Gruninger to retire after 31 years at Rutgers

Frederick E. Gruninger, director of athletics at Rutgers since 1973, will retire at the end of the academic year.

Gruninger was appointed assistant athletics director at Rutgers in 1966 and became associate AD in 1971. He served as golf coach from 1963 to 1971. Both his bachelor's and master's degrees were earned at Rutgers.

Gruninger was a member of the NCAA Council and recently was elected first vice-president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

During his tenure at Rutgers, Gruninger oversaw the university's entrance into the Big East Conference in 1995-96 and has worked to expand academic support for student-athletes. Another thrust of his efforts has been involvement of Rutgers student-athletes in service to local communities, particularly hospitals, schools and charitable organizations in central New Jersey.


GENERAL

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Curt Tong, athletics director at Pomona-Pitzer for the past 15 years, will retire effective July 1, 1998. Tong has been active for 34 years as a men's basketball coach and women's tennis coach and administrator at Otterbein, Williams and Pomona ... Carolyn Lewis, associate AD and senior woman administrator at San Jose State, named interim AD. Lewis, a 1970 San Jose State alumnus, has been a member of the athletics staff since 1974, coaching the women's basketball and field hockey teams ... Larry Gallo, AD at Indiana State, resigned to become senior associate AD at North Carolina.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Tim Bernal, associate athletics director for external affairs at Georgia Southern, resigned to enter private business. Bernal also was president of the Southern Boosters, the athletics department's fund-raising division ... Eugene "Cy" Fritz retired as associate director of men's athletics at Millersville. Fritz was in charge of the school's intramural and club sports programs for more than 20 years ... Florida Atlantic appointed Lloyd Honickman associate AD for business affairs and promoted Bob Vanatta to associate AD for athletics. Vanatta was assistant AD.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Eric Newsome hired as assistant athletics director for operations and marketing at Florida Atlantic and Alex Smolka promoted to assistant AD for academics and student life at the university ... Kara Baldwin named assistant AD for business affairs at Iona.

COACHES

Baseball assistant--John Graham named assistant coach at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts). Graham was a standout player at Massachusetts-Dartmouth and played in the Boston Red Sox minor-league system for three years.

Men's basketball--Dean Smith, head coach at North Carolina, retired (see story on page 16). Bill Guthridge, Smith's longtime assistant coach, was named as his successor ... Bill Musselman, head coach at South Alabama, resigned. Hired in 1995, Musselman led the Jaguars to a 23-6 record last season.

Men's basketball assistants--Wallace Johnson and Christopher Cullinan named assistant coaches at Brandeis. Johnson has been an assistant coach at MIT for the past two years and Cullinan has been an AAU girls' basketball coach and scout ... Ryan De Kuiper hired as assistant coach at Calvin ... Ken Huber appointed assistant coach at North Florida. He was an assistant at Long Island-Southampton ... Joe Gallagher, Darryl Kosciak and Chris Bohlen named assistants at North Carolina-Greensboro. Gallagher has been an assistant at Richmond for the past five seasons. Kosciak, who was student manager for four years and a volunteer assistant for two years, was promoted to assistant coach. Bohlen takes over the volunteer coaching position ... Brian Gaccione, Rich Sponzille, Damian Kennedy and Sal Constantino hired as assistant coaches at Ramapo ... Reni Mason named as a full-time assistant at Minnesota-Morris. Mason was a restricted-earnings coach at New Orleans in 1994-95.

Women's basketball assistant--Jane Weymouth hired as assistant coach at Florida Atlantic.

Men's and women's cross country--Kristen Seabury named head men's and women's coach at Florida Atlantic ... Andrew Roberts appointed head men's and women's cross country and track coach at Syracuse.

Football assistant--Peter Raeford hired as full-time secondary coach at Minnesota-Morris. He was a student assistant at Moorhead State last year.

Men's golf--Donald Clement named interim head coach at Coastal Carolina, succeeding Todd McCorkle, who became associate head coach at Arizona. Clement has been assistant coach for the past three seasons.

