selected as head coach at Texas ... Macalester's Tom Bell, head coach since 1994, will not return next season. Bell also has coached at Coast Guard, New Haven and Plymouth State ... Dave Keeny, associate head coach at Kutztown since 1996, promoted to head coach at his alma mater. Keeny replaces Al Leonzi, head coach since 1993. Leonzi, an assistant at the school from 1969 to 1987 who also served as interim head coach in 1984, will continue at the school as academics and fund-raising consultant and senior professor in the secondary education department. Keeny has served as offensive coordinator and assistant coach at the school ... Frankie DeBusk, offensive coordinator and administrative assistant to the head coach at Chattanooga, named head football coach at Tusculum ... Georgia added one year to head coach Jim Donnan's five-year contract, extending it through 2001.

Football assistants--Texas selected Greg Davis as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Carl Reese as defensive coordinator. Davis most recently piloted the North Carolina offensive attack and Reese has served as defensive coordinator at LSU since 1994 ... Chuck Reedy named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach and Woody McCorvey selected as receivers coach at South Carolina.

Women's golf--Tarleton State appointed Rusty Jergins as interim women's golf coach. Jergins has served as dean of students at the school since 1989.

Men's golf assistant--Todd Selders named assistant golf coach at Oklahoma. Selders was boys' and girls' golf coach at Mansfield (Texas) High School for eight years.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Cortland State tapped Brian Putnam as assistant coach.

Women's soccer--Geoffrey Bennett selected as women's soccer coach at St. Bonaventure ... Mary Gibson resigned as head coach at St. Francis (Pennsylvania), effective immediately. Gibson closes her two-year tenure with a 3-31 mark.

Men's soccer--Jack Detchon, Kenyon's most successful soccer coach in the 51-year history of the program, resigned, effective December 31. Detchon closes his tenure with a 63-11-3 record in four years ... Jersey City State named John Calcaterra as head coach. Calcaterra succeeds Carlos Curling, who resigned after four seasons. Calcaterra has served as assistant coach at St. Peter's since 1994 ... Don Gregory hired as head men's soccer coach at Southwestern. Gregory, who has coached at the high-school level for 17 years, also will coach tennis at the school.

Women's softball assistant--Frank McCusker named assistant softball coach at St. John's (New York).

Women's tennis--MIT's Merrilee Keller resigned as women's tennis coach to pursue an interest in art. Keller compiled a 14-6 record in two years.

Women's tennis assistant--Paula Rembac hired as women's assistant coach at Quinnipiac, replacing Keith Woodward, who will continue to serve as assistant director of facilities at the school.

Men's and women's track and field--Boise State track coach Ed Jacoby resigned.

Women's volleyball--Kim Hils resigned as head coach at Centre. Hils, who also served as assistant track coach at the school, compiled a 56-24 record in two years.

Women's volleyball assistant--Montana assistant coach Mary Klueber resigned for personal reasons after four seasons at the school.

STAFF

Fund-raising director--John Mulherin named president of the Southern Boosters at his alma mater, Georgia Southern. Mulherin currently serves as vice-president of fund-raising for the United Way in greater Augusta, Georgia.

Sports medicine services coordinator--Kimberly Goulding resigned as coordinator of sports medicine services at MIT. Goulding, who has accepted an athletic training position at American International, became sports medicine services coordinator before the fall 1997 semester.

Sports services director--Linda Jepsen appointed director of sports services at Conference USA. Jepsen has served as an administrative manager at the conference since its establishment in 1995.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Alfred announced it is ending its affiliation with the Presidents' Athletic Conference, effective September 1, 1998.


Notables

Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning collected the Maxwell Award, given to the best all-around player; the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award; and the Scholar-Athlete Award. The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame also selected Manning as recipient of the Burger King-Vincent dePaul Draddy Award, which includes a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship. Manning, who established career marks in passing yardage and touchdowns at Tennessee, was one of 18 scholar-athletes who received postgraduate scholarships totalling $340,000 from the foundation this year.

Charles Woodson of Michigan netted the Chuck Bednarik Award as defensive player of the year and the Jim Thorpe Award as the top defensive back, in addition to winning this year's Heisman Trophy (see story on page 9).

Texas' Ricky Williams received the Doak Walker Award as top running back. Walker led the nation with 1,893 rushing yards.

Randy Moss of Marshall captured the Biletnikoff Award for outstanding receiver, with 90 catches for 1,647 yards this season.

The Outland Trophy went to Nebraska interior lineman Aaron Taylor.

Kansas State junior Martin Gramatica received the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top place kicker. Gramatica converted 37 of 38 extra points and 19 of 20 field goals.

Dwight Collins, Central Florida running back who has been deaf since a bout with meningitis when he was an infant, was the recipient of the Wide World of Sports Spirit Award.

The 1997 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year honor went to Michigan's Lloyd Carr. Carr piloted his team to a Big Ten Conference championship and a Rose Bowl showdown for national-championship honors against Washington State on New Year's Day.

Mount Union senior quarterback Bill Borchert captured the 1997 Gagliardi Trophy as the outstanding football player in NCAA Division III. Borchert led Mount Union to national championships in 1996 and 1997.

Rolex College Golfer of the Month honors for November went to UNLV's Jeremy Anderson, a sophomore, and junior Krissie Register at Arizona.

Nebraska senior defensive end Grant Wistrom collected the 28th annual Rotary Lombardi Award as the nation's top lineman. Wistrom is Nebraska's all-time tackles-for-loss leader with 58.5 and he ranks second in school history with 27 sacks. Wistrom also is Big 12 defensive player of the year for the second consecutive year.

Winners of the AT&T/NCAA Foundation Season Long Distance Awards are Ricky Williams, Texas, rushing yards per game; Tim Couch, Kentucky, passing yards per game; Troy Edwards, Louisiana Tech, receiving yards per game; Chad Kessler, LSU, punting average; Tim Dwight, Iowa, punt return average; and Eric Booth, Southern Mississippi, kickoff return average.


Deaths

Jack Ryan, assistant swimming coach at North Carolina and former head coach at Army and Florida, died of liver cancer December 8. Ryan was a member of two Big Ten Conference championship swim teams at Ohio State, where he also netted all-American honors nine times. Called "The Grand Old Man of College Swimming," Ryan guided Florida to six Southeastern Conference titles in eight years before moving in 1959 to Army, where he compiled a combined record of 312-154-1 through 29 years in men's and women's swimming. Ryan, who retired from his post at Army, was in his ninth year as an assistant at North Carolina.

Keith Piper, head football coach at Denison, died of congestive heart failure December 8. He compiled a 200-142-19 record during his tenure as coach from 1954 to 1992. Piper and his Denison teams garnered national attention as one of the last teams to employ the single-wing offense in which other backs took the snap from center while the quarterback was used a blocker. He was an associate professor of physical education at Denison and president of the North Coast Athletic Conference coaches' association.
