Connecticut hires Sanford for rowing coach

Jennifer Sanford, novice women's coach at Pennsylvania, has been hired as head women's crew coach at Connecticut.

Sanford will direct the team as it becomes the 23rd varsity sport at Connecticut during the 1997-98 academic year.

Sanford, a 1993 Syracuse graduate, has been associated with rowing all of her life. Her father, Bill Sanford, has been head coach of men's crew at Syracuse for 31 years and her older sister, Kris, is head women's crew coach at Syracuse.

Jennifer Sanford was a four-year member of the Syracuse men's crew team, serving as the squad's coxswain. After graduation, she coached at the high-school level for three years before joining the Pennsylvania staff in August 1996.

During the summer of 1996, Sanford coached the East Coast development team of the women's U.S. National Team and at the East and West Coast camp for the U.S. Junior National Program this summer.

He joined the Central staff in 1994 after serving as AD at Aurora ... Ted Kissell, director of athletics at Dayton, promoted to vice-president and director of athletics. Kissell has been AD for the past five years.

Football--Steve Spurrier, head coach at Florida, given a six-year contract extension ... Tyrone Willingham given a new contract through 2001 at Stanford.

Men's golf--Jim Ragan named head coach at Vanderbilt and Mason Rudolph appointed director of golf.

Men's golf assistant--Jamie Green hired as assistant men's golf coach at Auburn. Green doubled as Dartmouth's assistant men's golf coach and Tulane's assistant women's coach.

Women's golf--Christy Adams appointed head women's golf coach at Wichita State. She is an assistant golf professional at the University of Oklahoma Golf Course ... Jacque Sharber selected as head women's coach at Ohio Northern. This is the first head coaching job for Sharber.

Women's golf assistant--Matt Holtsberry named associate women's golf coach at Ohio Northern. Holtsberry is the PGA professional at Colonial Golfers Club, Ohio Northern's home course. He has been club pro since 1971.

Women's gymnastics--Angela Varney hired at Bridgeport.

Women's gymnastics assistant--Margaret Ulett appointed assistant coach at Bridgeport.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Jeff Bowen hired as assistant coach at North Dakota. Bowen spent the 1997 season as an assistant coach and marketing manager for the Fargo-Moorhead Ice Sharks of the U.S. Hockey League

Men's lacrosse--Jeff Monteroso appointed head men's lacrosse coach at Marietta, succeeding Nick Hamner, who was 0-11 in one season with the Pioneers. Monteroso, defensive coordinator for the football team, has been assistant lacrosse coach for the past two seasons.

Men's lacrosse assistants--Doug Knight hired as assistant men's coach at Virginia. Knight is a 1997 graduate of Virginia, where he lettered four times in lacrosse ... David Cornell appointed assistant coach at Gettysburg ... Bill Dirrigl promoted to associate head coach at Loyola (Maryland). He has been an assistant coach for six seasons ... Jeff Tambroni named assistant coach at Cornell. Tambroni has been an assistant coach at Loyola (Maryland) since September 1996 ... Mike Murphy hired as assistant coach at Pfeiffer. He was an assistant coach at Merrimack ... Tyler Hardy named assistant coach at Duke.

Women's lacrosse--Ginny Martino selected as head women's lacrosse coach at West Chester, succeeding longtime head coach Kathy Krannebitter, who resigned to concentrate full-time on her duties as head field hockey coach. Martino has been assistant coach at West Chester for the past four years.

Women's lacrosse assistants--Kristen Stuckel named assistant women's lacrosse and field hockey coach at Gettysburg ... Julie Mazer named assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at William Smith. Mazer was an assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Swarthmore last season.

Men's and women's rowing assistants--David LeFebvre elevated to assistant coach of men's crew at Boston U. He worked with the program on an interim basis during the past year ... Jane Hall and Yong-In "Jeff" Lee hired as assistant coaches at Washington (Maryland). Hall is a 1997 graduate of Southern California, where she was captain of the rowing team, and Lee is a 1997 graduate of Washington (Maryland), where he was captain of the crew team ... Ashlee Patten named assistant rowing coach at Virginia and Erich Shuler appointed novice crew coach.

Men's soccer--Lin Outten hired as head men's soccer coach at Washington (Maryland), where he also will be head women's softball coach. He has been an assistant soccer coach at Old Dominion since 1990 and was named interim head coach there in January.

Communications assistant--Brian Davis named graduate assistant for communications at Syracuse.

