Fuller becomes AD at Tennessee

Vivian Fuller, director of athletics at Northeastern Illinois since 1992, has been appointed AD at Tennessee State.

Fuller succeeds Howard Gentry Jr., who resigned to take another position within the university.

Fuller earned her undergraduate degree at Fayetteville State and a master's degree at Idaho. She earned a doctorate in higher education administration at Iowa State.

She served as assistant AD at North Carolina A&T from 1984 to 1987, then was named associate athletics director at Indiana (Pennsylvania).

Fuller served as chair of the NCAA National Youth Sports Program Committee and is a member of the Division I Management Council. She served on the Division I Management Council Transition Team representing the Mid-Continent Conference.

Fuller is a nationally known speaker on gender equity and was a member of the NCAA Gender-Equity Task Force.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Herman James, president at Rowan, will retire effective June 30, 1998 ... James Freedman will resign as president at Dartmouth in June 1998 but will remain on the faculty as professor of political science ... Skidmore president David Porter resigned effective December 31, 1998 ... Gary Ransdell named president at Western Kentucky. Ransdell has been vice-president for administration and advancement at Clemson.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bob Goin named athletics director at Cincinnati. Goin, former AD at Florida State, most recently was consultant to the athletics director and president at North Florida ... Morgan Burke, AD at Purdue since 1993, will resign in early 1998 to accept an officer-level position with Chicago-based Inland Steel Industries.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Charles "Mickey" McDade appointed associate athletics director for recreational sports and facilities at George Mason. McDade has served as recreation/pool liaison at the university since September 1996, coordinating the university's aquatics projects on the Fairfax and Prince William campuses.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Scott Gibbons named assistant athletics director for media relations and promotions at Rhode Island College. Gibbons has been sports information director at Nichols for the past three years ... Michael Rehm appointed assistant AD for development at Cal State Northridge. Rehm has been development officer at Montana for the past year ... Jeff Burns and Sue Bias promoted to assistant AD at Randolph-Macon. Burns has been a coach at the college since 1987, coaching women's and men's soccer and men's tennis. He will continue as associate head men's soccer coach. Bias joined the college as women's tennis coach in 1994 and formed the women's volleyball program. She will head the new women's softball program, which will begin play in 1998 ... John Mocek, director of business affairs and operations at Texas-Arlington, promoted to assistant AD for business and operations at the university. Mocek was an assistant baseball coach for 14 years before assuming responsibility for the athletics department's business affairs in August 1996.

COACHES

Baseball assistants--Derek Johnson hired as pitching coach at Stetson. He coached pitchers at Southern Illinois for the past three seasons ... Steve Cervizzi appointed pitching coach at Trinity (Connecticut), succeeding Keith Wiley. Cervizzi was an assistant at Eastern Connecticut State ... Stacy Parker, former assistant at Orange Coast College, hired as an assistant coach at San Diego State.

Men's basketball assistants--Steve Rossignoli and Dwight Davis named assistant coaches at Albright. Rossignoli has been a supervisor for the Division of Recreation in Reading, Pennsylvania. Davis was a four-year letterwinner at center for Albright before graduating in May ... Brian Bidlingmyer hired as assistant coach at Marquette. He most recently was an assistant coach at Hobart ... Nelson Whitmore appointed assistant men's basketball coach and assistant to the athletics director at Brockport State. Whitmore was an assistant men's basketball coach at St. John Fisher from 1992 to 1995 ... Kevin Kudla named assistant coach of the men's and women's basketball teams at Clarkson ... Owen Miller hired as assistant coach at Texas-San Antonio. Miller was an assistant at Mississippi State for the past three years.

Women's basketball--Anne Bonner hired as head coach at Albright. Bonner was an assistant coach at Mansfield for the past three years.

Women's basketball assistant--Patrick Hughes named assistant coach at MacMurray, where he also will be an admissions counselor. Patrick is a 1997 MacMurray graduate.

Men's and women's cross country assistant--Staci Sparks named assistant cross country and track and field coach at Cornell College. Sparks has coached at the high-school level.

Field hockey--Natalie Gozzard named interim head coach at St. Mary's (Maryland). Gozzard teaches at the high-school level.

Men's and women's golf--Kurt Thomas appointed golf course director and head golf coach at Bowling Green. Thomas has been interim course director and interim coach for both the men's and women's teams since June ... Richard "Doc" Sauers named head women's golf coach at Albany (New York). Sauers retired last March as head men's basketball coach at the university after more than four decades. He coached the Albany men's golf team for 19 seasons until the program was discontinued in 1979.

Women's golf assistant--John Riley hired as assistant women's golf coach at Brockport State.

Women's lacrosse--Amanda Mabee named head women's lacrosse and soccer coach at Colby-Sawyer. Mabee graduated this year from Ithaca, where she was a standout athlete on the soccer and lacrosse teams, earning college female-athlete-of-the-year honors her senior year.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Rebecca Joseph DeVirgiliis hired as assistant coach at Temple. She formerly was an assistant at Princeton.

Men's soccer--Eric Wagner, head coach at Southwestern (Texas), named head coach at St. Mary's (Maryland).

Men's soccer assistant--Lev Kirshner selected as assistant coach at San Diego State. He was an assistant coach at Rutgers.