Men's ice hockey--Roger Williams appointed Kevin Matson as head coach, succeeding Don Armstrong, who is retiring after 10 seasons. Matson was assistant coach in the program last year.

Men's ice hockey assistant--John Snyder hired as assistant coach at Roger Williams. He has coached at the high-school level.

Men's lacrosse--Tim Price appointed interim head coach at Quinnipiac, succeeding Anthony LoRicco, who resigned after three years to take a high-school coaching position. Price was assistant coach for the past two years.

Men's soccer--Claremont-Mudd-Scripps head coach Steve Davis resigned effective at the end of the 1997 season. He will continue as a philosophy professor at Claremont McKenna College. Louis Bilowitz, an assistant coach for the past two seasons, was named to succeed Davis. Davis is in his 29th season coaching the Stags and has compiled a 247-35-18 record.

Women's soccer assistant--Scott Fergus appointed assistant women's coach at Florida Atlantic.

Women's softball--Bridget Baxter hired as head coach at Cabrini. Baxter graduated in May from Villanova, where she played second base for the Wildcats.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants--Brad Shively named assistant men's and women's coach at Washington (Missouri), succeeding Sean Malottke, who resigned to enter the Marine Corps. Shively was assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Kalamazoo from 1991 to 1997 ... Florida Atlantic appointed Tom Till assistant swimming coach and aquatics director and Noemi Zaharia assistant swimming coach.

Men's tennis--Greg Kennett appointed head coach at Washington (Missouri). Kennett is a senior professional at Creve Couer Racquet and Paddle Club.

Women's tennis--Kari Yerg selected as head coach at Florida Atlantic.

Men's and women's track and field--Andrew Roberts appointed head men's and women's track and cross country coach at Syracuse.

STAFF

Academic services assistant--John Anderson selected as assistant director of academic services in the athletics department at Texas Tech. He was academic counselor at Texas Tech last season ... Jamie Fogarty appointed academic advisor for student-athletes at Iona.

Broadcast relations/corporate sales director--Dan Baker appointed director of broadcast relations and corporate sales at Drexel. He will coordinate athletics broadcasting and advertising. Baker also will provide color commentary for Drexel men's basketball on a limited basis in 1997-98 and become play-by-play announcer in 1998-99.

Communications assistant--Kenneth Dominski promoted from athletics communications graduate assistant to assistant director of athletics communications at Syracuse. Dominski has served as a graduate assistant since 1995.

Media relations director--Brian Kirschner selected as sports media relations director at Temple.

Operations assistant--Jerry Oravitz hired as operations associate at Delaware. He served a graduate internship with the Delaware athletics department last spring.

Sports information director--Richard Thompson Jr., sports information director at Wayne State (Michigan), resigned to become alumni relations officer at Michigan-Flint. Thompson will retain his duties as information director for the Midwest Intercollegiate Football and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conferences for the 1997-98 season.

Sports information assistant--Karen Hagman hired as assistant sports information director at Florida Atlantic.

Strength and conditioning assistant--Ryan Tedford named assistant strength and conditioning coach at Kent. He was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Texas for the past two years.

Athletic trainer--Gayle Olson appointed head athletic trainer at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts). Olson was head trainer at Wheaton (Massachusetts) from 1979 to 1993 and a member of the medical staff at the Bay State Games for the past three years.

Assistant athletic trainers--Erik Hayes hired as assistant trainer at Methodist, succeeding Stephen Atstupenas, who resigned to become trainer for the Central Hockey League's Fayetteville Force ... Travis Maloy named assistant trainer and Doni O'Bryan and Keith Klahold appointed graduate assistant trainers at Florida Atlantic.

CONFERENCES

John Soffey appointed coordinator of football officiating for the Big East Conference, effective at the beginning of the 1998 season.

