DIVISION I TEAM SPORTS

The bracket sizes of NCAA Division I championships are tied to the number of sponsoring institutions. This chart shows how the largest bracket sizes are for men's and women's basketball, the two team sports with the most sponsoring institutions (100 percent and 98 percent of the Division I membership, respectively). Women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's volleyball and men's water polo are National Collegiate championships; in those cases, the sponsorship percentage is based on the total membership of all the appropriate divisions.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Annual award presentation scheduled for October 19
The 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced October 19 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri.

The winner will be chosen from among 10 finalists who were announced in September.

In conjunction with that ceremony, the NCAA will host Women in Sports Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. October 18 at the NCAA Hall of Champions in Overland Park, Kansas. The event, which will advise Kansas City-area girls ages 12 to 18 how to get the most out of their sports experience, will feature the 10 Woman of the Year finalists and several state winners; Dru Ann Hancock, assistant commissioner of the Big Twelve Conference; and Tanya Hughes Jones, 1994 Woman of the Year, among others.

TITLE IX

1998 seminar to be conducted May 12-13 in Chicago

The Association will host a full two-day Title IX seminar May 12-13, 1998, at the downtown Westin Hotel in Chicago.

Previously, the NCAA has conducted a pair of seminars at different times to encourage attendance from different parts of the country.

Janet M. Justus, director of education outreach, said that having one site should aid the presenters in focusing energy and resources. It will include more breakout sessions than past seminars and also will feature last year's popular menu format. Justus said she expects attendance of about 300 for the event, the purpose of which is to assist the membership in complying with Title IX.

Registration materials and the agenda will be sent out in February.

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Baseball, softball surveys mailed to Division I members

A survey to determine the membership's interest in changing dates for the Division I baseball and softball championships has been mailed to the Division I membership.

The action is related to 1997 Convention Proposal No. 129, which called for a study of moving the dates of both championships later by about three weeks.

The survey contains questions about when institutions began their 1997 season, how many baseball and softball contests were postponed or canceled in 1997, the number of games that were played under less-than-ideal conditions, and the cost of any spring trip that contained six or more games. The survey also features questions about finances and how the change might impact student-athletes.

The return deadline is November 1.

PROJECT 2000

Formative work underway on headquarters relocation

A number of discussions are taking place that will determine the appearance of the new NCAA headquarters facility and the manner in which it will be used.

The NCAA announced in May that it will be moving to a site on the west side of downtown Indianapolis. Depending on how long construction takes, the NCAA will occupy the new facility in either August 1999 or the spring of 2000. An architectural firm will be selected soon, and the first renderings of the new facility could be provided before the end of the year.

Five project teams have been formed in the national office to address issues relating to the move. "Mirror" project teams also are being formed in Indianapolis to facilitate the process.

The project teams involve communications, office facilities, the Hall of Champions, human resources and technology. As more substantial information about the move becomes available, it will be posted for the membership on the NCAA Online site on the World Wide Web (www.ncaa.org).