Compliance assistant--Jennifer Lisle named compliance assistant at Texas Tech. She was compliance education/monitoring coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Marketing and promotions directors--Byron Waters promoted to director of marketing and special projects at Texas Tech. He joined the Texas Tech staff in 1990 as manager of the athletics dining hall ... Rob Olin selected as director of marketing and promotions at Georgia Tech. Olin is a veteran of more than 15 years in radio marketing and sales in Atlanta ... Steve Witten, director of athletics marketing and promotions at Georgia Southern since 1995, resigned to accept a similar position with the Auburn Sports Network.

Promotions assistants--Kristi Bennett appointed promotions coordinator at Texas Tech ... Martin Salamone named assistant sports marketing and promotions director at Penn State. Salamone has been sports marketing and promotions intern at Penn State for the past two years.

Sports information director--Benny Benton named sports information director at Mount Olive. Benton most recently was editor of Speed, a monthly auto-racing magazine.

Sports information assistants--Kirsten Clark appointed sports information intern at Springfield. She was a publications assistant at the Eastern College Athletic Conference ... Cathy Bongiovi named assistant SID at Penn State. She was assistant director of communications at the Atlantic 10 Conference for the past two years ... Jamie Carrig hired as assistant SID at Barry. He was director of media and public relations for Miami Dade Community College-Kendall for 10 years.

Sports medicine coordinator--Nicole Piette appointed interim coordinator of sports medicine at Bryant. Piette has been assistant athletic trainer at the college for the past two years.

Strength and conditioning coach--Andy Williams named strength and conditioning coach at Missouri-Kansas City. He was a volunteer strength coach for the Kansas City Royals during spring training this year and an intern with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1996 and 1997.

Strength and conditioning assistants--Jennifer Neziol and Scott McDonald hired as assistant strength coaches at Georgia Tech. McDonald was an assistant strength coach at Florida State for three years and Neziol at Virginia Tech for three years.

Athletic trainer--Donna Stockman hired at Bridgeport.

Athletic training assistants--Matt Lushko appointed assistant athletic trainer at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Carla Gilson named assistant trainer at Georgia Tech ... Leslie Broucker hired as assistant trainer at Ohio.

Video coordinator--Doug Geiser hired as video coordinator for the Akron athletics department. He also is tight ends coach for the football team.

CONFERENCES

Cathy Bongiovi, assistant director of communications at the Atlantic 10 Conference for the past two years, resigned to become assistant sports information director at Penn State.

Bill Smith named associate executive director for compliance and championships at the Patriot League, succeeding Tim Parker, who became assistant athletics director at Virginia Tech. Smith has been director of compliance and student-athlete advisor at Wagner for the past two years.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

The Pacific West Conference announced it will be joined by four schools from the Pacific Northwest Athletic Conference and two independents, expanding its membership to 13 Division II schools effective with the 1998-99 athletics seasons. Joining the conference are Central Washington, Lewis-Clark State, St. Martin's and Western Washington from the PNAC and Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.

SEMINARS

Texas Woman's University again will host the Mizuno High School Coaches Clinic featuring presentations by top collegiate softball coaches from Divisions I, II and III. It is the 10th year for the clinic, organized by Texas Woman's University head softball coach Dianne Baker. The 1998 event will be January 9-10 in Pioneer Hall on the university's campus. Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 6 are: longest run from scrimmage, 85 yards, LeAndre Moore, Ball State vs. James Madison; longest pass play, 90 yards, Chad Pennington to Randy Moss, Marshall vs. Army; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 54 on four punts, Aron Langley, Wyoming vs. Iowa State; longest punt return, 84 yards, Quinton Spotwood, Syracuse vs. Oklahoma; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Nate Terry, West Virginia vs. East Carolina; and longest field goal, 54 yards, Phil Dawson, Texas vs. Rutgers. AT&T contributes $400 each week in each of the six categories for the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.


Deaths

Jack Adkisson, who was a football lineman for Southern Methodist and the Dallas Texans before turning to professional wrestling, died September 10 in Dallas from a brain tumor. He was 68. Adkisson earned widespread fame under the name Fritz Von Erich during a 35-year wrestling career.

Tony Kirkpatrick, a member of Lawrence's 1997 Midwest Conference championship men's basketball team, died September 9 of a brain aneurysm. The sophomore was 19. Kirkpatrick appeared in eight games last season for the Lawrence basketball team and also was a member of the men's golf team, earning team most-valuable-golfer honors for 1997.

Neal Tremble, former director of health, physical education and athletics at Northeastern Illinois and Drake, died August 11 in Estes Park, Colorado. He was 75.