ASSOCIATIONS

Dutch Baughman hired as executive director of the Division I-A Athletic Directors' Association, succeeding Gene Hooks. Hooks, who became executive director in 1992 after serving as athletics director at Wake Forest for 26 years, will remain with the association as director of development and will direct the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Baughman was AD at Oregon State from 1989 until last August. Baughman will assume the directorship November 1, at which time the association will relocate its offices from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Fort Worth, Texas.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has formed a Division I men's ice hockey league, which will begin play in the 1998-99 season. The league will consist of eight schools -- American International, Canisius, Connecticut, Fairfield, Holy Cross, Iona, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart. Canisius, Fairfield and Iona are full members of the MAAC and the other five schools will become associate members of the conference.


Notables

Ron Polk named head coach of the 1998 USA Baseball National Team, succeeding Bob Milano of California, who led the 1997 team to an overall record of 21-13. Polk currently serves as assistant athletics director at Mississippi State and was head baseball coach at the university from 1976 to 1997, compiling an 888-422 record.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of October 4 are: longest run from scrimmage, 99 yards, Eric Vann, Kansas vs. Oklahoma; longest pass play, 98 yards, Jose Davis to Eugene Baker, Kent vs. Central Florida; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 56 yards on two punts, Brad Hill, Tulane vs. Army; longest punt return, (tie) 80 yards, Quinton Spotwood, Syracuse vs. East Carolina, and Geoff Turner, Colorado State vs. Hawaii; longest kickoff return, 94 yards, Bo Carroll, Florida vs. Arkansas; and longest field goal, 51 yards, Joe Garcia, Kansas vs. Oklahoma. AT&T contributes $400 in each of the six categories each week to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

Duke junior Jenny Chuasiriporn and Texas Christian senior J. J. Henry named Rolex College Golfers of the Month for September. The award is based on results from Rolex Collegiate Tour events. Chuasiriporn won the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship and Henry won individual medalist honors at the Ping/Golfweek Preview.

Former President George Bush named recipient of the American Football Coaches Association's highest honor, the Tuss McLaughry Award. Bush will receive the award at the AFCA Coach of the Year Banquet January 7 in Dallas. The Tuss McLaughry Award is given to a distinguished American for highest distinction in service to others.


Deaths

Aldo Sebben, athletics director at Southwest Missouri State from 1955 to 1982, died October 6. He was 77. Sebben was a member of the football and wrestling teams at Illinois State before graduating in 1947. Sebben joined the Southwest Missouri State staff in 1952 as an assistant football coach and head track coach. He became head football coach in 1956, a year after assuming the post of athletics director. During his tenure, he also coached cross country. He retired in 1990 as a member of the physical education department faculty.

Bill Easton, former track and cross country coach at Kansas, died October 7 in Kansas City, Kansas. He was 93. Easton coached at Kansas from 1947 to 1965, leading outdoor track teams to national championships in 1959 and 1960 and the cross country team to the national title in 1953. His track teams also won 11 indoor and 11 outdoor conference titles and the cross country team won 16 conference titles. He was inducted into the Kansas hall of fame in 1977.

Robert Lee Wheeler Jr., Queens (New York) track coach for 18 years, died October 6 in New York, New York. He was 76. Wheeler was men's and women's track and cross country coach at Queens until March 1997. He also served as assistant meet director of the Colgate Women's Games for 23 years.

Professional wrestler Brian Pillman, a former standout football player at Miami (Ohio), was found dead October 5 in his motel room in Bloomington, Minnesota. He was 35. Authorities did not immediately determine the cause of death. Pillman was a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984 and then was a linebacker with the Calgary Stampeders before beginning his wrestling career 11 years ago. He had participated in a match October 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

George Barclay, North Carolina's first all-American football selection and a former coach, died October 5 at his home in Asheville, North Carolina. He was 87. Barclay played offensive guard and linebacker at North Carolina and later became head coach of the Tar Heels. After resigning as head coach, he was rehired as an assistant coach and continued in that position through the 1966 season. His uniform (No. 99) was retired recently at North Carolina.