Women's softball--Kathy Van Wyk named head coach at San Diego State. Van Wyk was an assistant at the university ... Sue Bias named to head the new women's softball program at Randolph-Macon. She previously formed the college's women's volleyball program and served as women's tennis coach. Bias also will be assistant athletics director.

Women's softball assistants--Jeffrey Egan appointed assistant coach at Albright. He most recently was a high-school coach ... Gianna Amatangelo named as the first part-time assistant women's softball coach at California (Pennsylvania). Amatangelo was a member of the 1997 Division II championship softball team at California (Pennsylvania) before graduating last spring.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--John Iminovici hired as an assistant track and field coach at Marquette. The former Romanian national team coach recently completed a graduate assistantship at DePaul ... Staci Sparks named assistant cross country and track and field coach at Cornell College. Sparks has coached at the high-school level ... Shantel Twiggs and Joey Woody hired at Northern Iowa. Twiggs, who will be a full-time coach, has been coaching at the high-school level. Woody, who will be a part-time coach, won the Division I 400-meter hurdles this past June while a member of the Northern Iowa track team.

Wrestling--Phil Du Bois, a member of the Wisconsin-Oshkosh wrestling team from 1990 to 1993, returned to his alma mater as head wrestling coach. Du Bois compiled a 55-35-3 career record with 31 pins as an undergraduate.

STAFF

Marketing and promotions director--Chris Janush named director of marketing and promotions at Holy Cross. Janush has been athletics marketing assistant at Connecticut since 1995.

Marketing assistant--John Mosher joined Marquette's marketing staff as a marketing representative.

Media relations assistant--Johanna Sarnowksi appointed assistant director of athletics media relations at Pittsburgh. She has been an intern in the media relations department for the past three months.

Sales director--Meridith Jordal named director of sales at Marquette. Jordal was director of corporate relations at Northern Illinois.

Sports information directors--Scott Gibbons, sports information director at Nichols since November 1994, hired as assistant athletics director for media relations and promotions at Rhode Island College ... Jeff Duggan named SID at Colorado School of Mines, succeeding Keith Bingham, who took a sports information position at Colorado College. Duggan was a student assistant SID at Regis (Colorado).

Sports information assistants--Andy Grossman and Susan Pitz named assistant sports information directors at UNLV. Grossman was an intern last year in the department and Pitz was a graduate assistant in the sports information office at Pacific (California).

Sports medicine director--Tim Mulvihill named full-time director of sports medicine at St. Mary's (Maryland). He has been head athletic trainer at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and Cabrini, where he also served as strength coach.

CONFERENCES

Shawn Robinson selected as assistant communications director for the Mid-American Conference. Robinson joins the MAC after a two-year internship in Kentucky's athletics media relations office.

CORRECTIONS

The dates for the Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Championship were listed incorrectly in the championships dates and sites insert in the September 29 issue of The NCAA News. Regionals will be May 1-3, 1998, and finals will be May 8-11, 1998.

Also, the wrong host institution was listed for the Division I Men's Golf Championships finals. The University of New Mexico will serve as host.


Notables

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) announced winners of its District Administrator of the Year awards. Winners are District 1, Deborah Chin, New Haven; District 2, Sue Regan, Seton Hall; District 3, Kitty Rogers Baird, Centre; District 4, Marcia L. Saneholtz, Washington State; District 5, Lynn Imergoot, Washington (Missouri); District 6, Phyllis Ocker, Michigan; and District 7, Barbara Hibner, Nebraska.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 27 are: longest run from scrimmage, 76 yards, Tavian Banks, Iowa vs. Illinois; longest pass play, 80 yards, Chad Hutchinson to Damon Dunn, Stanford vs. Oregon; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 53 yards on three punts, Jeff Banks, Washington State vs. Boise State; longest punt return, 82 yards, R. W. McQuarters, Oklahoma State vs. Northeast Louisiana; longest kickoff return, 99 yards, Ben Kelly, Colorado vs. Wyoming; and longest field goal, 57 yards, Rian Lindell, Washington State vs. Boise State. AT&T contributes $400 in each of the six categories each week to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.


Deaths

Frank D'Agostino, an all-American football tackle at Auburn in 1955, died September 28 in Tampa, Florida. He was 61. D'Agostino was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played for the Eagles in 1956 and the New York Jets in 1960. He was an assistant principal at Bill Duncan Opportunity Center, an alternative school in Tampa, at the time of his death.

Terrence Harvey, a sophomore football defensive back at Brigham Young, died September 29 in an automobile accident near Provo, Utah. He was 21.

Lee Hayley, former athletics administrator, died September 20 in Auburn, Alabama. He was 67. Hayley was a member of the Auburn football team from 1949 to 1952 and was an assistant coach there from 1963 to 1964. He served as athletics director from 1972 to 1981. He later coached at North Carolina and McNeese State, and eventually retired as senior associate AD at Georgia.

Anne Delano, a field hockey and lacrosse player and administrator and a former director of physical education at Bryn Mawr, died May 29 in Guilford, Massachusetts. She was 82. Delano was a member of the All-American Hockey Team for five years in the 1940s and the All-American Lacrosse Team for eight years. She was a lacrosse and field hockey coach at summer camps and was an honorary member of the U.S. Field Hockey Association, which she served as vice-president and president, and the U.S. Women's Lacrosse Association. Her publications included "Field Hockey" and "Lacrosse for Girls and Women."
