Big birthday for MIAA football

An exhibit honoring 100 years of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) football is on display at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana.

The MIAA -- the nation's oldest collegiate conference -- will crown its 100th football champion this fall.

"We are honored to be included in the College Football Hall of Fame during this significant year in the history of our league," said Commissioner Sheila Wallace-Kovalchik.

The display includes historic photos and memorabilia, along with the new conference logo and pennants from the MIAA colleges that sponsor football. The display will remain through the college football season.

Founded in 1888, the MIAA crowned its first football champion in 1894. There have been league campaigns every season since then except for four war years.

Football-playing members of the MIAA are Adrian, Albion, Alma, Hope, Kalamazoo and Olivet Colleges.

Ahead of the times

There are now two women's professional basketball leagues, Sports Illustrated magazine has a special edition for women, and Conde Nast is about to follow suit.

But where were all of those enterprises 25 years ago when the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics was publishing its first women's edition of the National Directory of College Athletics?

That directory was a pioneer publication that sought to fill the near void of information on women's athletics programs. Improvements came in 1991 when Collegiate Directories purchased publishing rights to the men's and women's books.

"Since taking over the publishing duties, we have put a lot of effort into raising the women's directory to the level of excellence that our men's directory enjoys," editor Kevin Cleary said. "We have made the book much larger and more comprehensive, adding well over 100 pages of information, and we give it the same type of spiral binding.

"It should be noted that the circulation of the women's directory is growing at a faster rate than the men's."

Cleary noted that the Silver Anniversary women's edition includes the article "25 Significant People and Events in Collegiate Women's Athletics Over the Last 25 Years."

Not surprisingly, Title IX was voted most significant.

By the way, Collegiate Directories has a new World Wide Web site: www.collegiatedirectories.com. Among other things, the site offers advice for parents of high-school recruits, updates for the 1997-98 directory and a searchable database of college sports nicknames.

Navy's lethal weapon

Running back Chris McCoy of the U.S. Naval Academy tied an NCAA record when he scored touchdowns on three consecutive rushes in the Midshipmen's September 13 victory against Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick.

McCoy scored on runs of two, nine and two yards in the first quarter against Rutgers. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Tiki Barber of the University of Virginia, who did it last year on runs of 16, 26 and 12 yards against the University of Texas at Austin.

McCoy now has two NCAA records. He also has the most yards rushing by a player in the first game of his career with 273 against Southern Methodist University in 1995.

Sports sponsorship

Colgate University will elevate its men's and women's club crew teams to varsity status beginning in the 2000-01 academic year. Additional university support for the teams will be phased in over the next three years until the teams are officially elevated to varsity status in 2000. Colgate men and women have rowed as club teams at the university for 23 years. The move will give the university 25 men's and women's varsity teams -- 13 for women and 12 for men.
